Matiozraitis came to Scotland around 1904. Also Dielinizaitis, Szwilpa and Fannerzaitis

I am trying to find information on my late grandfathers family but I have gone so far and have now reached a dead end.

I am particularly interested in the surname of Matiozraitis which was my grandfathers surname and comes from his fathers side of the family. Does anyone have any information on this, what it means, where it is from etc?

I believe my great grandparents came to Fauldhouse, West Lothian in Scotland from Lithuania between 1901 and 1905.

My great grandmothers maiden name was Dielinizaitis.

Other names in the family I have are Szwilpa and Fannerzaitis, these may be spelt wrong as they are difficult to read on the records I have seen.

I have got quite alot of information but don't know how to learn more about them before they arrived in Scotland.

If anyone has any information on these names or can offer some advice on how to trace the name, I would be very grateful indeed.

Thank you!

Most Common Lithuanian Surnames
FYI - I came across the following entry in Wikipedia regarding the eight most popular/common surnames in Lithuania.

I justed started researching my Paulauskas line and see that the surname is the eighth most common surname in Lithuania so it will be tough trying to find the right one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_common_surnames#Li...

Most popular Lithuanian surnames 2007:

# For men For women
1 Kazlauskas Kazlauskienė
2 Stankevičius Stankevičienė
3 Jankauskas Jankauskienė
4 Petrauskas Petrauskienė
5 Vasiliauskas Vasiliauskienė
6 Žukauskas Žukauskienė
7 Paulauskas Paulauskienė
8 Urbonas Urbonienė

It's not surprising that the married female spellings (i.e., IENE ending) of the family surnames spellings align in the same rank order.

My sympathies go out to those researching the Kazlauskas surname and the challenges they face.

Tom S.

Researching W II Displaced Persons (DPs)

In May 2008, I will be going to Germany as part of a group of forty genealogists who will be doing research at the archives of the International Tracing Service (ITS) of the International Red Cross (IRC). I will be researching my father's records but will have time to do research for others as well.

The ITS is located in Bad Arolsen, Germany (see URL below):

http://www.its-arolsen.org/en/homepage/index.html

Following the end of WW II the Allies captured millions of German records regarding Jews killed in the Holocaust (Shoah) as well as information regarding other prisoners, forced workers, etc... These records were supplemented by new ones created by the Allies regarding displaced persons and others.

The ITS has 50 million individual records on 17.5 million individuals dating back to this period of history. One individual may have several records in the ITS database. These records have now been made available for research following a lengthy period of time during which access to these records was extremely limited.

I submitted an on-line inquiry to the ITS on 9 November 2007 and received a written letter from them on 28 January 2008. Based on the information I provided them, they were able to find at least 5 individual record entries regarding my father who was a DP in the French occupation zone of Germany following the end of WW II.

The information included his German address in 1947, the location of three refugee camps (Reutlingen, Rastatt, and Bremen-Grohn) he was in while a DP in Germany, as well as information regarding his emigration to the United States in 1949.

Eventually, copies of all these ITS records will be available at the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC.

I will be there for five days and likely will be able to do research regarding other Lithuanian DPs. The ITS will be providing a full-time staff member to work with every two genealogists in the group I will be a part of.

If people would like to provide me with demographic information, I will see what I can find for them. Information should include such things as:

Name of Individual (including unmarried surname if applicable)
Date of Birth
Place of Birth
Nationality
Religion
Marital Status
Name of Father
Name of Mother
Possible locations where they lived in Europe (including dates)

The more complete info I have, the more likely the ITS archivists can find something.

Let me know if you have any questions about my research offer.

Iki.

Tom

They are working to include naturalization records (1792-1966) for New York, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts.

I signed up for a one month subscription and found my grandfather's information regarding his naturalization in 1918 while in the U.S. Army.
Looking for living relatives descending from Paul (1881-1959)and Veronica (Walanga) VASITIS/Weiszutis who emmigrated from Rosliccki/Kazliski, Lithuania in 1906, to Detroit, Michigan then Toledo, Ohio. Known relatives in Cleveland, Ohio. Their children include Virginia (my grandmother), Edward, Monica, Walter, and Eleanor. Family rumor says that Paul descends from nobility and was disowned for marrying a peasant. Paul spoke like 7 languages but became a tool fitter in America. Very interesting family myths. I would love to find relatives!

