Are the BURNSIDES actually WALLACES by a different name? (Sort of a sept.) Some Burnsides believe they are. The story was put thus in a letter written in 1916, quoting a man then 80 years old (born in 1836) who had a good memory."The Burnside family's original name was Wallace...They lived on a creek in Scotland, called a burn. They were given the name Sideburn Wallace to designate them from the balace of the family that had gotten very numerous. In the course of time, the name Wallace was dropped and they were called Burnsides." All this happened hundreds of years ago, because some Burnsides (various spellings) were documented in the 16th century. Wallaces, please comment.
