Shears Family of Nacogdoches,Texas

I am searching the whereabouts of the above person(s) families who lived in the Nacogdoches area or still do today. Amos Henderson Sr, father and mother were: Janie Henderson (not sure of maiden name) and Joe Henderson from Louisana as listed on the 1910 Census of Nacogdoches, Texas. Both parents had many children living in the areas from 1910 to 1930. From a book in my public library, I came across two Henderson's family members Amos, Sr and Amos, Jr. Both died one year apart. Amos Jr. become a minister in the COGIC and started the Davis COGIC in Nacogdoches, Texas. His father Amos,Sr also started a church in the Forest, Sweet Union Community, Cherokee County, Texas in the 1950. His wife name: Eula Mae Horn. His brother was named C.V. Henderson. He became the first Black County Commissioner for the State of Texas. He and his wife had ten children. The articles of Amos, Sr does not mention his father name or mother name, but it does mention that his father had 76 arces of land in Nacogdoches, Texas. On the Amos Jr side, he had four children: Michael Anthony Henderson, Jacqueline Henderson, Almaire Henderson, Lonwanna Michelle Henderson. They are all connected to Janie Henderson and Joe Henderson and my great-great grandmother Sarah Ann Alexander who was married to William Alexander on March 7, 1897.

From the 1900 Census of Nacogdoches, Texas it shows Janie Roberts or Jane Roberts listed as a stepchild born 1883. I am not sure where she was born, it does state Texas. Also, on my great-great grandmother (Sarah Ann Hancock or Sarah Ann Roberts) not sure of her maiden name (the children are listed as Roberts from the 1910 census.) On the birth certificate of Milton Alexander born on June 2, 1905, it shows Sarah Hancock as the maiden name, but on marriage license of William Alexander and Sarah it states Roberts. Here are the names of the children listed on the 1900 cenus under Alexander and Roberts: Mattie Elizabeth Alexander, Cornelia Alexander, Jennie Alexander, Jane Roberts, Lewis Roberts, Liza Roberts, Annie Roberts, Otto Roberts, Amanda Roberts. I can't locate many of the younger children on the 1910 Census. (Milton Alexander my grandfather listed on the 1920 census with Sarah and her grandchildren living in Dallas, Texas. Also, can't located Milton Alexander on the 1910 Census.) Sarah Ann Alexander died in Dallas, Texas on May 10, 1942. The informant and signer on her death certificate was Maragret Wells a granddaughter. Both Sarah's daugthers and son lived in Dallas, Texas and died in Dallas, Texas. They were: Mattie Elizabeth Porter on 4/5/1976 and Annie Linthecum on 8/16/1967 and Milton Alexander on 11/29/1980 (grandfather) Cornelius Porter was the son Mattie Porter who died on Aug 2, 1988 - Dallas, Texas. His sons are Raymond Earl Porter and Samuel Maurice Porter of Dallas, Texas whose mother is Doris Juanita Harris. Both Cornelius and Juanita were married on 7/30/1943 - Dallas, Texas. Cornelius Porter also married Mattie Mae Davis - 12/30/1955 - Dallas, Texas.

Marvin Milton Alexander is my father (can't locate him on the 1930 Census). His mother and father were Rosa Lee Manor from Austin and Texas Milton Alexander. My father sisters: Doris Leatrice Alexander and Ernestine Gillis from a previous marriage.

If you can help me locate or give me information about the family members from the 1910, 1920, 1930 Cenuses and the living relatives, I would appreicate it so much. Thanks.
Washington Plantation slave names - Travis County, Texas

My great-great grandfather, Thomas Pratt Washington (1806-1873), brought 50 to 60 slaves with him when he moved from Alabama to Texas in 1845. At the close of the Civil War, he owned 106. I've got a listing of over 50 of them by name, with most having the surnames they assumed after freedom. Their wives/husbands/children are noted in some cases, too.

