Dear Betty:

No the male Y DNA does not pass to the female
descendants. The mother mtDNA passes to all
of her children ( Male and Female) but only the
Female child can pass it along.

Since you are looking to trace the Male line ( Ross)
then you need to find male cousins. These could be
descendants of your mothers brothers or even your
grandfathers brothers etc etc. You just need to go back
until you find some male descendants. Then your claim
to the Clan Ross is done by association. ie this was my
xxxx and I'm related to them by yyy .

Hope this works for you.
Best Regard
