First Name for a girl

Hello -
I'm hoping someone can give me some ideas or suggestions. My dilemma: Among the list of children born to my great grandparents, Mike (Mihaly) BENDUSZ (or BENDASZ) and Mary TIMO, is a girl named Helena. That is what is listed on the baptismal record. The year of the baptism is a year off from the birth year of my great-Aunt Elsie. I asked my mom last night if she remembers Aunt Elsie being named any other name besides Elsie, and she said she didn't think Aunt Elsie had another name. Aunt Elsie's middle name, as is known, was Julia. Could Elsie be a sort of nickname for Helena? I've looked at various websites for Slovak/Hungarian first names for girls (as well as boys) and none list Elsie as an 'English' name variation of Helena. Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Does Anyone Know?

I am researching my great-grandparents, Martin Sleziak (may also be spelled Slezjak or Slezak) and Maria (Mary) Polc.

Martin Sleziak was born on 10/03/1904 in Dobrá niva which is 20miles from Zvolen and 40miles from Banska Bystrica in Slovakia to Martin Sleziak (born 11/13/1880 in Austria/Hungary) and Anna Švarc (born 1884 in Austria/Hungary). He first came to America on May 20, 1905 when he was 6months old through Ellis Island, New York. He had traveled from Breman, Germany on a ship named Prinzess Alice with his mother Anna who was 21. They traveled to Hannibal, Missouri where Martin Sleziak, Sr. was. Martin, Jr. had three siblings, George (born 4/11/1913 in Missouri), Steven (born 1909 in Missouri), and Anna (born 1911 in Missouri). In 1930, family lived in Gary City, Indiana. Martin Sleziak died in 1934.

Maria (Mary) Polc was born 4/11/1909 in Dobrá niva, Slovakia to Martin Polc and Anna (maiden unknown at this time). She had two siblings Zuzana and Anna. Maria Polc and Martin Sleziak married on January 4, 1926 in Dobrá niva, Slovakia. They came to America on July 19, 1928 through New York. They traveled from Cherbourg, France on a ship named Mauretania with their daughter Zuzana (Susan) Sleziak (my grandmother; born 10/02/1926). They had another daughter also, Mary Sleziak (born 4/20/1929 in Pennsylvania). In 1930, the family lived in Hamtramck, Wayne, Michigan. Maria (Mary) Polc died 05/07/1999 in Pennsylvania).

Maria (Mary) Polc’s family remained in Slovakia. She corresponded with a Zuzana Kolenyova, Maria Kaputikova, and an Anna Krishbova which maybe relatives. Also, she may have relatives with the last name Bahyl/Bahylova.

A Jan Sleziak aged 45, came to America on a ship named Mount Clay from Hamburg, Germany to Ellis Island, New York on January 9, 1922 to join his brother Martin Sleziak in Missouri. This may be Martin Sleziak, Jr.’s uncle or maybe no relation.

Any information would be appreciated.

SILHAVY and JANKOVICH lines
Am researching the line descending from Prokop SILHAVY (b. 1755, died by 1811) who married Maria VLASAK. This family resided in different locations in Bohemia, now the Czech Republic, including Pecitin, Rokosky Mlyn, Golcuv Jenikov and Pohori.

My great-grandfather was Leopold SILHAVY, who along with his father was head forester on the estates of Count Bela Hadik throughout Austria-Hungary. Leopold married Matilda JANKOVICH from Sabinov, Saris. Leopold died 31 May 1900 in Sabinov, after which Matilda emigrated to Bridgeport CT with 4 of her surviving 7 children.

There are some relatives (from Aladar Silhavy, oldest son who stayed behind and became head postmaster of Budapest before WW2) still living in Budapest.

See my homepage for more information on these families. Am interested in contacting anyone researching the SILHAVY name, anytime and anyplace

Slovak Birth baptism record

Hello,
I have two related questions.
I searched the previous posts here and didn't find a reference to my questions. 1.I have a copy of a Baptism record and it was completed only up to the Domici column. However the entire record line had been canceled out with x's over each character written in.Can anyone kindly tell me what this means? Was the residence somewhere else and the priest refused to record the birth baptism in his parish? See line 11 1883
2. Also, while on the subject, I've had a very hard time trying to find a resource that translates the headers of the Birth, Marriage and Death records and have only been able to decipher some of them so far. Does anyone know of a WEB site or resource that clearly explains each heading? I really appreciate any help.Thank you!

