Re: Passenger Lists / Germany to U.S.

One may also wish to consult NARA's Genealogy/ Personal History: Passenger Lists database online ( http://aad.archives.gov/aad/series-list.jsp?cat=GP44 )
which essentially reprents the abstracted data from the multi-volume work, Germans in America. G in A is the same resource Ancestry.com uses to base its findings regarding many of its Ships Passenger Lists. NARA's is better organized, and is a much more reliable source: I found a manifest from a SPL from ancestry ca. 1859 but, the NY arrival date seemed wrong. Everywhere I looked on line the ship (Oder) was ID'd as being built in 1873 -- then I checked the NARA databse referenced. I was able to confirm the immigration data, and later found the 1st Oden ship was commissioned in 1851. It was the 2nd -- the S.S. Oden -- that was built in 1873.
The Gille's in Quincy. Illinois

I have been researching my GILLE ancestors in Quincy, Adams CO, Illinois. I have not been able to find much information on my direct line. It starts with John Christopher GILLE who arrived to this country in 1847 from Germany.

I have noticed that there are still some GILLE's living there. I was wondering if they might be related to my ancestors.

Does anyone have any information on the GILLE family in Quincy?

Thank you so much!

Thank you for replying. You are exactly right. I managed to figure out that it was Stotser/Stotzer. But they are not connected to my Sawyer family. I am looking for the maiden name of a Hannah Sawyer who died 1 May 1868 at age 22.
wife of A.P. (Sawyer). She is buried in the Hazel Green Cemetery in Hardin County, Iowa. A.P. Sawyer is my gr-grandfather and I thought maybe she was the Hannah I was looking for, but I found Hannah Stotser alive and well and married to someone else. So I am still looking for my Hannah. Thanks again, Margaret

Caspers Family from Germany

Looking for info about the Caspers family. James Caspers is listed in the 1880 census living as a boarder in Chicago. He was born in Germany in 1856, his parents were also born in Germany (Prussia). His parents could possibly be Anton and Sophie Caspers but this hasn't been documented yet. James moved to Washington Territory about 1883. He was married to Carrie Peickert and had a son named Lambert. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have any given names to work with?
There were several Kehring families in the areas you mentioned along with River Forest, Maywood, & I think I saw Elmwood Park & Cicero.
Do you need census information?
If you have some first names, that would help.
Kathleen

Altenheim is not the same as Forest Home. A mile or so away? Not far.
Forest Home is also known as Waldheim Cemetery. That's the direct German translation.

Forest Home Cemetery (aka Waldheim)
863 Des Plaines Ave
Forest Park, IL 60130
888-277-1212 (I hope this is the correct ph. #; not sure)

Altenheim means old people's home - which it was. The German of the community built it for their aged relatives. Then they (Altenheim) had the cemetery behind it - adjacent to Concordia Cemetery. Unfortunately, the Altenheim nursing home closed down in Sept./Oct. 2000.

Forest Home charges you for burial record look ups?

Forest Park Hist. Society holds the records of Altenheim. Maybe they have an index for Forest Home too. Ask them.

-Or e-mail Oak Park, River Forest Hist. Society and see if they have an index of records for Forest Home Cemetery. And if they don't, ask them who does - maybe they know one of the libraries has a copy which would be cheaper.

The Historical Society of Oak Park and River Forest:
217 Home Avenue, Oak Park, Illinois 60302
Phone:(708) 848-6755
http://www.oprf.com/oprfhist/index.html
Email: oprfhistorymatters@sbcglobal.net

Altenheim Cemetery
7824 Madison Avenue (address is location of cemetery)
Forest Park, IL 60130
(The Historical Society of Forest Park has the Altenheim records).

Look at these other web pages -

Cook County Cemeteries
http://www.graveyards.com/list.php
&
http://www.graveyards.com/index2.html

Forest Home Cemetery; Partial Listing:
phone: 708-848-6755
http://www.interment.net/data/us/il/cook/forest_home.htm

Some are on-line here:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcook/info/cemeteries/cemetery_lis...

