We just had a small family reunion in Castlewood park in Lexington Ky. Est 150 people.
Heirs of Addie Crooks Grinney, Grant Crooks, Tom Crooks. Uncle Arthur (Blue) Crooks and his wife Lucille did not have children. Uncle Robert and his wife did not have children. I never knew uncle Albert, aunt Christine, or Aunt Goldine. Don't know the other children's names.
We also pulled in family from Mom from the Ransom side. Mom

Mr Smith removed to Jennings County where he married and has lived ever since.
Moore Slaves in Mercer County

I post this info so that these people will not be lost forever! Thomas Harberson Moore (1797-1869) inherited huge amounts of land on Shawnee Run in Mercer County, Kentucky. The 1860 Slave Schedule indicates T H Moore of Mercer County, KY had 15 slaves and two slave houses. There are memories about some of these slaves in a vanity press book by Gladys Harper whose title is: History of the Moore Family. It was published about 1946. The descendents of Thomas Harbeson Moore have contributed some letters, and mention a married couple, Aunt Judy and Uncle Mack. From the book, written by Dora Moore McFatridge, April 1946, Age 85:

"Grandpa was good to his colored family. They had nice warm, comfortable cabins. The same kind of eats was furnished their table that the whites ate. I often went to Aunt Judy's cabin. She was Grandma's cook--a dear old soul. Her cabin was spotlessly clean. Many were the times I would go to sleep and she tucked me away in her bed. Uncle Mack, her husband, would come in, and I have heard him say (when I began to wake up), "Judy, who's that you got in my bed?" ... "Little white angel," she would say. Then he'd lift me out, and what a romp we would have. I loved both of them. They were never black to me. Aunt Judy always kept pretty red apples, pop-corn, hickory nuts and home-made sugar in her cabin. She always set a little table and all these good things to eat when we went to see her. How could I ever forget such memories."

Dora Moore McFatridge continues on to mention that Aunt Judy had a son, Uncle Henry, who had a son named Tom. The book says:

"Uncle Henry was one of Cousin Ann Rayhill's and my father's playmates--one of Aunt Judy's children. He died not so long ago at the home of his son, Tom, in Louisville. I went to his funeral--he wanted to be laid away at home in Harrodsburg. He looked so peaceful, a smile on his face, hair white."

Since this was written April 1946, my guess is that this "Uncle Henry" died in the 1940s. There was no mention of a surname.

Also mentioned in this book is Ex McAfee and I have posted a separate entry for him under the African-American-Kentucky Message Board.

The USF Africana Heritage Project: Kentucky

Hello,
My name is Toni Carrier. I am the founding director of the University of South Florida Africana Heritage Project. Our mission is to rediscover precious records documenting former slaves and to make those records available on a free, public access internet site. Our researchers travel far and wide to transcribe records from archives, libraries and county records, before these are lost to history.
Our largest focus, however, is within the genealogical community. We recognize that the majority of the records that mention slaves have actually been discovered by folks researching their own ancestry. So many folks have these records, and wish to share them, and that is where our Africana Heritage Project comes in. Our goal is to be a central home on the internet for any and all records that document slaves.
Our website, which will be hosted by Rootsweb (God Love ‘Em), is now under construction, and we are accepting submissions from the genealogical community. We cherish our contributors. Please let us hear from you at toniheadr@aol.com. God Bless!
I am looking for information on Lydia/Lyddie Washington & George W., or John, Mack of Mason Co., KY. In the 1870 census Lyddie Washington & children Charles Washington, Addie Washington, Richard Washington & George Washington are located in the home of a McMillan family. In this census they are listed as white. In the 1880 census, this family is still living in Dover, Mason Co., KY. Lydia has married a Henry Burrell and all children are listed as Burrell. Lydia's children are listed as Mulatto. According to the death certificate of son Richard, his fathers name was George W. Mack. Per Robert's dc his father was John Mack. All children went by the Mack surname in later census.

Any help would be appreciated.
It's my understanding that the slaves took on the last of their slave masters. How do I find a list of slaves and slave owners? It's been so long since I originally researched it and now am stumped as to what avenue I should start looking.

Any slaves from RISK family?

Hi all,

I'm looking for information related to the RISK family of Woodford County. My ancestor Sarah RISK was probably born around 1844 in Midway, Woodford County, to a slave named Bettie MOSS and a slave owner named RISK who may have been a doctor.

Sarah married Robert DARNEAL and had five children: Albert, Kevin, Lizzie, Luela and Hettie DARNEAL (who was born 1864 in Midway, and died 1958 in Lexington).

I have what looks like a daguerreotype (photo) and a sketch of her from that photo. Other than the above information, that's it.