Hello, I'm trying to find my relatives- my grandfather sisters- Emilija (Emily) Luksyte and Rozyte (Rose) Luksyte.

As my father said they leaved Lithuania in 1930-1932 and go to Argentina. Later, before WWII, last letters from their was from USA. WWII and Lithuania occupation by Soviets broken any relations.

When I was in Meskasalis village one old woman said to me that they go to Argentina with one man. Him name was Remeika.

Also possible that they leaved Lithuania from Perloja (Perloya) village.

Maybe somebody knows about these women or their families, descendants?

Thank you.

Eduardas Luksys.

I can only trace back to my Great-Grandfather who came from Lithuania when he was 20. He never spoke english and I am thinking that immigration might have changed his name when he got here. I have come to a dead end in my search. The surname Rasimaucus has yielded very little beyond my great-grandfather. Does anybody know anything that might be helpful?
Recently received a second copy of my great grandmothers Alien Registration Form. This time I can read the copy. Previous attempts were not readable.

The form has the village, town, or city listed as Bullokovich, Lithuania. No province is listed.

This is most likely an immigrants attempt to Americanize a Lithuanian spelling.

Is there anyone out there who is familiar with towns in Lithuania.

She came to the US in 1911. I am not sure who, if anyone, occupied Lithuania at that time.

I cannot verify but by grand mother always said she was from somewhere near Kuanus.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The last name
is spelled differnt almost each time. But with the dates and names of
the children I believe it to be them.
Paul A. and Petronella Banialis (names given to me by my great uncle)
1910 Census: Pavel Bonelis 40 est birth yr 1870 and Petroneli 33 est
birth yr 1877 (yr of immigration 1905, AL) Also lists 2 oldest
children Petras age 3 and Ona age 1 has correct year of birth. Went to Ellis Island but had an Conj eye infection and was
not allowed in. He walked through woods and came through Canada.
Buried in Casmier Cemetry, Chicago, Ill

Petronella born in Taurage, Lithhuania (some say born 1890, some
1877) Census states 1877. Came to America at age 28, docked in
Baltimore then to Chicago with her uncle. When she married (unknown
date) her brother ? came to the USA for the wedding but then
disappeared and never heard of again. Her mother was widowed and
remarried last name believed to be 'Bouzas' to a doctor. But unsure
if that was Petronella's maiden name or her mother's remarried name
(different family stories). A Devote Catholic,
Died Sept 23, 1957 buried in St, Casmiers Cemetery, Chicago, Ill

Where and how can I find information about Naturalization records,
Marriage, and births?? I have been checking ancestory.com but can't
seem to find any more info.
I have hit a brick wall.....
please contact me at momybear5@yahoo.com

Blessings~Robin

Hi-I am searching for any information on the relatives of my great-grandfather, Jonas (John) Narmontas (Norman.) He emigrated from Lithuania to the United States (Philadelphia) in approximately 1903 (he married Pranciska (Frances) Simkaite (Shimkus,) also from Telsiai. He had several brothers-Blade, sounds like blodda (Walter,) and Levonas (Leon,) who emigrated to Philadelphia, PA as well. There was one brother, Liudvikas (Ludwig,) who never arrived in Philadelphia in August 1905, but was mistakenly put on a ship to South America. I know they corresponded by mail, but never had the money to get him here, and lost touch after some time. I would greatly appreciate any information about Ludwig, or even Narmontas, Simkus and Telsiai. Thank you.

Aliuk ( cut surname? )

Trying to locate more info on JOHN ALIUK. I believe his name was 'cut'. Aleckavicz(?) Alakewicz(?) He was of Lithuanian ancestry.

I have reason to believe he is either a 1/2 or step brother to my grandmother ( Anna Dalikas Walunas )

John lived in Detroit, MI. That was in the 1940's. He later lived in Easthampton, MA. with his 'sister' ( not sure if she was a 1/2 sister or full blooded ). Her name was Katherine Aliuk Taukus. Katherine and my grandmother were 1/2 sisters.

John was married at one time, we believe. He may have gotten a divorce or lost his wife and then moved to MA to be with his widowed sister, Katherine.

John Aliuk is interred in Easthampton, MA in Brookside Cemetery.