FYI - Bratislava Archives

I recently wrote to the Archives in Bratislava for records on my great grandfather using a form I got from the Mormon Library on line. The report was 4 pages long and went back to 1735! Their records start at 1733. The cost was $69. which I thought was quite reasonable for the amount of information I received - they went back 5 generations. My bank, however, charged me $40. to do an international wire transfer, which is required in order to get your report. The 4 pages were neatly typed (in Slovak) but the cover letter was in English. After they receive your request they do the research and send you a letter stating the cost and how to pay. When you wire the money they send the report my return mail. The whole process took about 8 weeks. If you have any specific questions, feel free to email me or post here...Carol

Chana Laya died in childbirth in 1918.

Looking for any connections to this family line.
Kn'jlyna for first name?

I have come across the first name of Kn'jlyna for a female relative, my gg grandmother. Is this some sort of nickname or an abbrivation (seems too long for that) or am I misreading the handwriting? It was found in the 1869 Hungarian census for the town of Velka (Nagy) Prietz. I don't know if this was written in Hungarian or Slovak. Thank you...Carol

Hi All - after all our hard work of finding the correct village and the census film, we can't read it! We believe it is in Slovak but can't make out the hand writing to even begin a translation. I have attached a copy and hope one of you can help. Line 5 has notes and is for a 14 year old male. The web help is all for Hungarian translations so we're at a loss...thank you, Carol & Martin

Zlatica tells me the attached documents are written in Hungarian and I would very much appreciate your help in translating them - they are from the church where she was baptised. I have translated the printed headings from the Hungarian but can not read most of the handwriting! My grandmother is the last entry, #12. She was born July 28, 1886 and christened on July 29th. Her father was Janos Biros and her mother was Zuzanna Remeta - I do not know why Marticek has been added to the name. They were Lutheran and from Abrahamfalu (called at that time) but I can't read anything else. If you can look them over, I would be most grateful....Carol

I'm having a problem finding my village in the 1869 census. It is Abrahamfalu (Abrahamovce) in Saros megye but all I can find is Abrahamfalu in Szepes megye, which is a different county from what I understand. Or would it be included there because the counties are next to each other? Or is it possible my village simply isn't included in Saros for some reason? Thanks...Carol

My grandmother's name was Kanishock, Kanishak, Kanoshock, Kanoshak etc....(it was spelled so many ways I am dizzy)

Her father was listed on the 1920 census as born in Hungary and speaking Slovene. But on the 1930 census as born in Austria, Hungary, Czech and being Slovak.

This seem like contradictions but I am not entirely sure. He attended the Greek Catholic Church. Would this help to narrow things down any?

How would this be spelled originally, any guesses?

Finally, I am not finding any immigration paperwork.

I have found the village my grandfather came from, Nagy Priterzsd in Myitra Megye, Szenicz Jaras. His name was Martin Mudroch and his father, Stefan Mudroch was also from Priterzsd so there must be records but I have no idea how to go about getting them. They were Lutherans and, according to the 1877 Dvorzsak Gazetteer, there were 849 Lutherans there, with both AG emboldened and Dunaninnen - which I think is similar to a diocese. Is it possible to contact the church for old records? Are there any form letters on the web as I don't speak any of these languages? Any help will be greatly appreciated...thank you...Carol

I grew up in Indianapolis. We had a large ethnic area and it was known as "Hunky town". Please do not be offended. No one there thought it was offensive and many, many of my friend lived there. There was "bar" that served "hunky stew"....it was wonderful. People came from all over town to eat it. From my recollection is was mainly beef and (banana) peppers and other "good stuf" -- no veggies. I have tried again and again to recreate it and it doesn't taste correct. Can someone tell me how to make it? It was pretty hot and we dipped freshly made bread into it. Thank you.

SURNAMES: KOTASEK, GOSKE

I am looking for my family from my fathers' side. My father's name was Lawrence Kotasek and my mother's name is Kathrene Papalas. His father's name was Stephen Kotasek. He came over from Czechoslovakia (Slovenia). I know that there were different names back then but unfortunately this is all I know. He was born abt. 1896, and died on 20 Sept. 1960 in Youngstown, OH. He arrived in the USA abt.1906 and was a Steel Worker. He married Susan Goske who was born in Pennsylvania on 27 July 1900. Susan's parents also came over from Czechoslovakia, but I have no other information on their names or what part. Stephen's dad's name was John Kotasek and he was born abt. 1874 in Slovenia. I believe his wife's name was Mary, but can't find too much on her and maiden name is unavailable. Most of the family is deceased now and I have no one to talk to to get anymore information. If anyone has information on either of these surnames I would love to hear from you.

