Any Britt families left in New York?

Am still trying to find any Irish Britt families who came over from Ireland and before that, England.
I have a Charles Britt who married a Georgia Ann Herdman in my line. They married in late 1800's, had my grandfather, Albert Britt in April of 1896.
Do these names sound familiar to anyone? Thanks and good luck in all your searches! Debbie

Francis McDermott

My six-great grandfather, Francis McDermott, came to New York sometime between 1720 and 1739. He was probably from Ireland, but he lived in a German community after coming to America. I don't know when he was born, what part of Ireland he was from, or who his parents were. Where could I find this information?

Thank you.

Irish Family Naming patterns for children???

I'm not sure this is the right forum to ask, but here goes anyway...
I have Irish Brothers Thomas & William, who both had big families in the early 1800's (11 each). The one thing I notice is they both have a son named James. It looks like William used family names when naming his children, not so much on Thomas' side. So I'm wondering if it a good bet that their father's name was James?
Daniel Feeney born circa 1784 Ireland died New York State

My 3 X great grandfather, Daniel Feeney, was born in Ireland according to Census info. I have seen his wife's tombstone which states "Elizabeth wife of Daniel Feeney d. 28 Apr 1861 ae 77y 4 m" (meaning she was born 1784), so I am assuming that Daniel was born around then also. There is no marker for him. I have nothing to go on except the Census info. I don't know how to find his family information. Any help is most welcome.
Best Always,
Carol

Mid 1800 NYC born Irish

In the 1900 census my ggrandmother, Mary Ann GAFFNEY, reported she was born 2/1954 in CT. Her mother Susan's death certificate indicated spouse's name as Patrick. The family ended up in Clinton Co by 1883 in order for Mary Ann to marry my ggrandfather.
I have searched the census information in Connecticut for 1860, 1870 and 1880 with no success for this family; I additionally hired a professional genealogist to do further searching with no luck.
However, I found a family that fits the criteria - the father was Peter (not Patrick) and he and wife were in NYC near the Bowery area in 1840 and near River Street in 1850. In 1860 in Brooklyn. In 1870 also in Brooklyn the children are enumerated without their parents with the occupation next to Mary as "Keeps young alive". Her mother Susan is also in the same district working as a servant - father is not accounted. In 1880, the father is back but mother is still missing.
All their children were born in NYC or Brooklyn.
My question - were Irish immigrants so embarassed to be associated with New York City Irish - would they have lied about where they were born? Thanks for any input.

Irish Pilgrimmage to Gross-Ile, Quebec from Montreal

Hello Everyone,

The Annual Irish Pilgrimmage to Gross-Ile, Quebec, memorial sight to thousands of Irish emigrants who perished on the journey to Canada during the Great Famine, is taking place Saturday, August 6, 2005.

The event includes the luxury coach trip to Quebec City, a 45 min. ferry ride to the island of Gross-Ile, lots of Irish history, folklore and trivia and of course admission to the memorial site. The event will not only be a chance to pay hommage to those who lost their lives on the journey to the promised land, but in the true Irish tradition, one hell of a shin-dig as well!

The event is being organized by the Montreal chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, a group that has been in existence since the middle-ages and whose modern purpose is to preserve the Irish culture and heritage in North America.

The group will meet in N.D.G. and leave EARLY on the morning of the 6th - 6:00 a.m. to be exact, so if you're not a morning person you had better be dedicated! The cost of the trip, including all that was mentioned above is $70.00 CAD. It is well worth every penny I assure you, and, all proceeds go to helping the AOH continue to be a helping and positive presence in not only the Irish community but all of Montreal. If you are interested, or for more information about the trip or the AOH please contact Victor Boyle (514) 928-7196 or INFO@AOH-MONTREAL.COM

looking for Dineen family

My great-grandfather, Patrick Dineen who was orginially from Ireland settled in NYC. Probably around 1888, he was baptised in the Parish of Ardfert and Agahdoe in 1867. His parents names were, Daniel Dineen and Catherine Riordan. They had five other children besides Patrick. Mary, born Nov 10 1870; Michael, born July 24 1872 he died, as the next child is also the same name.
Michael, born Dec17 1874; Daniel, born Sept 19 1877; and Daniel, born April 30 1880. I do not feel that Patrick was the only sibling to come to America, because when he died on Sept. 22,1961, there were a lot of Dineen relatives there, my mother said they were probably nieces and nephews of Patricks.
My ggrandmother Anna Burns was born in Albany Ny, ( I am pretty sure Albany) My ggrandfather james Doyle came there with his family in 1860, he left and he and Anna lived in Pa, It had to be before 1871, because just he and one child and Anna are in the pa census. The rest of the Doyle and Burns family remained in Ny, I believe James fathers name was Martin and his mothers Julia but this hasent been confirmed yet.I know this isent much info, but its all I have right now. Siblings Mary and Kate.
John F. Britt born 1876 to Patrick and Margaret in Brooklyn with siblings Margaret 12, Elizabeth 1.
John Britt born to Mike 34 and Mary 28 Britt in NYC with siblings Mary, Adela, John, Dennis and Thomas.
John Britt born 1878 and living with GRANDPARENTS Dennis and Margaret Britt in 19Ward NYC. I would check this one--as maybe the grandparents died? There were 3 children of Dennis and Margaret listed at that address--2 male 1 female--but it did not say if any where John's parents.
You can eliminate some of the families by tracing them to 1900 census. If they are on 1900 census they are not the family you want.

John Joseph Hanley "The Baron of Broadway"

Seeking info on this gentleman. Believe him to have made his welth in Manhattan as a bootlegger. Very popular, jovial and kind. Was told today of his particular occupation. he is the brother of my Great Great Grandmother, and I know nothing on him other that he came to the US young, and spread his wealth around in the family. He would make trips back and forth to Ireland and spread his wealth there also. In 1928, there were attempts to blackmail him according to an article written by Johnny Mee, and this was all taken care of by the Federal Court System in New York. Would love to find out if it is possible to see what this was all about. "The Baron of Broadway is a name that got "pined on him, and he took to it ...so it stayed. If you can help please email me at my new email address genealogyzone@new.rr.com. I am unable to get into Ancestry at the moment to change my email address, so I will not get a notification if you answer me on the board. Thanks! Tracy

I am looking for descendants of my great-grandfather, Robert Howard, born in 1845 in Ireland. He married Eliza, born in 1843 in Ireland. (Her maiden name was possibly McLean). Robert Howard was a cart driver. As of 1880, per the US Census, they had seven children, all born in New York. William, my grandfather, born in 1866, Eliza A. and Margaret (twins), born in 1868, Mary, born in 1871, Annie, born in 1874, Sarah, born in 1877, and Robert, born in 1880. Per the 1870 and 1880 census, they lived on the West Side of Manhattan, in the area known as Hell's Kitchen.

Please let me know if any of this information is familiar.