Maybe you know of a family Bible or family records that might match up to this information? The phonebook lists a lot of people with the name Risk in Midway, so I'm guessing they were a fairly prominent family.

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

~Lisa MB

There is an Alexander or Alex Galaspie on the 1870 Fleming County census in the Elizaville District. He was a 63 year old black man living with his wife, Margaret, age 55, and 4 year old Fanny. I was thinking that they were possibly formerly enslaved and were now living near their former owners since the war. Does anyone have any knowledge of this family or their descendants?

Living next to them was the Jacob Adams family and a lady named Mary Biddle. Also nearby were Sousleys, Rices, Hysongs, John Terhune, George Mitchell, Daniel Peck and some of the Kirk families.

Union County - Slaves freed by Civil War?

I have a question that I hope someone out there can answer for me.

In doing research, I've come across an estate settlement for a ROBERT BRADFORD that mentions the "hiring out" of his slaves after his death. As you can imagine, only first or "Christian" names are mentioned.

I suspect that these slaves were emancipated only after the Civil War, if I understand how things worked (with Kentucky being a "loyal" Union/border state, and the way the amendments were worded).

My question is: would there be records (Freedman's Bureau or whatever) that might shed light on what happened to these folks? What surnames they may have taken or were given, where they went, etc.?

Anyone with advice as to how to track some of these folks down?

Feel free to contact me directly at thomp@email.uky.edu or I'll check back here.

Thanks.

Although I'm not sure of the county, I'm looking for any records of slaves that belonged to the Fitzhue family originally from Kentucky but moved to Missouri around the 1850s. I'm only picking up my Fitzhue relatives in Kansas in the 1870 census. If I knew the owners names maybe I could check the slave schedules, etc.

Thank you
Anita

I believe that my ancestor, whom we know as Lamoneha was a slave on the Cave Johnson Plantation and probably about 1793. She had a daughter, Almeda who was also on the plantation. I am curious as to how slaves got to KY, did plantation owners have a certain area where they went to buy slaves?
I would appreciate being guided to any helpful paths.
thanks
Gayle Lewis
gaylelewis@zianet.com

African-American Marriage Laws/Regulations/Customs

Hi,

I am transcribing and index of African-American marriage records for a county in Kentucky and was wondering if anyone knew of a site that might detail laws regarding the marriages of slaves before and after emancipation as well as during segregation with regards to Kentucky marriages.

One question I have in particular is what brought about the end of segregating marriage records? The county I am researching maintained a separate index from 1866 thru 1947 (The index also includes marriages of free blacks from before the Civil War). The African-American records had their own numbering system, 1 thru 1715, and separate marriage record books were maintained until 1941. Then at the end of 1941 the court clerks started numbering the African-American records using the same system as for the larger population. But they also indexed those records after 1941 in both the African-American index and in the general population index. In 1947 the indexing African-American marriages in a separate index completely stopped, but that was also the year that the marriage index for the general population stopped as well, and a new index was started which indexed all without regard to race.

Can anyone tell me why 1941 or 1947 might be important dates with regard to indexing and recording African-American marriages. Did some laws change in those years, or might it just have been a local condition that brought about the change in indexing and record-keeping.

Thanks for any input that you might be able to offer,

Philip Naff
Indianapolis, Indiana
Martha LAIR, Lincoln County b.app 1872

I have been researching the HALE family from Lincoln County, KY. My great grandmother is Martha Durham and she was identified in the 1910 census as Mulatto. She was living with her grandmother, Martha Lair, also identified as Mulatto.
I am struggling to find anymore information. I don't know if Lair is her maiden name or married name. I cannot find marriage records or any other information. However, in the 1850 slave schedule, Elizabeth Lair reported 5 slaves. I am assuming this is a possible connection since there were no more Lair's in Lincoln county.
If anyone has information about the Lair family, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone has information about the Durham's and/or Hale's, I need all the help I can get.
My great grandmother (Martha Durham) died when she was just 20 yrs. old so I unfortunatly do not have access to any further information. My grandfather, Harold Hale, ran away from Lincoln county when he was a teenager, so I have no family connections in Lincoln county. Finally, records indicate Martha Durham had one more son before her death, Dellie Hale Jr. b. 1929, I can't find any other information either.

Samuels/Wiseheart Slaves in Nelson County

Greetings~

I am searching for information about my 3rd great grandfather, Alford/Alfred Samuels and the folks that owned him.

His CW military record provided me with the name of his last slave owner, Mary SAMUELS. I've no information regarding Mary other than at the time that Alford enlisted, she had claimed to be the rightful owner of him and had gained ownership of him through inheritence. This information was found on her Claim for Compensation in which she also declared that she had been loyal to the Union. Attesting to her loyalty were Alexander SAYERS and John H. WISEHEART.

