YOUNG/GASKINS/FERGUSON/SMITH of Northeastern Kentucky

Classification: Query
Surnames: YOUNG, GASKINS, FERGUSON, SMITH
Attempting to find all information possible on my paternal tri-racial heritage. My father's people all had origins in Fleming, Bath, and Nicholas Counties in Kentucky.

His father's side were named YOUNG and GASKINS. I have very little info on my great-grandfather, ROBERT D. YOUNG (1861-1947). My father knew him and there are pictures. His mixed race (particularly strong Native features) is apparent. His parents were LEWIS (d. 1907) and MARY JANE YOUNG (d. 1904), of Bath County, KY. I have no information on him having any siblings, but would love to make contact with their descendants, if any.

His wife, my great-grandmother PAULINE GASKINS (1864-1917), was born in Flemingsburg. Although the family always knew her as PAULINE, she is listed in her mother's household in the 1880 census as "PAULINA" (13). (This is the correct record, however, because names match up to the family bible.)

Pauline's mother, MAHALA GASKINS (d. 12/6/1901), is listed as Mulatto, Head of Household, and age 56,on the 1880 census. She appears on the 1870 census, as well, but I have not yet seen the image--only the index. I have no information on her parentage, except to assume she was the product of a slave/slave-owner relationship. This has yet to be ascertained.

Living in the home at the time of the census, were Pauline's remaining sisters: LILLE (21); BETTIE (18); BELLE (11); and NANNIE SMITH (24). NANNIE was married and her husband, WARNER SMITH (27) and son TOM (1) also resided in the home. I would like to determine the locations of any of PAULINE's sisters' descendants and make contact with them.

There is no father listed in the household on the census for Pauline and her siblings. There is a family bible entry under MAHALA's name for a man named SQUIRE K. FERGUSON (d. 4/14/1903). He may have been the girls' father, but I have been unable to locate any records on him other than the bible entry.

I have a few photos on my genealogy webpage. (Please allow ample time for loading.) Any information would be welcomed.
