Mary Elizabeth Sutherlin, Sutherland, or Southerland was said to be Cherokee and bn. in 1849. She married William Austin, bn. 1839. Her grand-daughter told me that her grandmother was buried in an "Indian Cemetery", in Shelby Co. Al. down Mallory Road in Wilsonville. She said she was taken there to see the grave when she was about 10 years old, this would be about 1932. We went there and there was no cemetery, but were told by elderly residences that there used to be one before Al. Power put in a Steam Plant and backed the water up there.
We have not been able to find out if the graves were moved.
Does anyone know how to go about finding out or have you ever heard about an Indian burial ground there ? Thanks, Linda Hood Austin