A fellow researcher sent me copies of pages from Patricia Craven's book that lists the names of slaves from Nelson County, KY with their owners. The information came from wills. Amongst the names was a John Wiseheart who had owned a slave by the name of Alford. It seems like a strong possiblity that prior to being owned by Mary, Alford was owned by John Wiseheart.

I have the will book numbers and would love to be able to receive the wills for John Wiseheart, Benjamin Wiseheart and Ann C. Wiseheart (for whom, John H. Wiseheart was the administrator of the estate).

I would also love to connect with anyone else working on learning more about these families.

TIA

HAMILTON SMITH Slave Sale/Manumission @ Dec. 1851

I'm posting this query because I'm hoping that someone might have run across some info about the possible sale or manumission by HAMILTON SMITH of @10 slaves sometime just before Dec. 1851. Smith was an attorney living in District 2 (just on the outskirts of Louisville, I believe) in Jefferson Co., KY. In the 1850 Slave Schedule, Smith had 10 slaves ranging from the age of 10 to 50; about half men and half women. I know that by Dec. 1851, Smith had moved to Indiana. I presume that Smith sold or manumitted his slaves before the move because in August 1851, Indiana passed a constitutional amendment excluding blacks from entering the State. Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

ISO Slave Manumissions and/or Sales in Jefferson, Springfield and Washington Co., KY

Can anyone give me some advice on how to track down slave sales and/or manumissions in: 1. Louisville &/or Jefferson Co., KY; & 2. Springfield &/or Washington Co., KY. I'm not certain when these would have taken place so I'm looking at a time period running from @1834 to 1852. The manumissions may not have necessarily taken place in connection with a death.

I'm new to this so the basic information would be extremely helpful to me. Thanks very much.

I'm looking for any information on Mamie Williams and her daughter Grace Ernestine ? Grace Ernestine is my grandmother. Mamie Williams was born on 1854 in the Kenton County, Kentucky Area. It is believed that Mamie had been married quite a few times. Grace was born 1891 in Cincinatti, Ohio. I found a Mamie Williams (B) black, on the 1880 census of Hamilton County,Ohio, age 26 living with a Dora Jackson (B) black. Later on, I found a Mamie Williams married to a Sidney Hoesman in 1883, of the same county. I am looking for any compairison between these women, because I'm trying to find out who the father of my grandmother is. Other surnames associated with Mamie Williams are: Anderson, Bobo, Johnson, and Toumey. If any of what I have just written means anything to anyone please contact me.

I am searching for information on my ancestors who may have been slaves owned by Thomas Harrison in Kentucky. According to the information I have thus far, Thomas Harrison purchased slaves in April of 1857 at Logan County Court house in Russellville. The slaves were purchased from John F Todd or N Beauchamp. My great-grandfather born around 1840 - 1845 may have been on of these slaves. If anyone has any information or records of Thomas Harrison's slaves please contact me .

In any event his son, my GG Grandfather was then adopted by the Kemper family.
Has anyone ever heard about this?
Thanks Diane Kemper Bixler

New Quick Browse Function at Africana Heritage

Hi Everyone,

It's Toni at Africana Heritage. Just wanted to let you know that we have added a great new function to the website called Quick Browse, where you can view any or all of our more than 900 documents with one quick click! Tips:

1. To view all 900 of our records, just click on "ANY" under document type, and do not enter any keywords. Voila! 900!

2. To view all documents that contain your keyword, select "ANY" for document types, and then enter your keyword(s).

3. To view specific document types, choose which type(s) you would like to view. You can enter keywords with that, too.

We are very excited about this new feature that makes it much easier to put records in your hands. Happy Hunting!

Toni
www.africanaheritage.com

toni@africanaheritage.com
For anyone interested, I have a series of Civil War letters written by my great uncle, Samuel Henry SHERLOCK. In a letter dated August 19,1861 and mailed from the village of Garrett in Meade County, Kentucky, SHERLOCK describes the capture of a slave named "Jim" who ran away from his owner, a man named CARRICO. I will share this letter upon request.

Although I do not have possession of the Brannon Family Bible, I have copied the following entries from it:

"Negro girl Nance born August 1845"
"Negro boy Lewis born February 1848"
"Negro boy Peter born August 1853"

They most likely were born on the William Brannon farm in Marion County, Kentucky. I believe they carried the last name of Brannon because there is a more recent Afro American Brannon buried in Marion County, Ky. I hope this will help someone further their research.

Please note that my e-mail address is: caroljim3@mchsi.com

Carol
