Balchan,Leputa and Zarnowska names

I'm just starting research. Have found John Balchan Sr.(b. Sept 7, 1887 presumably in Poland) who married Anna Leputa(b.March 20, 1894) Anna was born in Cieklin,Poland they were married in Pennsylvania and moved to Detroit where they raised their children. I can't find anything on the Balchan family. Anna's parents Joesph Leputa and Marianne (Maria) Zarnowska were also born in Cieklin. I can't find anything on these families either.

Masto should be Maslo on Census

I have found all along in my research that my grandparents were very secretive and afraid of whatever happened in Poland before they came to the US. I just now found them in the 1910 census after searching for years. I am still looking for them on the 1920 census. I guess they finally relaxed a bit because I had no problem finding the family on the 1930 census.
On the 1910 census, they are listed as John and Petronella Masto both from Italy. Their last name should be Maslo and I know they were born in the Tarnow region of Poland(Austria at the time). I found Petronella came through Ellis Island with her nephew and they first came to Pennsylvania to her uncle's(surname Geifert) home. Is there anyone else who has run into these types of roadblocks in their research?

They lived in Poland, were categorized as Austrian, Polish, Russian, etc. What they really were is Rusyn.
HELP FINDING RECORDS IN POLAND

I just received today (1-22-05) some new information on my grandfather FRANK SIMCHICK. .The pastor at st Vladimir in edwardsville PA, was able to translate some infomation found in the funeral book for Franks funeral in 1958. FRANCIS SZYMCZYK age 78, born in WYSOKIE (diocese)WOJYWOUTSTWO (county) LOMIZYNSKA (villiage). all the information was translated in part from polish, latin, ukrainian, old church slavonic and english. I'm happy to get what I did. It goes on to say, frank was baptized in JANOWKA POLAND roman catholic church.. would anybody on the polish roots board kown of this place or the town where frank was born????. His parents were on the death certifcate I had gotten a couple years ago, ANTHONY SZYMCZYK & ANNA CZUPER both from poland. I don't know if they stayed there or came over and settled in LARKSVILLE PA, my father and uncle were both born in larksville, and three other daughters that I never knew about from the 1920 census. (frances, mary, bridget) from the paper I got today, it spelled franks father as ANTONI SIMCHAK. Franks family disappeared after the 1920 census, nobody appeared on the 1930 census. I have a wedding photo of frank and his family, no marking's as to date or place, but I think it probably was in poland. I'm hoping to find relatives of franks from poland. I know of no other relatives in larksville or edwardsville. The only uncle that could provided information, never responded to any of my letters and he passed away in oct 2004.buffalo NY. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP, I'm sure there are those of you out there who have more experience than I do, and know where to go searching for relatives. I have a copy of the letter containing the infomation and a photo of the wedding that can be attached for email, should anybody know anything and would to see it. (katz@sio.midco.net) all help will be very appreciated.

Frances appears on the 1920 census and also Frank. and my father and three other sibs. The wedding picture I have, could be frank & miinnie and not frank & blanche. If anybody knew MINNIE SIMCHICK, would appreciate any info.

Killed or exiled during Russian Revolution of 1905

My great-grandfather, Stanislaw RESLER (name written on the back of his photo), was allegedly killed or imprisoned during some conflict in Poland. Family legend says that he may have been an officer (in what? true?). My grandmother (who died in 1938) allegedly tried to find out what happened to him. He would have been born circa 1880. My grandmother's Northampton County, PA marriage record says that her mother was Francis RESLER. The only candidate that fits is a Franciszka RESLER, a widow who arrives in 1907. So I think that he was killed in Poland during the Russian Revolution of 1905. How do I proceed to find out if he was, if he was exiled [to Siberia?], or even if he may have served in the Russian forces during the Russo-Japanese War. I believe that they were from present Bobrowo, in Gminz Rzgow, Powiat Koninski, Wielkopolska.

Pichrowic; Suty; Standarska; Miller

I am trying to find out about my Polish heritage. My grandparents are all gone, and my great grandparents did not live long enough for my birth.

Here is the information that I have.
Great Great Grandmother's married name-- Teresa Standarska
I don't believe she ever came to the USA

Great Grandmother BALBINA STANDARSKA (ended up marrying a Adolph Miller) who committed suicide. She did have 2 children out of wedlock (my grandmother being one of them Josephine). Balbina came over on Ellis Island in 1899 to stay with what appears to be an aunt Francieka Pichrowic. No one knows who she is that is living today, that I know of.

-Balbina had several children with Adolph Miller: , Henry Miller, Louis Miller, Agnes Polashock

-With a man of the last name Golembeski, or Golembski. No First Name is known, he is not on birth certificates and never married Balbina. She had Mary Trupkiewicz and Josephine Suty.

Balbina's sisters are Helena and Sally. I did find Helena on Ellis Island but her name does not correspond to what is shown on the internet of EllisIsland.org. I find nothing on Sally, but do find a Franc'a that came over around the same time.. with the Standarska as a last name.
Most came from Dobryzn, Prussia.

