This article was taken from the North Vernon Sun, 10 Dec 1996 (North Vernon, Indiana)Subject: 100 years ago (Banner Plain Dealer, December 7, 1896 (From the Rushville American: a friend informs me that there is now living on his farm near San Jacinto, George Smith, colored, who was born in Henry Co, Ky December 12th 1815, as the property of Gabriel May. At the age of 18 years, he was sold to Thomas Smith, whom he served 10 years, and later he was bought for $1000 by Jessee Corrico, who owned him for 25 years. Upon obtaining his freedom in 1865. Mr Smith removed to Jennings County where he married and has lived ever since. He is the father of 28 living children, 16 sons and 12 daughters, four sons and three daughters are teachers and two sons are in the U.S. Army. Mr Smith is in his 70th year, in good health, works on his farm every day and is a good neighbor and afaithful man.) He must have bought many children with him from Kentucky. in the 1870 census, there is sons named Wheeler, George, and Stephen, daughters there were Martha, Alice and Nancy, all born during Slavery, and listed as being borned in Kentucky