Regards,
Kathleen

Re: Ernest Neitz (aka Nitz, Nietz)

In looking up your family surname, I came across this in the IL post -1916 Death Database.
NIETZ PAUL R JR M/W UNK 0163498 1928-12-12 COOK ELMWOOD PARK 28-12-13

Paul Nietz, Jr. of Elmwood Park died on Dec. 12, 1928. Is this the brother of Ernest? It would make sense if the brother died at the end of 1928 and then brother Earnest would need to look for another place to live.
Also in the IL Death Databse I found:
NIETZ PAUL R M/W UNK 0022788 1948-08-05 COOK CHICAGO

He died in August of 1948. Was this Paul R. Nietz, Sr., their father?
What happened to their parents? Were there other siblings (Great Aunts and great Uncles to you) which Ernest may have gone to live with in their homes?

In the 1930 Census I found an Ernest Mietz, age 38, married 12 years. In 1930 lives at 2908 West 38th Place, Chicago. The age is a couple of years off the birthdate you indicated in your message. Could their have been a mis-spelling mistake? If he has been married for 12 years in 1930 - that puts it right at 1928...when you can no longer find him.
Did Ernest have a middle name he may have gone by?

I did check for obituaries at the Chicago Trib. on-line obituaries but didn't find anything. But there were other newspapers too at the time which were more localized.

Just wondering....
Kathleen

He probably hadn't reached full citizenship yet.

Perhaps something was wrong with his Alien registration or Declaration of Intent. "Olive Tree Genealogy" has good write-ups on Alien records, naturalizations, etc.

Am sure the reference librarian in Clay County would be a help on how to direct your research.

Best regards,

Kathleen

You say the Historical Society of Forest Park has the records for Waldheim/Forest Home. How does one look at them online? I hate to write Forest Home as they are quite expensive.

Thanks Kathleen. You have been a big help. Some of my family members are buried in Forest Home Cemetery. Is that the same as Altenheim? I will write to the Historical Society of Forest Park. Thanks a heap.

John

Thanks Kathleen. I have about beaten the bushes out of Cook County. I just received from some kind soul my father's death notice in the Chicago Daily News in 1936. My biggest wall is by great grandmother Adeline/Lena/Aldelina/etc. Kehring. She married a Henry Busch between the 1910 and 1920 Census' in Cook County and he died between the 1920 and 1930 Census. I can't find their Marriage or either of their deaths. I do have a whole bunch of first names.

Re: Ernest Neitz (aka Nitz, Nietz)

Kathleen, Thank you for your caring reply. No Paul Jr was not Ernest's brother - Paul Sr was. Ernest and Paul Sr father was Wilhelm (William) Nitz of Minnesota. There were other siblings and children from his marriage to Mary (Dent) - my grandmother. Ernest had 5 brothers - Emil Nitz, Paul Nietz, Richard Nietz, Lawrence, and Carl. Paul was the only one that I know of living in IL. Paul had 2 sons - both dead. One SAnford O. died in Traverse City MI, 1996. The other Gilford died in Oak Lawn, IL 1988. The name Mietz in the 1930 census may be him. One other point, Emil Nitz's obituary of 1955 list Ernest in Chicago as a surviving brother. Finally, Ernest Julius Nitz born Prussia July 30, 1889. Married 1910 NE. Divorced ? abt 1920 - 1924 in MN. I certainly hope this will provide better info. You can contact me direct if you want.

Re: Welcome to the new Germans in Illinois message board

Kathie: I am a researcher for many families on my family tree. The bulk of the ancestors I am researching come from the Blue Island, Illinois area.

Do you have any specific sources for the different parts of Illinois or are you going to limit your participation to the very difficult task of checking the message board?

I welcome this new site. Perhaps it will open many doors to information that my fellow researchers are seeking.

Cheers, Bev Greener

Emery Elmer Westfall

Looking for info on Westfall's and Klingensmith's in Olney (or Noble), Richland Co, ILL. My gg grandpa Emery Elmer Westfall was b. 4/19/1873 in Olney and d. 10/5/1941 in Noble and was buried in Haven Hill Cemetery in Olney. His stepfather was a Klingensmith. He married Clara Alice Steffy. I have lots of info on Steffy's and lots on Westfall's but am having trouble tying Emery into the Westfall Line. Emery was a police officer either before 1914 or after 1920 in ILL. Any info regarding this family would be greatly appreciated.
