I'm trying to figure out a puzzle of names for one of my ancestors and her parents. Her name is Anna, a letter that was sent to her from Slovakia (in Hungarian) shows that she was born as Anna Istocsin. However, her father (who was living with her and her husband) on census records in the U.S. is listed as John Novak. On her passenger list, she lists her closest relative back home as her mother, Mária Isztoczi (not sure on the last name there, it was extremely hard to read the writing). Isztoczi seems somewhat close to Istocsin. Do you think that her father changed his last name once in America or is it possible that she took her mother's last name? If she took her mother's, could it have been an altered version (it definitely didn't say "Istocsin" on the passenger list). I would just like to know what the possibilities are for this scenario of names.
