Carolyn, I just completed doing some research on the Cherokee Mayfields and went back through the earliest Cherokee records. Two Mayfield men (both white, born in South carolina), named Jesse and Isaac Mayfield, married two Cherokee women and their descendants are the only Mayfields shown on any of the Cherokee records. Isaac's family stayed in TN for awhile, are shown on the TN 1850 & 1860 U.S. census, but came to Indian Territory before 1900. Jesse and his family came to Indian Territory, but moved to TX before 1850, and are shown on the U.S. census there. Jesse and his wife died and were buried on their plantation in TX.
