I am looking for Sanders who lived in these areas 1800 to 1900. I have been told that Henry, Tennes, Mary, Lewis, and Frank Sanders were siblings. However I can only find two of these individuals but no relations. I found a Mary Sanders born about 1857 in Humphreys and a Lewis Sanders born about 1859 in Hickman County.

Henry Sanders was the father of Eddie, Becky, Murphy and Hattie; Tennes (think married to Frank) was the mother of Ida; Mary was the mother of Richard, Grady, Thomas, and Bessie; Lewis was the father of Dalton, Vicie/Vickie, and Henry; and Frank was the father of Merva.

I am wondering if anyone has come across any information on any of them. Thank you in advance for your reply.

My mother-in-law's ancestors are said to have originated in Overton Co. Tennessee. Somewhere along the line the name Alley turned into Gardenhire.

Mike Gardenhire was born in 1792 (VA) and died in 1889 (KS). He is buried in Newberry(Alma), Wabaunsee, Kansas cemetery under the name of Mike Alley, which it is said is the original family name. We haven't determined how that name changed or when it took place.
He had a son Lebanon who was a Civil War Vet.

I would like to find out when, where and by whom the name change took place.
If there were slave owner issues involved.
If the name did originate in Tennessee or not.

Thank you for any help!

Joyce Rhodeman
Hi I am having a lot of trouble locating my ancestor. His name was James Barbee and he was born about 1830 in TN. Both his parents were also born in TN. I am only able to locate him on the 1880 census in Alexander county Cairo, IL. He is listed as Mulatto and he had two children Glendora and Frank. Both born in IL. In 1880 he was widowed. He was also a farmer. I havnt been able to locate him on slave rolls or figure out who his parents were. Were they slave owners or what? I dont even really see any Barbee familis in TN that were but maybe thats the search. If anyone has any info on Barbee slave owners, or any info that would be helpful I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Nadia

Sanders in the area of Union City, Tennessee

I've been trying to locate information on Mary Sanders who was born around 1862 in Tennessee. At least three of her children included Grady, Richard, and Lelah (all three born in Union City or around that area). She had one or two more children who the family lost track of.

I am also trying to track information on her son, Richard Sanders.

I have more information on the slaveowners and would like to get some probate, bill of sale,or any other documentation that would substantiate an approximate arrival. The owners were from VA and NC. I will be in Lauderdale in a couple of months,so any suggestions as to where to go or advice would be appreciated. I have located alot of family members, but there are afew gaps that I am trying to fill.

Originally from Haywood County, then to Crockett, then to Lauderdale and Some went to Maury City or Lake County. My Grandfather Esex Noel(1835), wife named Malinda?Noel(1840)
children: Caroline(1857),Sally(1859),John(1862),Eadie(1865),Malinda(1867),Bill(1869),Puss?(1870),Pink(1874),Louisa(1879),Sam(1881). Esex father may have been named Sam(1800),wife Roda(1806). Esex may have had a sister Eliza(1830) who had children Henry(1863),Randle(1865),Louiza,(1869). Randles kids I think went to Maury City or Lake County, all eventually moved out of state. (OH). Can't find death records on the grand parents(Esex/Malinda),just my immediate grandfather Pink, the siblings of Pink just kind of dispersed. My grandfather(Pink) married Neely Cole(1880) from Crockett, I can't seem to locate any of her info. The Noels were orginally owned by a prominent Noel, whose daughter was married to Henry Moody, It seems after his passing they were left to his daugher/son inlaw. None of my Noel relatives know much, the last child of Pink can't remember much. I have pieced this all together.

My gg grandfather Meredith CAVIN born abt 1848 in either Franklin or Lincoln Co, TN was believed to be the son of a slave and a white man named CAVIN. How would I go about trying to find his mother or father? Meredith was "orphaned" in 1855 and went to live with the Conner H Bean famiy in Franklin Co. Family stories have him living with the slaves but on the 1860 census he shows as son of Conner and listed as white. Any help would be appreciated Thanks

Chris Cavin Golleher

Wilson and Eliza Cowan/Cowen, TN>OH/1843

I am researching my paternal great-grandmother's family. Here's what I know so far:

Wilson and Eliza Cowan/Cowen moved to Union Township, Brown County, OH, about 1843. Their children were: Franklin, Julia, Amanda, Elizabeth, Eliza, Sarah Belle and James. By 1860, Eliza has died (I assume) and Wilson has married Mihaly Highwarden. I believe they had a daughter Mary and two other children who died after 1860. A Brown Co., OH death record says Wilson's father was born in TN and his mother was born in GA. Eliza's parents were born in TN.

By the 1870 Census, four of Wilson and Eliza's children are missing from the household and Brown Co.: Julia, Franklin, Amanda and Mary. Mary would've been 10 years old. I don't have married names for the women so I don't know if they stayed in Brown Co. Mary may have been working and living in another household in Brown Co. I can't find Franklin at all.

I want to answer several questions: Where did Wilson and Eliza come from in Tenn.? Who were their families? They were evidently freedmen, so were they born free or otherwise? Then I want to know what happened to their four children. And I'd like to know if an Annie Tally, who had a Freedmen's Bank account in Memphis from 1871-1873 was their daughter. She named her parents as Wilson and Eliza Cowen (dead). This is correct info. I have not found her living with them in OH at all (1850, 1860, 1870 Censuses) so if she's their daughter I need to confirm it elsewhere.

I found some Cowan records posted on the Franklin Co. African American Griots Web site, but Wilson and Eliza weren't mentioned in the wills. How can I research African American Cowens in Tenn.?
Thanks for all help.
Ed Johnson of Chattanooga, Tennessee ~ Lynched in 1906

On January 23, 1906 a rape was committed on a white woman in Chattanooga, Tennessee. A few days later the local police arrested a black man, one Ed Johnson for the crime. He was kept in custody for the next few weeks away from Chattanooga for the fear of being lynched. From the time he was arrested to the day Johnson went on trial, there were two organized attempts made to lynch him. Both attempts failed because the prisoner could not be located. (more on website)

I am not related to this family, I'm just passing on this information that I found while doing research on Lynchings.

I am researching the Rickman genealogy. I am looking for the parents and siblings of German Alfred Rickman. I have nothing that refers to a father. His mother may have been Margaret Rickman from Virginia who died in Indiana with German ALfred Rickman. His possible siblings were William C. Rickman, Thomas Rickman, and Levi Rickman. They were born in or around Nashville, Tennessee. German was born around 1822. He married three times 1) Louiza (Lavisa) Bugart (Bogart), 2) Elizabeth Scott, and 3) Nancy Emmaline Scott. He died in Dresden, Ontario, Canada on 17 March 1901 at the age of 79. Some Rickman cousins of German Alfred Rickman moved from Tennessee to Ohio and Indiana. I am wondering if maybe his father and his siblings did too.

looking for Dancer Family members (from Selmer, TN)

My grandmother was Willie Dee Dancer (she later changed her name to Johnson after her father, then became a Whitsell when she got married). She was born in 1929 and raised in Selmer, TN. Her mother was Vora (or Vola) Dancer and her father was Frank Johnson (of Paducah, KY). She was partially raised by her cousin "Mama" Irie (or Arie) Dancer. She had two aunts (her mother's sisters) by the name of Eunice and Iola Dancer. Her mother Vora (or Vola) was a maid and moved to Texas with a white family that she was working for. To my knowledge, she was never heard from again. I'm looking for any relatives that may be out there. If you have any information, please email me at lionist99@hotmail.com

God bless and best wishes on all of your searches!

-Shawn Whitsell
