Hi! i am doing the same research and looking for the same person... I have been able to trace Nancy Agnes Duncan's lineage into the 1600s but at James i have fallen short. Have you found anything of note since you posted this?

Many thanks to Todd Myers who served as the Board Administrator. Todd has decided to pursue his research efforts and since I'm the new administrator of the ERSKINE Mailing List, he asked if I would take over the tasks connected with administering this board as well.

Please join me in thanking Todd for his hard work and I'm looking forward to being part of this board.

Carol Reed Kennedy
Direct descendant of Christopher (Charles) Erskine (Askins), b. abt. 1700, d. Abington, MA, m. Susanna Robinson, dau of Gains (Gaius) Robinson.

Erskine research

Karen, Your story of hitting a genealogical brick wall is not uncommon. For example, the United States federal census records for 1890 were all but lost in a fire in the 1920's. This has caused me great problems trying to trace my grandfather's family through Chicago and back to Sweden.

I have heard about the Belfast fire as well. How far have you traced Erskine back in the United States? Have you found the immigration records/ships records? Those records probably exist here in the US and with those records you can begin tracing Erskine back into Ireland and you might then be able to trace Erskine from Ireland back to Scotland. It is impossible to work the other way unless you have some ancient family documents. Don't give up. There are many ways to get around the lost Belfast records to research your Erskine line back to Ireland and hopefully Scotland.
Best regards,
Todd Myers

Clan Erskine

Dear Todd,

My family migrated from Scotland to Ireland in the 1600 or 1700's. My Dad told me every male descendent in our family has the name Erskine in it. Ex: my Dad's name was Charles William Erskine Duncan, his father was named William Erskine Duncan, his father before him was also William Erskine Duncan and so on. The first William migrated to New York from Ireland prior to 1800. Apparently years ago there was a fire in the Belfast records Office and only 11,000 documents were saved. This is heartbreaking. These were records for Scotland, Ireland, Wales, etc. This have proven to be a huge roadblock in going further back in my family tree. If you or others have any info as to how my family might have incorporated Clan Erskine into Clan Duncan, I would be greatly indebted to you. Thank you very much.

Karen Duncan

Hi All -
I'm trying to locate some information on my immigrant ancestor, James Erskine. He was born in Ireland (I think) on July 25, 1757. He married Nancy Agnes Duncan, born Dec 24, 1764. They were married about 1788 in Ireland and departed Co Antrim, Ireland, for the USA and arrived in Charleston, SC in 1789. I have everything from this point on, but would really appreciate anything earlier than 1789 in Ireland. Many thanks for your help!
John

Thank you so much for the info. I've traced the family back to 1833 where they lived in New York for 2 generations. For some reason when I try to go further, records appear showing a Charles Elias Duncan as being the father of the first heir given the Erskine "middle" name. My dad said we could trace our line clear back to Ireland because of that one unique identifier and yet it's missing from the 1833 Duncans. I don't know if it's a mistake in documentation or a mistake on my dad's part. I did learn something rather interesting though. The first surnames were matriarchal. It appears the name "Erskine" was attributed to women in our early days. The thought occured to me that at some point a ggggggrandmother's maiden name was Erskine and rather than giving that up when she got married to a Duncan, (when patriarchal surnames became customary), her name was incorporated into the names of the male heirs. That's kind of wild, huh? Of course, I could be way off base :-)

Karen

Clan and Associations postings

Dear All:

This thread/topic is intended as a forum for the
Clan to post their Notices and the Clan Associations
to post their web sites, notices of meetings and
gatherings. Even Newsletters ( by permission of the
Clan officials) are permitted here.

The correct procedure for posting here is to:
A: do a reply to this message. Erase the subject heading
above and then >
B: enter the name of your association and connection
to the clan.
C: Follow on postings are then replied to that unique
association. I would think that subject and dates
would then be appropriate subject headings.

The intention is to allow the Clan to have a thread
and each respective association to have a thread that
it can maintain with its newsletters and notices.
That way the basic thread of the association can be
referenced by URL in emails and other web sites.

Please forward this message to the Clan headquarters office,
its international associations and
other affiliated groups that may be interested in
posting here. Posting this notice to the Surnames message boards
and Surname mailing list or sending to Secretary of the
Clan, the Clan Associations and the Septs of the Clan
would also be appreciated.

Best Regards
John A Hansen
Board Admin

Dear All:

Please start a separate sub-thread for each Clan ancestor.

The thread on this board (and the mailing list) is intended for
comments, hints on how to locate, and discussions
on those distant ancestors ( sometimes brick walls) that are
very hard to locate. Anyone with knowledge of the
Clan Ancestors or searching for ancestors and especially
the Clan Genealogist are especially encouraged to post
their finding on the Clan ancestors.

Please do not use this board for merely looking for
recent descendants. That function is better in the
Surname message boards and mailing lists.

Use the standard procedure in the subject header of
inserting your family ancestor information in the following format
NAME > location > dates

Best Wishes and Happy Hunting to All

John A Hansen
Board Admin
