Jacob Wilkins, father of Ann and States, etc.

Although this is not a Dutch family, they were here so early that they often intermarried with Dutch settlers. I sent a post to the Dutch Colonies listserve ten years ago about Staats or States Wilkins and his connection with Ann Wilkins, wife of George Stanton. I have now proved to my satisfaction that Ann was the half sister of States Wilkins, both the children of Jacob Wilkins, a brass founder, grocer, and merchant of old New York, ca. 1760-1809 when he died. He married first Hannah Betts and then Anna Rapalje. He is listed as Ann's father in her marriage announcement in the NEW YORK ADVERTIZER, Feb 4, 1788, and as States' father in the Records of the Chancery Court NY Guardianships, Dec 5, 1810. States' mother was Ann Rapalje, an old Dutch family, and I assume there was some Staats connection through her line. See my database at