This might be helpful for some and I'd be happy to share the list.

searching for Fannie (Mitchell) Brown

I'm looking for information regarding Fannie (Mitchell) Brown (also known as Frances or Francis). I know that she was born in 1875 in Georgia and died 1946 in Texas, possibly in Smith County (where she is buried). Family history reveals that she was murdered by the boyfriend/husband of a relative, but I've been unable to get a death certificate for Fannie. She and her husband, Pink (1872-1952) are buried in Center Cemetary in Tyler, TX.

Also, if anyone could confirm either the names of Fannie's parents, or of any of her siblings, that would help me tremendously. I have a potential lead on her family in the 1880 Census, but I haven't been able to verify the lead.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I am searching for relatives that may have lived in the nacogdoches, texas and may have moved on to Dallas, Texas 1910. My grandfather was named William Alexander born 1849, Georgia. My great-grandmother was born in Texas July 15, 1861 or 1862. I did find them listed on the 1900 Census living in Nacodgoches, Texas. But I can't find the family members anywere on the 1910 Census. On the 1900 Census it shows my Sallie Alexander and William with 11 children. My great-grandmother had three children by him and the rest by someone else. My grandfather was born 1905 which I can't find him on the 1910 census nor my great-grandfather as deceased as my grand mother stated on her death certificate. It shows Roberts as the children last names, but I am not sure. If you can help me locate them..I would appreciate your service. Thanks.

Hoping to Find Marriage Records of Edd Hughes and Katie Isley

I'm searching for the marriage date of Edd Hughes and Katie Isley.

Ed was born abt. (Apr?) 1877-78, in Harrison Co., Texas.
Katie was born between 1880 and 1887, in Stanford/Stafford, Greene/Yell County, Arkansas.

Katie's family moved to Waco, McLennan County, Texas, where she grew up and met Ed.

According to 1900 Rockwall Co. PCT 3 Census, Ed was a boarder and single.

I have not found any census records of Katie before 1910, Katie married at age 14, she and Ed were living in Terrell, Kaufman Co., Texas when they had their first child in 1902.
According to 1910 Rockwall Co. PCT 3 Census, Ed and Katie had been married for 9 years, and this was Edd's second marriage (M2).

I found Katie's Texas death index, I'm hearing conflicting stories that she was 104 years old when she died, which would push her birth year to 1880 or '81, and put her marriage year in 1894 or '95. The conflict continues as Edd was 10 years older than Katie, which would make her birth in 1887.

Can Somebody Help Me Please?

searching for Tom Calhoun

I'm looking for information on Tom Calhoun of Navarro and/or Ellis counties. Tom was the husband of Laura (Moss) Calhoun. They married in the mid-1880's (possibly 1886), and they had at least 4 children (Phillis, Anna, Harriett, and Arthur). Laura is listed as a widow on the 1900 Census, so Tom passed away sometime between 1892 and 1900.

A potential relative of Tom Calhoun is Sam/Samuel Calhoun, who married the former Josephine Ingram and had several children with her, including Wilbur Calhoun (died in the mid-1990's), a confirmed relative who owned a funeral home and oversaw the burial of several of our relatives. If I can confirm that Tom and Sam are related, I'll be able to move a little further with my research. Any help will be most appreciated.

Sarah Ann Hancock - Sarah Ann Roberts -Sarah Ann Alexander- Nacogdoches, Texass

Thanks.
Africana Heritage Project Seeking Descendants from Drayton Family Plantations

Hi Everyone,

It's Toni Carrier from the USF Africana Heritage Project, writing to report that the Magnolia Plantation Foundation in Charleston, SC, is funding a project for us to conduct research in Drayton family papers, to reconstruct the family lineages of enslaved communities on Drayton family plantations.

This is the first time a former slaveholding family has ever undertaken or funded genealogical research in their family papers. We are profoundly grateful to them, and we would like to hear from descendants. The Drayton family held plantations in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Texas.

You can read about this groundbreaking research at the follwing URL:

http://www.africanaheritage.com/Lowcountry_Africana.asp

If you know or feel that your family has roots on Drayton family plantations, please do contact us. We would like to welcome you to the group and learn about your family's history.

