Civil War Pensions--which packet?

Now that the price has gone up for war records, I find myself wondering if the $75 full pension packet will be worth it. I see they have a pension packet for only $25 that gives you between 8-10 pages of genealogical value. I wonder just what I would be missing if I went the cheaper route? The pension I would be recieving is a widows pension applied for in 1920. Also the soldier i am looking at served 2 terms--one in the infantry and one in the cavelry.

As an afterthought--I see if you do order the $25 packet they will NOT tell you how many more pages there are. They will only say if there are more or not. I think with the price they are demanding now, they could at least say how many pages there are.

Any thoughts?

NARA Reproduction Fee Change for Civil War Pension files

This is the 2nd notice from other researchers. I did check out some of the proposed changes in price. In general the increases were as they should be. Read on about the pension records.

kemis

Re: The change from $37 to $125 reproduction fee for full Civil War pension
records; a 296% increase (36 CFR 1258 from the Federal Register, v. 72, no.
37, 2/26/07, p. 8327)

I¹ve just left my ³2 cents² at the regulations.gov website (must be done by April 27) and suggest that everyone else do so too. They¹ve just reversed what we get for our money....used to be we paid $37 for a file whether it
was 50 pages or 200 pages. A good deal if you had a file that was 200 pages (of the 10 files I¹ve ordered over the years, only 2 fit this category; the other 8 were under 50 pages). Now we will be paying the larger file cost when we may only get a 25 page file!

I told them that they should be charging a price per page not a flat fee...pay for what you get....comments?

Go to: http://www.regulations.gov
In the search box, type "NARA Reproduction Fees." The Proposed Rules and the Rules will come up.
You can click on the text to read them.
Then click on the yellow emblem by the first line - Proposed Rules - and fill out your name, zip code, etc.,
and make your comment.

BTW, I¹ve also sent e-mails to all my Senators & House Reps...it¹s easy to do:
The House of Representatives websites with e-mail contacts are listed at:
http://www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW_by_State.shtml#co
The Senate website with e-mail contact are listed at:
http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_c...

Also: Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter (www.eogn.com) has lots of interesting comments about this topic.
I am trying to fill out the forms to requesst the pension records for several of my ancestors. This may be a dumb question, but in the beginning of the form, one of the boxes you must answer concerns whether the person's service was Volunteer or Regular.
How would I know? I'm afraid if I take a guess and am wrong it will result in my not getting the records. I wonder whether it's something as simple as that if it was Volunteer, the unit listed on the index would have "volunteer" in it. As opposed to something like, Company D, 14th H.A. Regiment...........
Anyone know for sure?
Thanks!

Hi ~

Does anyone know how I could obtain a copy of a letter my grandfather wrote to FDR? He wrote it in the early 40s, an idea he had for unemployment compensation. The idea apparently was good enough for FDR to send a couple of government men to my grandfather and try to convince him to move to DC.

Meanwhile, I wrote NARA months and months ago, no response. I also tried the FDR Library, they couldn't help without a better idea of the date of the letter (which I don't have).

I had really hoped to obtain a copy to pass on to his descendents now and in the future.

Thanks.
Teressa

Ancestor (Charles Hutchinson MORELAND) is listed on the 1900 Federal Census with other support personnel for (10th) cavalry unit stationed in Cuba. He was listed as a "packer" (?) - apparently not considered enlisted personnel - since he was on the "civilian" list along with the farrier, the cook, the veterinarian, etc. What type of employment records might be on record for such an individual? Also, he married while in Cuba, returning to the U.S. sometime around the time of his wife's death (she either died IN Cuba or during the journey back to the U.S.). Would any kind of passport information be likely to exist for his infant daughter?
Does anyone know if there is anywhere I can write to obtain records of Visas of Polish (Galicy) Immigrants returning to Poland between 1908 and 1912? My grandmother returned to Poland twice after her first arrival in NYC. I cannot find her original arrival information (between 1897-1900). Since I have found her second and third arrivals on the Ellis Island database, I was hoping that she had to apply for a Visa to leave America and return to Poland. I was also hoping that that Visa may list her initial arrival inforamtion & date.
How to Search for Navy Records

Hi! I am trying to locate my grandfather's Navy service record. My first request was returned to me because they needed his service ID number which I cannot locate. It's become a Catch-22. He died at Bethesday Naval Hospital in 1954 and the hospital no longer has his records, which might have contained the ID number. Part of the problem is that my grandfather seems to have used various middle initials through the years. Any advice?
