I'm descended from Crawford (mother's maiden name). This board is confusing me, as I've seen postings referring to Clan Crawford. I'm trying to find ancestry of Robert H. Crawford, b. abt. 1817, MS, America.

From my searchings, I've only found information that states that Crawford is a Sept of the Clan Lindsay.

I haven't done a lot of research into the European Clans, so can someone out there straighten me out on the whole Clan & Sept thing? What, exactly, is the relationship between the two terms? Some surnames are linked to Clans and others are referred to as Septs; it's very confusing.

Any help will be appreciated.
