Dear Stephen
I have just decided to google the Appin Stewart clan & came across your entry.Through the genesreunited site a few years ago I was able to contact 2 remote cousins in Scotland & was thus able to expand my research. My Grandfather was Donald Stewart-MacInnes & his Mother was an Appin Stewart. We have followed her family back to 1700. In 1963 & 2002 I spent some time in Oban & visited Appin several times.Castle Stalcair(Stalker) was built as a hunting lodge for their kinsman King James but after his death they lost it to the Campbells. The French spelling of the name is incorrect, it should always be Stewart as they were the descendants of Walter, High Steward of Scotland who married the daughter of Robert the Bruce. Steward becoming Stewart.
M.s.Bartlett, New Zealand

Family moved to Dunbarton (north of Glasgow) by 1841 census and work in wool industry. Christina marries John McHaffie at Dunbarton in 1851 and have son William in 1854. Archibald, Mary immigrated to New Brunswick, Canada through Boston in 1853. John and Christina with William follow.
Dont't know when Mary Stuart died in New Brunswick.

My husband is John Stewart.

His family has diaries that offer insight into past history for the family.

We have notes that refer to Alexander Stewart, descendant ofthe Duke of Albany, came from Appin in the year 1700.

We have Charles Stewart c1775 Appin m Margaret McDonald. Margaret was the dau of John MacDonald son of Donald McDonald of Glencoe.

This family group went from Appin to North Uist to Nova Scotia.

My husband did the DNA from Ancestry. Can we compare with the Appin Stewarts? Where can we find the info?

Help! Ann
Hi Jody,
Sorry to get back to you so late. There are many descendents of Duncan Stewart here in the U.S. who have tried unsuccessfully to identify his family line in Scotland.
I have been to Edinburgh a number of times - The Stewart Society and the large library in town - and had no luck. I even hired a well known Scottish genealogist to search.
We know Duncan lived in Ipswich, Massachusetts as an indentured servant to one George Hadley. There were many prisoner from the Battles of Worcester and Dunbar who were sent to the Americas at that time but the ship's records are incomplete and we could find no evidence from the old English prisoner lists. If you find anything it would be wonderful. Keep in touch. Pam

Hi Nicole - Your dad would want to ask for an autosomal dna test such as the one offered at FTDNA. It would give him the total picture of his genetic inheritance including the maternal DNA. Good luck and do let us know (fellow descendants of old Duncan) what turns up.

Inez

My father has done a DNA test. What would you recommend? Would I need to do the test? Thanks for your help.
Sincerely, Jody Nicole

Hi Pam! My name is Jody Nicole and I have just begun doing research for my Dad's side of the family following his mother. She was Mary Helen Stuart. Here line is Floyd Stuart-Harvey Stuart-Silas Stuart jr. - Silas Stuart , Sr - Jeremiah Stuart Jr - Jeremiah Sr. - Richard Stuart - Ebenezer Stewart - Duncan Stewart.

I have moved to London, England and I'm heading up to Scotland next week. It would be lovely to have a clear connection to where Duncan came from and which clan he belonged to.

Did you get anymore information?

My dad did his DNA -- not sure if that would get to the Stuart/Stewart side since it stems from his mother.

Thanks for any insight or suggestions!

Cheers,
Jody

Thanks, for the ideas, Mike.
I have long ago given up on confirming Duncan's Scottish links.
Professionals in Scotland have said that so many records have been lost that sometimes you must surrender to that fact.
Here in the U.S.the NEHGS has done a lot of work and could find nothing. Others of us have poked and read and reviewed documents for so many years that, unless we can confirm a new source here or in Scotland I must confess, I cannot get excited.
Yours in digging, Pam

Dear Kathi,
Thanks for your support. I would join the Stewart DNA group but, as I understand it, male to male descendant DNA is required for conclusive lineage results. We have no willing men in our tree so far.
The 'family tree' is old and very large. Written on parchment paper probably in the mid 1900's and covering only the more ancient lines. It appears to be trying to link Duncan Stewart of Ipswich to the Stewarts of Appin.
Not possible nor would it be very readable to copy.
If there is a head of your group that I can trust to read and share it, I could find it and send it as long as it's returned.
Dear Mike,
Thanks for the quick reply. I am a bit fuzzy on how the Ardrsheal line and the Stewarts of Appin line up. Nonetheless your news sounds as though it may be encouraging.
With your urging, I'll investigate the site you mentioned.
I have no image of Duncan from the 1600's. There are a number of court records where he is mentioned. I even have the name of the man to whom he was indentured in Ipswich MA - George Hadley. Have contacted his descendants to see if they have any records. None found.
I will have to think if I have any photo's of his grandsons but yes, I do have that fragile family tree. It was evidently put together by another relative of ours (?) many years ago.
At the Stewart Society in Edinborough, and as you have probably found online, there are many of us in search of a thread linking our Duncan Stewart to his home in Scotland.
Pam Gould - Maui HI

Sorry about all of that trouble. First, I have good news regarding the DNA on the Adrsheal line, it has been done. Mine is a very close match too. We suspect our common ancestor is John 4th of Ardsheal. More on that another time.

I am finding that the DNA math is best for narrowing focus on research. It will eliminate many possibilities and dial into a specific century and region. I would strongly recommend this avenue to get started again. FamilytreeDNA.com

Any chance you have a scan of an early image of Duncan, his sons or grandsons? Also, you wouldn't still have that tree you mentioned do you?

