Admin Note re Genealogical Posts to the Clan Cumming Board and List

Dear Clan Cumming Posters:

Please bear in mind that the genealogical portion of the Clan Cumming list and board should keep within the time frame of the Clan System being active in Scotland. This would be up through 1745-47 as it was quashed following the Jacobite Wars.

Should you post genealogical queries to the Board and find them "deleted", take a look to the Cumming Surname Board as I likely have moved them to the surname board where they are more appropriate to the topic. [If you have a variant spelling used in your post, they may be moved to a board that share that spelling, if it exists, otherwise they will go to Cumming.]

This is not to say that the Clan Cumming list and board are not for genealogical queries and posts. This is to provide a reminder that they are CLAN specific and not general in time and place. Period circa 1000 through 1747 and Scotland, Ireland, Europe in geographic nature. Think of those under the Clan system and where they would have been, as such. Where and when their Chiefs resided, origins of the name and time frame/locations descended from.

Remember that clan lists and boards are more inclusive than strictly Genealogy and History, but that there are guidelines as posted by John Hansen when he created the Boards.

of planned Gatherings, Highland Games or Reunions for
the Clan, Sept, Surnames and the Associations.

Please reply to this post and change the subject heading to
the name of the group that is posting the news. Then
keep that thread current with the news etc of your Clan, Sept
Surname, or Association.

The benefit of having your own thread here is that you can
post the URL in newsletter or emails etc to newsgroups or
mailing lists etc. That way, any interested parties of the
Clan, Sept, or even a unique family group can always come
to your own thread for news of the latest events.

The posting here will also be visible for an extended period vs
the short retention time of the mailing lists.

Please feel free to post this notice to other surname
message boards and mailing lists that would be
interested in this new message board topic.

This thread is intended for posting of current URLS of other
web-sites that have information on the history or information
on the Surname or Clan. These web sites can include
archives, libraries, or just the Clan or Sept web site etc
So Clan Secretaries can keep this thread current or just
a interested member of the surname that has the
web site for their own family.

Clan Associations postings

Dear All:

This thread/topic is intended as a forum for the
Clan to post their Notices and the Clan Associations
to post their web sites, notices of meetings and
gatherings. Even Newsletters ( by permission of the
Clan officials) are permitted here.

The correct procedure for posting here is to:
A: do a reply to this message. Erase the subject heading
above and then >
B: enter the name of your association and connection
to the clan.
C: Follow on postings are then replied to that unique
association. I would think that subject and dates
would then be appropriate subject headings.

The intention is to allow the Clan to have a thread
and each respective association to have a thread that
it can maintain with its newsletters and notices.
That way the basic thread of the association can be
referenced by URL in emails and other web sites.

Please forward this message to the Clan headquarters office,
its international associations and
other affiliated groups that may be interested in
posting here. Posting this notice to the Surnames message boards
and Surname mailing list or sending to Secretary of the
Clan, the Clan Associations and the Septs of the Clan
would also be appreciated.

Ancestors

Dear All:

Please start a separate sub-thread for each Clan ancestor.

The thread on this board (and the mailing list) is intended for
comments, hints on how to locate, and discussions
on those distant ancestors ( sometimes brick walls) that are
very hard to locate. Anyone with knowledge of the
Clan Ancestors or searching for ancestors and especially
the Clan Genealogist are especially encouraged to post
their finding on the Clan ancestors.

Please do not use this board for merely looking for
recent descendants. That function is better in the
Surname message boards and mailing lists.

Use the standard procedure in the subject header of
inserting your family ancestor information in the following format
NAME > location > dates
