Thank you very much, Lauren,

I finally got around to joining Clan MacNaughton this afternoon. My family has helped man the MacNaughton tent at the Southern Maryland Celtic Festival and the Anne Arundel County Scottish Festival for a couple of years now, but no one there can tell me the precise connection between the Hendrys and the MacNaughtons. Me thinks it has something to do with "Bog Henry, son of Nechtan", the old Pictish king. But I'm not sure. I will try to keep looking.

Are you affiliated with the clan?

Bob Hendry
Southern Maryland
bhendry@cheerful.com
Hello Bob:

Congratulations on joining the organization that supports the fellowship of the Clan MacNaughton! Your dues and your committment to volunteer at the clan tent will help them to continue in this important role.

You asked if I am affiliated with the clan. The answer is no. I am currently International President of my clan, Genealogist and chair for the genealogical committee of another, member of two others and volunteer in some capacity for all 4 that I belong to. I am currently the President of the Scottish Information Society and have been a Rootsweb Volunteer since 1996. I am the admin for many of the clan resources as I am familiar with so many of the clans and their organizations. I have had the pleasure of meeting several of the clan chiefs and also the Lord Lyon of Scotland. I also lecture on Scottish Genealogy.

Yours Aye,

Lauren

Hello Bob:

Please read my post regarding the term "sept".
http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.ethnic.celtic.scottish.mac...

As to the reason that any name or family is associated with a clan, I offer the following. Generally speaking, an associated family might be known as a sept to a clan due to marriage to a clansmen/woman, living in the same area as the chief/clan, manrent, swearing of allegience to the Chief -- sometimes adopting the name as well. A Chieftainship was an elected position in times of olde and in modern time is an inherited position. The Chief was the patriarch or matriarch (some clans have female chiefs -- Hunter, for example) who took care of the needs of his clan -- supplied food, shelter, etc. In return, the members of the clan would stand by the Chief in time of war and inter-clan raiding. The Chief was never "above" the clan.

As to the precise reason that Hendry is listed as a Sept of MacNaughton, I am not familiar enough with your clan's history to begin to address that question. And truth be told, it is not always known precisely as the relationships have gone on for hundreds of years.

I might suggest that if you want to learn more, it may be of benefit to you to attend a Scottish games and gathering in your area and seek out the clan tent area. The Clan MacNaughton may or may not have a tent (and volunteer!) in attendance and may be able to provide you more solid leads. At minimum, you will experience what it is to be part of this larger Scottish family you have been blessed to be born into.

You will find a schedule for Scottish Games and Gatherings posted to the Scottish Information Society's site. Kevin McLachlan has worked diligently to make this the most comprehensive games listing on the Internet. Currently it includes all 50 US states and he is working toward adding Canadian events and more as time permits.

Yours Aye,

Lauren M. Boyd, FSA Scot
President
Scottish Information Society
http://www.scottishinfo.org

The Term "Sept"

Rather than paraphrase, I will quote Dr. Phil Smith from page 5 of his book, "Tartans for Me!"

"Sept" is a term borrowed from Irish culture in the nineteenth century to explain the use of a variety of surnames by members of a single clan. In Ireland, "sept" is roughly synonymous with the Scottish "clan" and refers to an intra-related family. Where Scots would refer to "MacGregor and his clan" an Irish historian might say "O'Niell and his sept." Only in the case of larger clans with distinct and sometimes widely separated sub-families is the term "sept" appropriate in Scotland. The various branches of Clan Donald, for example, all using the name "MacDonald of ...." or "MacDonell of..." may properly be viewed as septs. The many other names of Clan Donald are just that -- names of Clan Donald.

The variety of surnames within a Scottish clan do not represent separate and definable sub-clans but instead reflect the vagaries of transition of the Gaels into the English naming system as well as marriages, migrations and occupations. The main family itself may have developed a variety of surnames. The preferred modern usage is to avoid the use of the term "sept" and to simply describe these names as they are -- surnames of the family and of allied or dependent families. It is preferable to speak of "The names and families of Clan X" rather than to call a name "a sept of Clan X."

