Is there anyone who has knowledge of or a reference to a site which was known as "Indian Rocks" burial grounds? This would have been around the areas of Brackney, Silver Lake, Quaker Lake or even the Sayre, PA area. Timeline would be 1700's and 1800's. Oral tradition is that the graveyard might face towards a body of water. This was some kind of spiritual tradition at death. The Native Americans in my query are the Seneca.
I found a reference at the Susquehanna Co. PA GenWeb
site which indicates that even a "half-Indian" during those times would not have been allowed to have been buried at the
cemetaries established by the Anglo settlers.
This inquiry is connected with my search for a Mandana Williams, a Seneca. I do not know if the first name is the correct spelling. Her son was Samuel Williams . He married Betsey (maiden name Hill) Williams. They established their family in Tompkins Co. NY...area towns inc. Caroline and Ithaca, NY. They were my gggrandparents.
I have located Mandana (maiden name Williams) Williams' sister, Jemima Williams.
Jemima Wiiliams married William C. Gage. He was born Sept. 20, 1813 in PA. (desc. of the William Gage line from Freetown, Mass.) and they are located in the 1880 census
of Broome County, Binghamton, NY. Yet I can't find her Seneca sister, Mandana Williams. I am descended from this sister's line which ends up in Tompkins Co., NY. When Mandana died it was imperative in the family's belief she be buried in the "Indian Rocks" burial ground which is believed to be in PA or the NY/PA border line. Her known descendants (Williams') are buried at Lakeview Cemetary, Ithaca, NY, overlooking Cayuga Lake.
Thank you for any information or direction as to how I can locate any information of the burial ground or Mandana (maiden name Williams + spouse surname of Williams). So far I haven't been able to locate her in any census.
The referenced surname of Hill family lines were from
Brackney / Silver Lake, PA.
(I have posted this query on the Broome Co., NY, Tompkins Co., NY, Susquehana Co., PA and Inter-Tribal NY sites)
Oral tradition of family is that Mandana was full Seneca. Perhaps her spouse was also or half-Anglo.
Mandana Williams Williams and sister Jemima Williams Gage's parents are supposed to be a Stephen Williams
and a Mary and/or Elizabeth Williams. This woman's maiden name is unknown if she had one.) This parental information
was given by a recently found relative who had this in her notes. No "official" documentation however.