The marker is :

ALIUK - ZAVIS

John Aliuk 1888 - 1974

Walter Zavis 1892- 1973 ( we do not know how he is linked to John/Katherine or 'our' family )

John Walkowski 1909 - 1970 ( he was married to John Aliuk's niece )

Doris Taukus 1910 - 1966 ( she was John's niece and Katherine's daughter )

I have photos and other bits of info. I am willing to share them if asked. Please feel free to ask any questions.

Any advice/direction/info is appreciated.

Patricia

( Researching : Walunas ~~ Riel ~~ Ramenda ~~ Sikora ~~ Aliuk ~~ Dalikas ~~ Stanonis ~~ Mielke ~~ Katzschmann )
I found the answer to my own question from www.thelithuanians.com. They gave me this information:

Partikas- From Irish, short form PATRIS: From Latinized Irish name PATRICIUS
From the Latin Word: patricius : in Lithuanian "kilmingasis [of highest decent],
patricius - patrriarchal [of sorts]" - extend it to Patriachal [ + -}

This might be of interest to anyone, especially those who share this name.

This has been a tough line to find details on.

1950 Trans-Atlantic Airline Flight - Abracinskas, Gross, Paplauskas, Suenlomis, Zemaitis

Laba diena,

I was doing a seach on Ancestry.com for my mother's godmother, Bertha Miciunas, and came across one listing showing her as a passenger on a Pan American Airways flight from London to Boston on 27 August 1950.

Along with her were several other Lithuanians. Does anyone recognize any of these names and have an idea as to why they might have been in England?

Abracinskas, Albert
50 W. 6th Street, So. Boston
Born Massachusetts

Gross, Margaret
432 Windsor Street, Cambridge Massachusetts
Born Lithuania

Paplaskas (Paplauskas), Benedict
402 Pelham Street, Methuen Massachusetts
Born Lithuania

Suenlomis, Leonora
7 Walnut Street, Lawrence MAssachusetts
Born Lithuania

Zemaitis, Leocinda
1419 N. Main Avenue, Scranton Pennsylvania
Born Pennsylvania

Few people were traveling by air across the Atlantic in 1950 and it was relatively expensive. Bertha Miciunas' husnand was a factory worker so it was surprising to find her name on an airline manifest.

Any help in solving this mystery would be appreciated.

Tom
does anyone have any idea how to find out info on Katie/Karen who lived in Staripole(Marijampole) in 1880? Her brothers John (Jonas), William (Vnca) and George (Jurgis) came to US between 1880 and 1905...have most info on them since immigration...their father was a farmer who raised stallions, sister Katie was a cripple...I am afraid the Lith branch of family may have died out in old country...
Takas has a few names that may be possible to research..anyone have any idea how I may obtain the addresses for these folks?

thanks

New Ethnic Board: Lithuanian

Hello, all! I requested this board because there is a large Lithuanian community in the United States, particularly in Chicago. My godfather, Bruno Grybas, was Lithuanian, too.

I foresee this board as a place for surname notices where there is no surname board (for example, the obituary in the message after this one), and to exchange information about good Lithuanian genealogy resources, and for general genealogy-related Lithunanian inquiries.

I have NO expertise in any of these areas. :) See you on the board!

Lisa

I am researching my real last name before my grandfather changed it. It was changed during the late forties. The name was Cerankowski. My grandfather's name was John E. Cerankowski, he was born in 1919 in Sugar Notch, PA. My grandfather's brothers name was Walter Cerankowski, born in 1917 also in Sugar Notch, PA. They both changed their name to Seran. Any information on the name Cerankowski would be very helpful, and greatly appreciated.

I'm having a time of it trying to find out information on my grandparents who immigrated from Lithuania in the late 1800s. The spellings of the name in the subject line are only 4 of several spellings. Does anyone have any information on this name or something close to it where I can begin.

My grandmother headstone has "Aureleni" on it, so this is yet another spelling. Her maiden name may have been something like Casmira.

I don't even know where to begin! Can anyone help me?

Thanks so much for any help you can give!

Lithuanians in Scotland

I offered to help a friend trace her family history but unfortunately have absolutely no idea why Lithuanian families would be moving to Scotland after WW1. Could they have been persecuted? Were they Jewish? I can't find out the name before they moved to Scotland (Glasgow) only that my friend's grandmother (now in her 90s) married a Kirk in the 30s. All certificates have been destroyed by my friend's mother, who wants to "forget the past". I believe the old lady's father deserted the family in Scotland.
