I'm researching my McConnell family and have researched my McKinney family in New Jersey and my Foster family from Ireland. Our McConnell family has Y chromosome DNA test results, and we'd like to compare those results with DNA test results for men whose surnames are variants of the surname McDonald, including McConnell, MacDonald, McDaniel, McDonnell, Donald, Donaldson, and others. Current exchange rates make DNA testing at labs in the US extremely attractive for those with euros or pounds to spend, and I'd like to encourage researchers of my Irish surnames to consider testing at this time.
It's generally best to join a surname project when ordering Y chromosome DNA testing. By ordering your kit through a surname project, you obtain a group discount and join a group of researchers working together on your surname. Surname projects have volunteer project administrators who can provide a great deal of assistance to members seeking to understand their test results. Of course, if you are interested in joining a surname project for one of my surnames, you are also welcome to contact me with questions.
The Clan Donald DNA project established by Clan Donald USA accepts all men with surnames that are variants of the name McDonald and certain other men with evidence of a Clan Donald connection for their male lines. The project has been around for a long time, has an outstanding website, and has grown very large. The large size of the project is very beneficial to members; currently, they can compare results and look for matches from among 535 men whose results have already been posted to the project results tables. Most of these men carry surnames that are variants of the name McDonald. The project is growing rapidly, and so is the number of men in the database. To learn more about this project, you can e-mail me and/or visit the project website at http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/
I have not yet located a male from my McKinney line to test, but there are McKinney men from New Jersey lines already in the Kinney/McKinney DNA projects originated by Georgia Kinney Bopp about 5 years ago. You can learn more about these projects at their freepages website at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gkbopp/KINNEY/Resea...
My Foster line is said to have originated in County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. Some day, I would like to find a man from this line to participate in the Foster DNA project at http://www.fosterdna.org/
