For starters I would suggest subscribing to the
Stewart list at Rootsweb. There has been an ongoing
discussion of Stewart roots for many years. Many of
the Clan Society members belong to the list. I have
found the level of posts, when I have been subscribed,
to be very good and may be more achedemic than on other
I would also look to the Stewart bulletin boards that
Clan members had posted to over the years.
And I would check with a large library in your area
to see if they have the Stewart Clan Magazine in their
research area. The publication has been out of print for
many years, but had been printed for about 30 if memory
serves. I believe it held about 50 years of genealogical
queries and research.
The only true way to determine which branch of the Stewart
Houses or cadets or branches your line *may* descend from
is to trace your Stewart genealogy. There is no Stewart Black branch. There is a Black Stewart tartan. Most likely
you are not a "Royal" Stewart, however, may have descended from an original line. There were Stewarts everywhere, so
without doing the genealogy to compliment the geography you
may find Stewarts in you would still be guessing.
