Re: Wetsel, Wetzel, Whetsel, Whetsell, Whetzel, Whitsel Family: Rockingham Co., VA - Seneca Co., OH

I too am a descendant of the Wetzel family; of Frederick, Md. I did my family tree and found that I am a descendant of the Great Lewis Wetzel bloodline. I bought and read the book entitled, "The Life and Times of Lewis Wetzel". My Grandfather John Wetzel had always passed down stories in the family that we are Lewis' cousins. I researched and found that The Wetzel Family was a great part of the Upper German Settlement in Frederick County before they migrated to Wheeling. In the book, Frederick is never mentioned however I found articles from the Frederick News Post verifying that he, (Lewis) along with the Poe brothers, was born in Lewistown,Frederick Co., Md., not Pennsylvania. Martin Wetzel owned farm land in northern Fred. Co. I have the deed map of the property showing the facts. We have our family reunion every year just a few miles north of this area; in Rocky Ridge. My Grandfather always told us we were German and Blackfeet Indian. I am trying to establish that connection. Although Lew Wetzel and his family were indian fighters, they also did some trading with the indians and Lew vowed his vengeance for his father and brother's murders, only on native american men, not the women and children. I tracked some Wetzels' to the Blackfeet reservation and undoubtedely, there are many of them there. I wrote to the Blackfeet Nation requesting information of the origins of the Wetzel surname within their tribe. I have yet to recieve a response.

Mae Eunice (Parks, Woods) Green

Mae Eunice (Parks, Woods) Green was born August 31, 1939, in Deepwater, West Virginia to Clara M. Lee and Oscar Robinson, Jr. At an early age, she was adopted by Haywood L. Parks of London, West Virginia. Mae grew up with two sisters, Ruth and Lucretia.

Mae was an excellent student who enjoyed history, geography and literature. She was a cheerleader and band member in junior/high school and helped to desegregate the West Virginia school system during her senior year.

Mae became interested in healthcare after her sister Ruth was diagnosed with polio at the age of nine.
After graduating from high school, Mae enrolled in the Mid-Ohio (formerly Mansfield, Ohio General Hospital) nursing program when it began to admit African Americans thus becoming a minority Licensed Practical Nurse pioneer.
She graduated as an LPN in September 1965. She worked for 30-plus years at healthcare facilities in Mansfield, Columbus, and Cincinnati, Ohio.
Mae was a consummate nursing professional with outstanding diagnostic and clinical skills.

Mae was a devoted mother to three children, Elizabeth M. Woods of Spartanburg, SC and Robert E. Woods (Ronda) and Eric L. Green (Andrea) all of Indianapolis, Indiana.
As a divorced-parent with no ex-spousal support, Mae often worked 2 or 3 jobs to provide for her family's economic needs. Even so, she always found a way to assist others with their material, emotional and spiritual needs. This generosity of spirit is the legacy that Mae has passed onto her children.

One of the most important events in Mae's life occurred in December 1959, when she learned about the Bahá'í Faith from her dear friend, Josephine O'Dell. Shortly thereafter, Mae embraced the teachings of Baha'u'llah, the Prophet-Founder of the Bahá'í Faith, and served on various committees and administrative institutions throughout Ohio and later in Upstate, South Carolina to where she retired in 1996.

Mae Green passed from this earthly existence on May 18, 2010 after a three year struggle with pulmonary hypertension that resulted in congestive heart and renal failure. She was preceded in death by her father, Haywood Parks; and sister, Ruth Parks-Hornung.

Besides her loving children, she leaves behind to cherish her memory three adored grandchildren, Ashton Monique, Asia Nicole, and Austin Lamont Green all of Indianapolis, IN. Mae will also be sorely missed by her mother, Clara (Parks) Carpenter; sister, Lucretia (Parks) McKinney both of Raleigh, NC; and cousins, Reggie Parks (Dunbar, West VA) and Kaye Parks (London, West VA). Other grieving relatives include nieces, Danielle Parks (Mansfield, OH), Elaine Stiles (Detroit, MI); nephews, David Parks (Mansfield, OH), Jeffrey Parks (Minneapolis, MN), Douglas Parks (Raleigh, NC); and a host of other relatives, including many "adopted" sisters, brothers, daughters, and sons.

