Sam -- You're probably right that wile the Grant rooster was out having a merry old time, a Gordon rooster slipped into the henhouse! 8-)I'd seen that ref to Efingham being a Surgeon's Mate with the old 97th, but evidently nobody noticed John as also being with him. Now, as to the DNA, if you can follow Howard's descendants down to the present and find a distant cousin to test to at least 37 markers (paying the bill, if necessary) we can determine which side of him the Gordon DNA was introduced. If he tests as a Grant, then the Gordon DNA came in after Howard. If he tests as a Gordon, then the Gordon DNA originated with him or one of his ancestors.
