Can one be deported from US and return?

Two of my great uncles born in 1890s in Sicily came to US. One became a citizen in 1931, the other applied for citizenship in 1927 but I'm not sure yet if he became a citizen. Relatives of my father's generation have told me both uncles were deported. Yet, I know the first one had 8 kids here and died in CA. The second one, I'm told was deported TWICE. He died in Sicily in 1967. My dad said the second one made "bathtub gin" so I would guess it had something to do with prohibition.
If someone becomes a citizen of the US, can they still be deported? If they are deported, can they legally return to the US? Could someone really be deported twice?
Hope these are not silly questions. I just never thought about it before.
Thank you.