Mansfield News Journal
May 22, 2010

Courtesy Post
Excerpts from Yesterday and Today columns, Shirley Donnelly, Post-Herald, Beckley, W.Va., about Napoleon Morris are on the Shoebox page at West Virginia Memories:

http://wva.homestead.com/Shoebox.html

Children mentioned are Lottie Childs, Mary Thompson and Virgie Morris. One article said Mr. Morris had five wives and another said he was married to two sisters who, in turn, had 21 children.

Sadly, history is filled with information that cannot be supported with facts. Believe it's called "revisionism". Hollywood script writers call it "creative license". Politicians call it "spin-doctoring". Richard Nixon said, "I'm not a crook".

Don't let facts spoil a good story! I have found around eight columns that mention Napoleon Morris. I am going to make a collage and post it on the Shoebox page of my site. May take a day or so.

One column says he had five wives. Another, two wives who were sisters.

"It's mama's BABY and daddy's MAYBE!!!" If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is! Census data indicates some of those were possibly stepchildren. In 1870 VA-Amherst-Peddler-Image 4, Napoleon was age 21 with a 14-year old daughter (Nora) and 12-year old son (Henry)? Highly unlikely! They were in 1880 VA-Amherst-Pedlar-District 19-Image 55. In 1900 VA-Amherst-Elon-District10-Image 11, Napoleon and Eliza had been married only four years. Eliza was enumerated as birth-mother to eleven with only five still living. There was only one child (Virginia) age-four or younger. Thank God for the discovery of DNA!!!

Napoleon Morris - Fayetteville WV

I have an article -- A Reason Why Smiths Abound In This Area, Shirley Donnelly, Beckley Post-Herald, W.Va., 25 March 1958, Page 4 -- that briefly mentions Napoleon Morris of Fayetteville, W.Va., who fathered 42 children with five wives. All I could find on Ancestry.com was Mr. Morris in the 1910 census:

Napoleon Morris of Fayetteville, Fayette County, W.Va., 62 in 1910, born about 1848 in Virginia. Parents born in Virginia. Marital Status: Widowed. Race: Black. His children listed in the 1910 census were mulatto: Lucy Morris, 23, a son. (The summary says “Lucy” but the original document looks like “Lacy” to me.) Hayes Morris, 18.. Anna Morris, 16. Virgie Morris, 13. John Morris, 12. Sampson Morris, 9.

The article is on the Smith page of West Virginia Memories. http://wva.homestead.com I’d love to hear from Mr. Morris’s descendants. Either here or through the e-mail address on my site.

Seeking any information about Lee Thomas. He appears in the 1880 census as a blacksmith living on Main street in Weston, West Virginia with his wife Flora (her maiden name may be Lee) and children. They later move to Zanesille, Ohio between 1881-1885.
As late as 1908 the Thomas family is traveling back to West Virginia to visit relatives. In 1920 some of the children are living in Cleveland, Ohio
Thanks for any assistance.
Wetsel, Wetzel, Whetsel, Whetsell, Whetzel, Whitsel Family: Rockingham Co., VA - Seneca Co., OH

I'm researching my family history, which connects to the Whetsel/Whetzel/Wetsel/Wetzel family of Rockingham Co,VA (now West Virginia).

The oldest relative that I have been able to identify is Daniel Whetsel, b. 1780 in VA. His first wife was Jane Townsend.

He migrated with his family to Seneca Co, OH, in the early 1800s, where he appears on the US Census from 1830. I know that he had at least 2 sons, Eli (b. 1814 in VA) and Phelix/Felix (b.1811 in VA).

Phelix was my great-great-great-great grandfather; he died in Seneca County, OH, in 1874.

This family is referred to in the census records as free persons of color. The oral history in my family says that this family was of German and Native American origin. Because they do not appear in any of the Whetsel family history that I have read so far, I am wondering if perhaps this family's members were slaves of one of the Whetsel families in Rockingham Co, VA., and/or somehow related.

Any information that you might be able to provide would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
