Hello, my name is Michelle Thomas and I'm researching both side of my family.

My Mother's maiden name is Hamelinck, with her father being John. We know that it was changed from Johannes when he was 3 or 4. His father was Josephino Hamelinck. Johannes was born on December 4, 1914 and died in December of 1987. He lived in Newark, NY. He was brought to America with Jacob (believed to be his aunt and uncle).

We have some information on them, however, we are seeking the information on Josephino Hamelinck and Elodie Marie Vercruyse. Johannes was born (as far as we know) in Zeeland, Netherlands.

Warnaer Wessells m. Anne Elizabeth Masschop, NY

I'm searching for information regarding my possible 9G-grandparents, Warnaer Wessells and Anne Elizabeth Masschop, who lived in New Amsterdam (New York City) during the 1600's.

I believe that Warnaer may have migrated from Holland to New Amsterdam, but I've not found a passenger ship record for him yet, nor have I found any information identifying his parents, other than a possible name of his mother of Metja Boonen. I've found family tree postings that list his siblings as Dirk, Christiana, Henrica, Maria and Harmanus.

I have no information about Anne's family or her birthplace.

This is my possible ancestral line to Warnaer and Anne:

9G-grandparents: Warnaer m. Anne
8G-GP: Gerardus Wessells m. Unknown
7G-GP: James Vessells (Wessells) m. Elizabeth Tolley
6G-GP: James Vessells m. Temperance Tippett
5G-GP: Mary Ann Vessells m. John Bernard Seals/Seale
4G-GP: Ann Temperance Seals m. George A. Sharum
3G-GP: James Dominick Sharum m. Sabra Ann Standley
2G-GP: Ransom Asbury Sharum m. Caroline Salmon
G-GP: Otto Gettis Sharum m. Nancy Emeline Atwell
GP: Mabel May Sharum m. Don Van Reid

Not much to go on, but I'm plan to search the available records of the New Amsterdam colony to see if there are listings of Wessells names that could lead to information about Warnaer and Anne and their families.

Any information or leads about the Wessells and Masschop families or genealogy research sources for the New Amsterdam colony that could help me verify these assumptions and possible kinship would be appreciated.

Regards, John Reid
P.O.
Thomas Stevenson

Good Evening once again.......................
Thank you once again for the information you provided about Thomas Stevenson. The only court information I have regarding Thomas is a case in New Haven in 1643. You've provided me with another puzzle piece regarding another court case.
My search has been on going for over 20 years. I could never get past the date 1663, Thomas Stevens, Southampton, LI, NY. I discovered an article written for the Suffolk County Historical Society dated Spring 1995 written by Henry B Hoff and Harry Macy. They connected Thomas Stevens of Southampton to his father Thomas Stevenson from Newtown. The article provided information regarding his marriage and much confusion with another Thomas Stevenson same period who was possibly a cousin.
I've been through numerous ship lists on line finding a Thomas who arrived in Virginia and another in New England aboard the Abigail. I have Thomas starting out in Southold, LI, moving to Hempstead around 1647 then eventually to Mespeth.
I also have a copy of the book, "Thomas Stevenson and family of Greater London", written in 1903. According to Macy and Hoff the author John Stevenson has confused the family arrangement. I've been unable to find any good source material for the years 1647-1662. Rikers' "Annals of Newtown"...I only bits and pieces. I thought about joining the Holland Society but my reasons would have been purely selfish and I'm located to far from NYC to really be involved....and that's providing I would be accepted.
I did look at your book titles on Olive Tree. Yes, I would believe you have a special affection for New Netherland.
I would be interested in your opinion regarding Thomas and his many court cases. My thought is his family were possibly investors in the new world ventures. My other thought was he was an adventurer possibly a one time mercenary working for Captain Underwood. My search goes on....thanks again for your input.

Does anyone know about the history of Dutch rule in NY? I have many ancestors who were early Dutch settlers in the 1600's.
General info about Dutch Settlers

I have many Dutch descendancies and tie-ins. I have learned some backround info that might be useful.