Cheers,
Mike
San Diego

I had given up. I hired David Dobson for a small fortune and he found nothing. Hired genealogists on this side of the lake and they found nothing. Went to Edinborough, both the libraries and the Stewart Society, and found nothing conclusive. The Appin clan did not reply to my queries. I have some interesting original, hand-made family trees on parchment with notes in the margins that the staff at the Stewart Soc. gave me (please don't turn them in).
As of five years ago, none of the surviving male Duncan Stewart descendants would submit to DNA testing.
I had taken a prolonged break until your email appeared.
Thanks for the surprise and your interest. I have three ancestors in Armagh No. Ireland in the 1800's, but cannot follow any paperwork to Scotland. My oldest is Hugh (c.1800), his son William and his David Allan Stewart (1872-1916). David left for the US in 1890's. I have more info and would enjoy collaborating. mtstew@me.com

I'm now in San Diego, CA

Cheers,
Mike

Hi,
I'm also tracing my Stewart of Appin clan. Charles Stewart of Achara (1840-1916) was my great grandfather. His father Duncan John Stewart married Harriet Gore at the British Embassy Chapel in Paris, France. This is as far as I can get. Please can you help me with more information.
Thank you.
Mark

I do not think that there was a 13th Stewart of Appin, directly. Dugald(10th of Appin) died in 1769( no sons). The title then passed to Ardsheal, John 5th of Appin's second wife and family.
Ardsheal hold the title today.

Stewart of Appin, circa 1908

Looking for help to identify an old postcard which I have here - one of a series published circa 1908 of Scottish Clan Leaders and Aristocracy.

Most of the subjects of these cards I have been able to identify clearly by searching the net, but this one has defeated me - there appears to be nothing online regarding the head of Stewart of Appin from about the 18th Century through to the 16th incumbent in the mid 20th Century.

Titled, "MacIain Stiubhaird na h-Apunn (Stewart of Appin)", the card features a half length portrait of a relatively young man - interestingly (significantly ?) this is the only card in the series where the subject is not in traditional Scottish dress.

Can anyone tell me more of this individual - I am guessing that he must have been the 13th or 14th of Appin but beyond that, I have drawn a blank.

I have this image online - If you want to see it, please use the url below -

http://www.edwardian-delights.com/vp8642.jpg

Wearing the tartan?

I am a descendant of Lady Jean Stewart and Malcolm 3rd Lord Fleming, but one listing adds "one of many illegitimate children, several of whom became prominant figures in Scotland." This geneology continues through the John Flemings to Captain Alexander Fleming who moved to America with his son John Fleming and grandson Charles and their wives. They came between 1652 and 1668,probably when Cromwell invaded Scotland or right after Charles ll was restored to power and threatened the Presbyterian Church causing war. I suspect they were either leaving because of the threat, or were sent as prisoners after having been arrested.
They settled in Virginia.

I am volunteering at a Re-enactment fair in June and must have an accurate costume for the 1700's. Because of my lineage, I want to go as "one of my ancestors". The time period would be right for me to be the child of Charles and Suzannah Fleming. I would be born in Virginia, but my parents both born in Scotland. My question is, would I have worn the tartan plaid over my chemise and petticoat? And would it be offensive for me to choose the Stewart plaid to use in my costume? Also, if Flemings did NOT wear this plaid, does anyone know which one they would have worn?
Since this is a bit off the geneology topic, please email me privately with your answers if you will. pjadams@sbcglobal.net

You will still find mention of the
Society at Tartans.com as that was the main function of
that site -- to provide a location to enable contact with
the clans.

The new site will allow for expanded posting of items of interest to Stewarts [of all spellings.] Please visit
http://www.clansstewart.org

Note: there *are* 2 "s" for clans Stewart as the Stewarts
are not one clan, but rather, many clans.

Yours Aye,

Lauren Boyd
Chair, Genealogical Committee
Genealogist
Clan Stewart Society in America, Inc.
genealogist @ clanstewart.org

Dear All:

This thread/topic is intended as a forum for the
Clan to post their Notices and the Clan Associations
to post their web sites, notices of meetings and
gatherings. Even Newsletters ( by permission of the
Clan officials) are permitted here.

The correct procedure for posting here is to:
A: do a reply to this message. Erase the subject heading
above and then >
B: enter the name of your association and connection
to the clan.
C: Follow on postings are then replied to that unique
association. I would think that subject and dates
would then be appropriate subject headings.

The intention is to allow the Clan to have a thread
and each respective association to have a thread that
it can maintain with its newsletters and notices.
That way the basic thread of the association can be
referenced by URL in emails and other web sites.

Please forward this message to the Clan headquarters office,
its international associations and
other affiliated groups that may be interested in
posting here. Posting this notice to the Surnames message boards
and Surname mailing list or sending to Secretary of the
Clan, the Clan Associations and the Septs of the Clan
would also be appreciated.

Best Regards
John A Hansen
Board Admin

Dear All:

Please start a separate sub-thread under this
thread ( just do a reply) for each Clan ancestor.

The thread on this board (and the mailing list) is intended for
comments, hints on how to locate, and discussions
on those distant ancestors ( sometimes brick walls) that are
very hard to locate. Anyone with knowledge of the
Clan Ancestors or searching for ancestors and especially
the Clan Genealogist are especially encouraged to post
their finding on the Clan ancestors.

Please do not use this board for merely looking for
recent descendants. That function is better in the
Surname message boards and mailing lists.

Use the standard procedure in the subject header of
inserting your family ancestor information in the following format
NAME > location > dates

Best Wishes and Happy Hunting to All

John A Hansen
Board Admin
