Simanek/Hanus in Omaha

Hi, I am stumped on where to look next for any info about my Great-grandparents, Martin I. Simanek and Lena (Eleanora) Hanus from Omaha, NE. This is what I know:
He was born in 1868 and she in 1872, both in Bohemia.
He immigrated in 1887 and she in 1891.
One of his first places of employment was working for a Vaclav Kucera at his dance hall.
He lived and worked with a John Simanek (married to Antonia Nemec) most of his life but I do not know their relationship.
In 1889 he was working as a barkeep on 13th st. and William, Omaha at a Bohemian Dance Hall and Saloon called Simanek and Kuca (or Kutcha) owned by John Simanek and Albert Kutcha. Lena Hanus is also listed as working there as a dishwasher right before they were married in 1896.
As for Lena I have very little information on her except that in 1905, when she was pregnant with her 4th child, she fell down a flight of stairs and died a few days later from "blood poisoning". I have found her grave in the Bohemian National Cemetery in Omaha. A few years later he married a Mary Dolezal also from Omaha, whom I also can't find any information on.
I would really like to know if anyone recognizes Martin and Lena and knows who their parents are, any relatives, where they came from in Bohemia and if they came with anyone else. I cannot find any of them on immigration records. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've exhausted all my resources.

Vicki from Michigan

We are assuming that the way It is heard in in english is how they are spelling it, chep and sek/sec, like wait a second. The last name is all we have, we suspect that we may need to secure his original birth certificate if we want to get the correct spelling. Of course at this point we have no idea of places where his family comes from the in the old country. Someone said it could be cepek, not sure why an s would show up in the spelling. Thanks

You're welcome Sue.
How do you pronounce this surname? Maybe knowing how it is pronounced in English I might be able to find its original CZ spelling.
for sure no CHEPSEK http://seznam.1188.cz/?utf8=%E2%9C%93&type=&...=
no CEPSEK, CEPSIK, CEPCIK, CEPCEK. If we had a location in "old country" than I might be able to figure out a surname.
Zlatica
Thank you for your reply. My husband is adopted and found the last name of Chepsek on his adoption documents. We believe that this is his father's last name. The only information that he has been told was that his mother was in Omaha, Nebraska at sometime prior to his birth but he was born in Berkley, Ca.in 1953.
We have thought that Chepsek is a Czech surname that has been from the original. Would you have any idea on a Czech spelling or does it depend on the area? Any help or suggestions are gratefully appreciated.
Thanks, Sue

Hi Yvonne,

My grandmother, Mary Ughrin (Wghrin) was born in Wellfleet, Nebraska. Her father was Michael, her mother Mary. My grandmother married a man named Williams, moved to Michigan, had a child Elizabeth, divorced and subsequently married my grandfather Floyd Ellison, with whom she had 4 children. My mother has information about her mother's immediate family, but it starts with the Nebraska family and doesn't go back to the roots in Europe. I would love to share information.

Thank you for your message. Unfortunately I do not know where Frantisek (Frank) Novotny was from. He was from a very wealthy family in Bohemia and was injured in the war and suffered greatly and died in Omaha, Nebraska at a very early age leaving his wife penniless and with a large family. His relatives in Bohemis disowned him when he married my great grandmother. She was from somewhere close to Praha I believe. It is very difficult.

He and his wife Elizabeth and 4 year old son Wenzel Wm J Nowotny sailed from Bremen on the Ship Admiral and landed in New Orleans on Nov 28, 1854. They then went north to St. Louis and started a family. My GG Grandfather was a Locksmith and a machineist in St. Louis.

Actually his name was Vaclav but he went by Wenzel and later by William only.

"The object of Conscious Evolution is to develop our adaptive evolutionary ability by tapping the "Creative Energy" of the universe. Creative energy is the basis of all living things and is what causes the acorn to grow to a tree,a caterpillar to turn into a butterfly, and causes an the infant to mature and grow into an adult. It is the life force that is ever present and ongoing. Our minds and our bodies are unique and represent our own individual creative energy or "Conscious Energy." Every living thing has its own "conscious energy" with no two conscious eneriges being exactly alike. Swoboda saw the whole universe and all of its parts, including human beings, as being interrelated and connected. He divides the human mind into two parts;[1] conscious- the rational thinking part of the mind and [2] physiological - the part of the mind that takes care of automatic functions such as breathing, the heart beat, digestion etc.Conscious Evolution gets both parts of the mind to work in harmony. Swoboda uses the energies of the brain, personality, nerves and muscles solely for one purpose, namely, for the purpose of creating organic stress upon our "conscious energy"in order to force it into yielding to each of us greater powers of mind and body that lie latently and dormantly within each of us, but have the potential to create the circumstances, thoughts, and ideas necessary for our success. It works from within and it works in reaction to the stressors through a system of interrelated physical exercise and mental dynamics. Among his students Swoboda counted US Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson and two Supreme Court Justices including Charles Evans Hughes, escape artist Harry Houdini,Ziegfeld Follies Star Anna Held, Actress Maxine Elliott, and composer Oscar Strauss as well as leaders and members of prominent families from that era. They were the first exercises used by Legendary US Olympic Weighlifting Coach and Father Of World Weightlifting Bob Hoffman who said that his father developed the best build that he had ever seen using The Swoboda Course. Bodybuilding icon Charles Atlas said, 'Everything that I know I learned from A.P. Swoboda'."

My grandfather was Lad. A. Horacek, his father was Jacob Horacek, his father was Frank C. Horacek, married to Marie Indrichovsky. Frank & Marie had many children; Anna, Jacob, Frank C., Joseph F., Marie, Katie, Stanley, Sophia, Anton E., and Christina. All but Christina were born in Vomice, Moravia, Czech. I don't have many of the names of their children etc.

We recently buried my grandmother in the cemetary in Brainard, NE. Her name was Martha B. Horacek (Horn). She was 96. There were many headstones there for all of the above mentioned relatives and their wives.

Thanks,

Brian Horacek

I was wondering if you could tell me more about his course. I am fascinated with the person who obviously inspired and led the way for Charles Atlas. Do you have his course, or have you seen it? I would love to talk with you about it. Please let me know, Darral (I am on my wife's account by the way)

Katherine Victoria Wandra Kava (Kawa)

Can anyone share information on Katherine WANDRA, daughter of Frank and Anna? She married my g-uncle Jozef Stanislaus ("Joe") KAVA (KAWA) in Central City in October, 1922 when she was about 20 years old. Joe farmed near Silver Creek and died there of heatstroke the following July 10, 1923. He is buried at Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Krakow.

Joe's KAWA siblings had settled in Omaha and didn't keep in touch with Katherine after Joe's death. I'm wondering if there may have been any children from Katherine and Joe's marriage or if she may have remarried following his death. Katherine had three brothers, I believe, so maybe some folks with WANDRA connections may still be living in Merrick County or elsewhere in Nebraska and may have some information to share.

I'm hoping someone may have a wedding picture or other picture of Katherine and Joe together or individually. I appreciate any information that will help me know Uncle Joe and his wife a bit better.

Nancy

It includes Clupnys and Stryks.

Do you know about the pool hall that August owned in Washington, KS. I think he came to this country through Galveston, TX.