Starting with the exploration of Henry Hudson, the Dutch settled on the Hudson River from Albany, Fort Orange, to New Amsterdam. The fur trade of beaver and otter was important cash crop. Many locations still bear the Dutch names. Harlem, Manhattan, Tappan Zee, Brooklyn (Breuckelen), Yonkers and the Bronx.

There was little reason for Dutch to settle in the new world. During the 1600s the Dutch economy was booming and there was religious tolerance in Holland. There was not a real reason for families to risk their lives to go to the new world. Most of those who went as Dutch were actually transplants that had left their motherland to escape religious persecution. They did not want to be trapped if Holland became intolerant. They could settle in Dutch settlements that had a high concentration of their own countryman. Many of the small number of actual Dutch may have been bachelors who were here for the fur trade. Some of these took Native Americans for their wives. Walloons were one of these groups of people and contributed heavily to the Dutch settlements. It is believed the term “Yankee” is of Dutch origin for little cheese. It was used as an insulting nickname for the Dutch settlers. The Dutch families that married into the Mesnard families migrated from the Upper NY area to NYC in the early 1700s. This may have been a result of dwindling fur profits and new trade possibilities in NYC. These like the NYC Mesnards were linked to the sea. I wonder if the marriages were attempts to improve business. Services were advertised by word of mouth alone. I can say all the Dutch NYC marriages that I have learned the family business the business was either trade or having something to do with the sea.
I have traced my line to a John Prince born 1742 and apparently came to New Amsterdam with his parents and sister Barbra all of whom died on the voyage over and John was taken in by the Captain. The name could have been Prinz or Printz as the census in NB Canada in 1851 list his Children as Dutch and Loyalists. If any one has any info it would be gratefully appreciated. I do have a lot of info on the Prince line from John Prince and his wife Abigal Riddle who were marrid in Shrewsbury NJ 1783 and came to NB in 1785.
Daryl Prince

Van Driesen, Waggoner Families

George Van Driesen was born about 1815 in New York. Nancy Waggoner was born about 1819, also in New York.

They had three children, all born in New York. Cynthia (born 1839), Mary, and Nelson.

The family moved to Adrian, Michigan prior to 1859, when Cynthia married Thomas Brennan of Litchfield, Illinois there.

I have not found any record of the family prior to 1859. A family photo album has unidentified photos from Syracruse, Troy, and Albany, New York Studios, so there may be a family tie to these cities.

Alternate spellings include Van Dresen, Van Dreusen, Van Dinsen, etc. I am also considering alternate spellings of Waggoner, such as Van Waggoner, Wagener, etc.

George and Nancy are my 3x great-grandparents. I would love to hear from anyone who may be related, or have information about them.

Van Strander-what was the original name?

My ancestors in the 1800's were scattered through out Orange County, NY. They seemed to have appeared from nowhere about 1827. Prior to that there are only two references that I can find on the name Van Strander. One is a listing of Electors from Ft. Ann, Washington County, NY in 1795 (lists Abram Van Strander) and a Baptismal Record of Reformed Dutch Church in Rhinebeck Flats, Dutchess County in January 1770 that lists a Pieter Van Strander and an Antje Van Strander as witnesses for the baptism of Petrus Ostrander. I am wondering if anyone out there might be able to help me with the true origin of what became Van Strander. My grandfather once told his children that the name wasn't originally Van Strander and gave them the impression that is was more of a drastic change than from something like "Ostrander". I would appreciate any help with the name or even and records known about the Van Strander families.

The Bunts or Buntje family, by oral history, left Holland and came to New York before the Am. Rev. war. I can first document my branch in Ohio ca. 1860; and the family are members of the Dutch Reformed Church & told census takers parents were b. N.Y.
I am working on the hypothesis that the Bunts family of Harmonious, Jane, Jacob & Conradt, who settled on the Hudson river are the ancestors of Harmon A. Bunts b. 1838 Ellsworth, Trumbull Co.OH. I am minus information on the intervening generations.
There is probably a connection to the later Harmon Bunts family that settles in Wisconsin.
Is anyone else working on this family?