Lauren M. Boyd, FSA Scot
President
Scottish Information Society
http://www.scottishinfo.org

Admin Note re Genealogical Posts to the Clan MacNaughton Board (& list)

Dear Clan MacNaughton Posters:

Please bear in mind that the genealogical portion of the Clan MacNaughton list and board should keep within the time frame of the Clan System being active in Scotland. This would be up through 1745-47 as it was quashed following the Jacobite Wars.

Should you post genealogical queries to the Board and find them "deleted", take a look to the MacNaughton Surname Board as I likely have moved them to the surname board where they are more appropriate to the topic. [If you have a varient spelling used in your post, they may be moved to a board that shares that spelling,if it exists, otherwise they will go to MacNaughton .]

This is not to say that the Clan MacNaughton list and board are not for genealogical queries and posts. This is to provide a reminder that they are CLAN specific and not general in time and place. Period circa 1000 through 1747 and Scotland, Ireland, Europe in geographic nature. Think of those under the Clan system and where they would have been, as such. Where and when their Chiefs resided, origins of the name and time frame/locations descended from.

Remember that clan lists and boards are more inclusive than strictly Genealogy and History, but that there are guidelines as posted by John Hansen when he created the Boards.

Yours Aye,

Lauren M.

Dear All:

This thread is intended for posting of current URLS of other
web-sites that have information on the history or information
on the Surname or Clan. These web sites can include
archives, libraries, or just the Clan or Sept web site etc
So Clan Secretaries can keep this thread current or just
a interested member of the surname that has the
web site for their own family.

Please reply to this post and change the subject heading to
the name of the web site that is posting the news. Then keep that
thread current with news etc of your web site ( change of
address etc)

The benefit of having your own thread here is that you can
post the URL in newsletter or emails etc to newsgroup or
mailing lists etc. That way, any interested parties of the
Clan, Sept, or even a unique family group can always come
to your own web site for news and information.

The posting here will also be visible for an extended period vs
the short retention time of the mailing lists.

Please feel free to post this notice to other surname
message boards and mailing lists that would be
interested in this new message board.

Best Regards
John A Hansen
Message Board Admin

Directions to site:

www.rootsweb.com
> Boards
> Topics
> Ethnic/Race
> Celtic
> Scottish Clans

Clan and Associations postings

Dear All:

This thread/topic is intended as a forum for the
Clan to post their Notices and the Clan Associations
to post their web sites, notices of meetings and
gatherings. Even Newsletters ( by permission of the
Clan officials) are permitted here.

The correct procedure for posting here is to:
A: do a reply to this message. Erase the subject heading
above and then >
B: enter the name of your association and connection
to the clan.
C: Follow on postings are then replied to that unique
association. I would think that subject and dates
would then be appropriate subject headings.

The intention is to allow the Clan to have a thread
and each respective association to have a thread that
it can maintain with its newsletters and notices.
That way the basic thread of the association can be
referenced by URL in emails and other web sites.

Please forward this message to the Clan headquarters office,
its international associations and
other affiliated groups that may be interested in
posting here. Posting this notice to the Surnames message boards
and Surname mailing list or sending to Secretary of the
Clan, the Clan Associations and the Septs of the Clan
would also be appreciated.

Best Regards
John A Hansen
Board Admin

Ancestors postings

Dear All:

Please start a separate sub-thread under this
thread ( just do a reply) for each Clan ancestor.

The thread on this board (and the mailing list) is intended for
comments, hints on how to locate, and discussions
on those distant ancestors ( sometimes brick walls) that are
very hard to locate. Anyone with knowledge of the
Clan Ancestors or searching for ancestors and especially
the Clan Genealogist are especially encouraged to post
their finding on the Clan ancestors.

Please do not use this board for merely looking for
recent descendants. That function is better in the
Surname message boards and mailing lists.

Use the standard procedure in the subject header of
inserting your family ancestor information in the following format
NAME > location > dates

Best Wishes and Happy Hunting to All

John A Hansen
Board Admin
