Seeking further information about William GRANT and his origins:

I. William GRANT (934) was a half-pay lieutenant, First Royals, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was born at Carron, Parish of Abelour, Morayshire, Scotland. He was Lieutenant in the 1st Royal Carron Regiment, Carron Parish, Aberlour, Scotland. He resided at Gladhill. He fought under General Wolfe at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759 during the Seven Years War. As a soldier he earned the right to draw land and settle in Canada but he chose to return to Scotland. William gave his eldest son Lewis "Power of Attorney" to draw land to which he, William, was entitled and never claimed. Two of William's sons went to the USA about the same time that Lewis came to Canada. He married Catherine GRANT, daughter of Lewis GRANT, circa 1765 at Scotland. He was buried at Scotland. Children:

A. Lewis GRANT was born in 1771 at Carron, Parish of Abelour, Morayshire, Scotland. He was educated before 1791 at Aberdeen, Scotland, in medicine, but quit before completion. He immigrated in 1791 to Canada. Mrs. SIMCOE from Lewis GRANT's boat identifies Scarborough Bluffs. "Mr. GRANT who was provincial surveyor of Upper and Lower Canada, came to Canada in 1780 by way of St. Johns Newfoundland, and erected Grants Mills, about a century ago. These he operated for fifty years." He "built the first gristmill in the district, hauling the machinery 100 miles from Montreal by oxen, as there were then no railroads." "Early mills: ... Grant's mill, on the Nation river, in Edwardsburg, was built by Louis GRANT, a land surveyor" in 1805. He married Anna GUERNSEY, daughter of Daniel GUERNSEY and Rachel JONES, on 16 Mar 1805 at Edwardsburgh Twp, Grenville Co, ON. He was one of fourteen deputy surveyors in the province on 25 Apr 1805 at ON. He died on 3 Jun 1855 at Grants Mills, Grenville Co, ON. He was buried at South Gower Cemetery, South Gower Twp, Grenville Co, ON.

C. Eliza GRANT was born in 1776.

D. Mary GRANT was born in 1779.

E. Anderly GRANT was born in 1782.
