San Francisco 1830s - Frank Rodan

Classification: Query
Surnames: Rodan, Rondon, Roden, Rodoun, Rodonda, Randono
My oral family history says that my ancestor came from San Francisco. Frank Rodan arrived in Fiji in 1834 as a crew on board the Tahiti based French brig “L’Aimable Josephine”.

In books (includes diaries and manuscripts) and newspaper articles from the 19th century, I have seen him referred to as ‘Spanish Frank’.

Recently I came across a British government hearing on land claims in Fiji (Fiji became a British colony in 1874). Frank Rodan was called as a witness – next to his name ‘Frank Randono’ in brackets was ‘Spanish Joe’. At the hearing he says he was Mexican.

I don’t have any knowledge of San Francisco or California’s history – from Wikipedia I gather San Francisco was part of Mexico in 1834.

I have come across information that indicates the “L’Aimable Josephine” was in Chile before it arrived in Fiji in 1834.

Where can I find shipping records in 1834 for San Francisco? And are there any other records from that period that I can look up? Any suggestions on archives/libraries to contact.

Spelling variations in written documents in Fiji : Rondon, Roden, Rodoun, Rodonda, Randono.