I am looking for any additional information on the above.

My grandfather is Joseph Anthony Suty. His father Leon Suty came over the USA through Ellis Island, he was single. Anna is my great grandmother. I do not have her maiden name, nor when where how she came here. I was told she also came from Poland.

I would like to know about my Great Great Grandparents, My Great Aunt and Uncles, along with more of Leon and Anna Suty. They came from Kamewo Russia.

Any information, please email me back lifeovreilly@comcast.net

Jennifer Reilly

Looking for Russian Villages - Szranetz and Valetchish

Good day,
I am looking for any information about the following villages or towns:

Szranetz
Valetchish

Here is what I know. My husbands great-grandfather came into the US through the Port of Philadelphia in 1910. On his passenger manifest and on his petition for citizenship (filed some 5 years later) he listed Szranetz as his town of birth and Valetchish as his last residence. On his manifest, his naturalization papers and in the 1920 census he lists his birth country as Russia (and renounces allegiance to Nicholas, Emporer of all the Russias) however on the 1930 census he stated that his birth country was Poland. This could indicate that he was from the area of Russia that later became Poland or it could be a mistake on the part of the census taker.

I have checked shtetlseeker at JewishGen.org and consulted a 1915 map of Russia and Poland and can not find anything close to this name. Can anyone out there provide any insight? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Dixie Halber
dhalber@sigecom.net
I am researching my great grandmother Helena Mishechowsky (seen this way in ship records)(or Michkowsky in other religious records). Her father was Stanislaw from Karwacz, Poland (named as Karwach Gub Plock Russia in 1911). Helena was born in 1892. She had a brother named Francziszek and a sister Sophie. Sophie was born in 1888. Helena, Sophie and Frank settled in Philadelphia, PA. I cannot locate Frank afterwards. Sophie married Sahig Vahanian. Sincerely, Sandy Lovell

Spellings of Polish Names Erratic in Scranton PA Obits of 1890's

While doing research on the South Side of Scranton, Pennsylvania, for my Irish ancestors in the 1890's I've run across obituaries and marriages for Polish. Since I decided to post anything as a contribution to genealogy, I was distressed when I typed in a Polish name as spelled in the articles; the respone was no message board. I then tried Soundex but couldn't figure out what was the Polish equivalent. Sometimes the paper spelled it two ways--one day one way, the next day another. For example, Kapuski an then Kapanseuski. " Mrs. John Kapnscuski of Prospect Avenue died....mass at the Sacred Heart Polish church on Prospect Avenue and burial in Minooka." (page27 Sep 1894). Since the information is on photocopies of the pages of the microfilmed newspaper the "Scranton Republican" I feel the information should not be wasted. Mrs. Kap??? " Anoher was "Biokoski" ,marriage to a Vincent "Felazo" on 3 Oct 1894.(page 7 of that newspaper) I was glad to find this message board.

He was in the Manayunk area around 1920- as he fathered a son, my cousin. We cannot find a thing on this person. If you have any suggestions we would appreciate them. Thank you.

Zolnoski Family-Clearfield Co., PA

I am researching my husband's maternal side of the family. As with so many Polish names the spelling varies, Zolnoski, Zolnowski and Zenoski are some I have encountered. I am trying to find obituary resources in Clearfield County, specifically for families that lived in Tyler. I have placed Anthony Zolnoski in Tyler as late as 1936, but he would have been in his 60s by then. I would like to find date of death and possibly an obit. I am pretty sure I have him, his wife and children on the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census. He came from Jaworowo, Russia Poland. I think at the time that would have been in the Province of Poznan. His brother Joseph is my husband's grandfather and he also lived in Tyler for a time but moved his family to Natrona in Allegheny Co., Harrison Twp. by 1920. I would appreciate any help or suggestions on local Clearfield sources.

Connellsville, McKeesport, Export, Irwin

Am looking for family who may still be in Pennsylvania. The following PA locations are mentioned in immigration and burial records: Connellsville, McKeesport, Export and Irwin. All members of the family came from Austia/Poland region of Galicia including Gora, Zulkin, Rubcz, Kolbursowa between 1899 - 1912. I know Wojciech, Michal and Adam Skowronek worked in the Coal mines and Wojciech was buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Irwin PA, in 1915. Mary Florek Skowronek had three other children: John, Vincent and a baby daughter (possibly named Julia) who is buried next to Wojciech . Mary's sister, Katerina Florek Kozlowski and her husband Franzisek Kozlowski came over in April of 1907 following their brother Wojciech Florek (his wife Anna Skienlo) who arrived in 1902. Most of this family eventually moved to either Toledo, OH or Detroit, MI. I would appreciate contact with anyone who knows this area of PA. You could contact me directly if you wish at d.a.weber@att.net. Thanks for your help - glad to see this message board has been started!
