Just recently learned that the reason I couldn't find the origins of my McDannald family is that the immigrant had changed his name from Donely. Family tradition is that they were Scottish who spent some time in Ulster before coming to America. A crest ring handed down in the family is for the Clan Donald of Glengerry.
Does anyone know if the Clan Donald had a branch that called itself Donelly/Donely ?
I figure with all the persecutions in the old country that there may have been several name changes.
Our group ended up in the Virginia Valley in the 1700s.