Slovak name ending

On Ellis Island records my husband's g/fa is listed as Rudolf Sislak, whereas his mother listed as nearest relative in Slovakia is listed as Sislakova. Does anyone know the meaning of "ova" on the end of her name. We were under the impression Sislak was the original name. Also, does anyone know what Sislak means? Zthanks for any help.

According the Ellis Island database my great-grandmother Ilonna Szmik Kepics emigrated in 1905 to Penn. from a village called J.Remete in Hungary. However, our family is Slovak and Slovakia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, I thought I'd be able to find the name of the village on a map of present day Slovakia but am having trouble locating it.
Can anyone help? :)

Thanks!

Toney James, Jamos, Dimitrios, Dimitrakopoulos, Dimitras, Dimitroff, Demetroff, Kalza Calza

I am searching for information on my great grandfather Toney James . I'm not sure that James was his last name before he
came to America. I have heard that it was James, or possibly Jamos, Dimitrios, Dimitrakopoulos, Dimitras, Dimitroff, Demetroff, or even Kalza or Calza.
All I know is that he was born in Macedonia in sometime between 1877-1887. He moved to America to Greene
County, Indiana and worked on the railroad, married a woman named Goldie Bingham, and died in Greene County in 1980. I have been told that he later went back to bring his sister to
America. Her name was possibly Anna and she may have lived in Chicago?? I don't know anything about her. On his marriage certificate he stated that his parents names were Jim and Maggie. On some census records he has put that he was born in Greece, most records say Macedonia, but another one says Turkey. His census records also say that he was naturalized, but I can't find documentation of that, or any immigration records.
I would greatly appreciate any information on him, my distant relatives, or anything about the last name James
Thanks,
Paul James

Julius Peter Skvarenina, d Chicago 1933

I am looking for information on Skvarenina's.

My grandfather was Julius Peter Skvarenina who I am led to believe was born in Slovakia, died Chicago 1933. He was one of eight brothers and married Anna Novak, one of eight sisters in Chicago.

My father was named Stephen Martin Andrew. His middle names were supposed to be uncles; i.e., his fathers brothers.

There is a Martin Skvarenina in the SSDI, born 1890 in Czechoslovakia, died 1970 in Prague. But Soc Sec # was issued in Chicago in the late 1930's. His father is listed as Matej Skvarenina

If anyone has information concerning any of these people or how the Skvarenina's all tie together I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks,

Tim

tskvaren@hotmail.com

First of all, my name is Georgia Golian, not Susan Renfro. I have no Idea how that got on the web like that. Searching for any Golians, hustavas, Laliks, tusims, that came to america in early 1900's. Grandfather of my husband was Andrew Golian, born about 1873-1874. Wife Dora was born much earlier-1852?? She came from near Hrinova, Slovakia. They went to Penn. first, then to Missouri. Dora was married to Jan-Lalik-Tusim first, and had several children by him. We recently found some of those distant relatives in Slovakia. Not much on the Golians. But since they carried 2 last names a long time ago, we think that Golian and Hustava were the same family.Grandfather went by Andrew Golian. Grandmothers maiden name was Michalikova from near Hrinova. Jagoda is another name we are searching for. Dora and Andrew had 3 sons, Emerish, Martin and Andrew. Any help appreciated. Thank you Georgia Golian--ggolian@webtv.net

Krompachy (Krompach) - Szepes County

I am trying to locate the Kepko family which originated from the present-day Slovakian town of Krompachy. I am led to believe that Krompachy is the old Szepes County/Upper Hungarian town of Krompach (or Korompa). Can anyone help with locating the correct LDS microfilm for the 1869 Hungarian census? Many thanks.

Richard Kepko

Masko Brothers from Stropkov, 1903

Can anyone help with a "rock and a hard place" problem? I had thought my Masko troubles would be over when the Ellis Island record site was up and running, but the names were so altered that the search engine is just not picking them up. Two brothers, Frank and Andrew, arrived from Slovakia on board a ship of the North German Lloyd line and were processed through Ellis Island Oct. 12, 1903. I've been told that would narrow it down to the Chemnitz or the Kaiser Wilhelm. What I need now is a name -- ANY name -- from the passenger manifests of both ships arriving about October 12. With a name, I can then load the passenger list, and search line by line -- less time consuming and painstaking than the fruitless searches I've entered so far. Can anyone "loan" me an ancestor?
