My family legend is one that my uncles and grandfather went to their grave believing. I have found that it was quite untrue and probably was a story that Grandpa's older brothers told him as a joke. Grandpa was told that his father was a basket baby and left on the porch of the family that raised him. This is a complete falsehood. Grandpa's father was the legitimate son of his parents, and I have affidavits signed for Civil War pension papers by the women that attended his birth.
Another cousin was told that this same great-grandfather was the son of a river boat captain and a minister. Also a complete falsehood.
What must have been true is someone in the family should have been a fiction writer and missed his calling!