You can contact us at toniheadr@aol.com or info@africanaheritage.com

Best and Peace,
Toni
www.africanaheritage.com
I have been trying to locate more information on my great-grandfather William Alexandder who was born in Georgia 1850. I did see my great-grandfather listed on the 1900 Census married to Sarah Ann Roberts (listed on their marriage license March 1897- Nacogdoches, Texas. born in Texas) After the 1900 census, 1910 Census does not show my grandfather listed with his wife Sarah Ann Alexander living in Dallas, Texas only her daughter Annie Alexander listed on the 1910 census. Also, her younger children not listed either. I did find one of her daughter living in Nacogdoches as Janie Henderson married to Joe Henderson. They had several children. I could not find information on her when she died nor her husband. Janie and Joe are shown on the 1910, 1920, 1930 census. Also, I am having trouble with 1900 census which shows the stepchildren of Sarha Ann Alexander and WM Alexander (william) as Roberts. As I searched the many census looking for the Roberts (especially) the men military records - WWI - nothing came up. If you can help me...please do. Thank you.

Johnson Higgins--great great grandfather.

I am trying to leave some history to my grandchildren regarding this very colorful man; whom believing who is telling the story was the father of 25 children. He lived in a small community in Brazoria County, TX, called "Higgins Settlement". It is believed that he and another Higgins entered from Georgia. In the same community there is another set of Higgins, that are not actually related to us. This is what I have been told, though the relationships were never done that way. To add more mystery to my gg grandfather it is believed that he was half white. He was also a minister. He deeded land to St. Paul Baptist Church in Higgins Settlement to have a cemetary and a church. The cemetary is called St. Paul Cemetary. If anyone is familiar with my family please email me. He was married to Minerva--I do not know what her maiden name was. However they lived in Higgins Settlement until their death.
A little more help--my grandfather was Timothy "Timp" Higgins. He was married to Mary Dennis Higgins. My father is T. H. Higgins, Jr. also of Higgins Settlement.

So far I have been able to
trace the family from Greene County, Illnois to Bastrop
and Red River Countries, Texas from about 1810 through
1889. I have an approximately date on when the family
migrated to Bastrop County, Texas (1834-1835), however
I am having difficulty in locating any records
verifing when they purchased their first enslaved
African (my ggg grandmother) which occurred between 1835-1840. I have looked at the county records (deeds, wills, probate and tax records) in Bastrop County, Texas.

Need assistance on how to proceed.

Trying to get any information on my wife's great grandfather, Riley Sutton. According to family he was born in TX (where is unknown) sometime between 1870 and 1880. He later moved to Alexandria (Rapides Parish), LA. I have located him in the 1910 and 1920 LA census. He is listed as mulatto. According to family, he was probably half African American, half Native American.
There is a possibility that Riley may not have been his first name, although it is the name he used. We have a suspicion he may have come from the general Houston area. Any information on African American Suttons who had a son born in that time frame would be appreciated.
Thank you.
Jesse Washington of Waco, TX. ~ Lynched in 1916

Jesse Washington, with his mother and father, Henry and Martha, and at least one brother, William, possibly about sixteen, had been living and working on the Fryer farm for only five months or so, since the beginning of the year. According to Elisabeth Freeman's account of the lynching, there were also some younger children in the family. Jesse Washington was a large, strong young man, but was illiterate and possibly retarded. When Freeman went to Waco to investigate the lynching for the NAACP, one of Washington's teachers told her that no one had ever been able to teach him to read or write. (more on website)

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information I found while doing research on Lynchings.
I am looking for information on an African American family in the Limestone/Mexia area. I found some small snipets in the 1900/1920/1930 census. I tried back tracking, but I did not seem to find anything earlier. The individuals I am trying to build a tree for are Ephiram (also found it spelled Efron) & Angeline Hall (no idea of her maiden name). Their children listed are: Washingtion, Mabel, & Pricilla and one name I cannot decipher on the 1900 census. If you are familar with them any help is appreciated. Thanks...

Searching for information on Nancy AYRES - maiden name unknown or possibly Luzanne AYRES - maiden name unknown. 1800-1900. Nancy AYRES has been found on the 1870-1880 TX Census. The 1880 TX Census list her as born in MS.

I believe Luzanne was either her mother or mother-in-law, she was listed as being born in GA.

Any help would be appreciated.
