My GGGrandfather, Paul Holz was naturalized in 1894. I found him in the naturalization petion index, so I know he was naturalized in Brooklyn, NY. I called the courthouse and they said they no longer have those records. Do they still and I just talked to someone who doesn't know what they're talking about? Can anyone help me find the actual records???

Naturalizations in Passaic County, New Jersey now online

www.records.passaiccountynj.org
is the website for naturalizations for Passaic County, New Jersey. There are both Declarations of Intent to become a citizen, and naturalization papers, where either or both exist in the county clerk's files. I have just learned of this and have finally found the 1918 Declaration of Intent for my German Great Grandfather. The information asked for on the form for this time period is quite detailed. It includes birth place and date, ports of departure and arrival, date of birth, name of spouse and spouse's birth place, and a physical description of the applicant. Oh, also the name of the ship and the arrival date!
Only problem at this instant is that I can only see the image of the document using a Windows machine. My new Mac doesn't show the document image, only the search results. I've reported the problem and the clerk's office is working on it. Also told them how thankful I was that they had made this info available online.
Check out the Help section for tips on searching. No wild cards can be used when trying to catch variant spellings of a name. However, if you can enter the first several letters of the name, you will get back all names starting with those letters. This works for both first and last names. If you have a lot of names to go through, notice that the default sort seems to be the year filed. But if you click on the heading "Country", it will sort on that.

1858 Rochester NY intent to become US citizen

My relative John Hesler declared his intent to become a citizen on October 18, 1858 in Rochester NY. His previous "ruler" was the King of Norway. He moved to the Gold Country of California where he is found in Hornitos in the 1860 US census and then in Mariposa in 1870. Where can I find a copy of this intent record as it may contain what city in NOrway he came from. I am trying to validate that he is a person born in SKien Norway in 1833.

Thanks
Steve Heimerle

is then found

Can one be deported from US and return?

Two of my great uncles born in 1890s in Sicily came to US. One became a citizen in 1931, the other applied for citizenship in 1927 but I'm not sure yet if he became a citizen. Relatives of my father's generation have told me both uncles were deported. Yet, I know the first one had 8 kids here and died in CA. The second one, I'm told was deported TWICE. He died in Sicily in 1967. My dad said the second one made "bathtub gin" so I would guess it had something to do with prohibition.
If someone becomes a citizen of the US, can they still be deported? If they are deported, can they legally return to the US? Could someone really be deported twice?
Hope these are not silly questions. I just never thought about it before.
Thank you.

Hello!

Does anyone know where I might find information about a 1910 naturalization which I believe occurred in Hartford Co, CT?

Francois-Xavier ARBOUR (aka Joseph-Xavier ARBOUR or Henry ARBOUR) lived in Hartford Co, CT -- in Collinsville, Avon, and New Britain -- from at least 1882 through 1936. According to the 1920 Census, he was naturalized in 1910.

Thanks for your help!

I have an ancestor who came to America from Ireland in 1881. He lived in Essex County, Nj from then until 1887, during which time he was married.

He and his family then moved to Pennsylvania, where they permanently settled in Johnstown, Cambria County, Pa. I haven't been able to glean much info on this on any of the censuses I have for him. Should I be looking for declarations in NJ or PA? Both? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Seeking Naturalization records from 1866

I am searching for the naturalization records for my ancestor. He came to the U.S. in 1859 and, according to an index at my local Family History Center, he was naturalized in October 1866 at the local county court in Cattaraugus County, New York. Trouble is, after contacting the county, they have no record of him. I'd like to pursue his records through the federal government but have found the NARA site quite daunting. Can someone advise as to how and where to request such records?

Thank you very much.

Naturalization in Hawaii

My husband's grandfather, James Arnold (Aurndel, Portuguese spelling -- b. 1865, England; d. 1926, California)came from England to Hawaii about 1884. All three census records 1900, 1910 and 1920 indicate he was Naturalized in 1886 but the ULUKAU indexes in Hawaii for Naturalization do not list him. In 1900 he is listed in the 1900 Census of Military and Armed Services in Binan, Philippines - wouldn't he have had to become a citizen to be in our armed services. I believe I read somewhere that if a person was a Hawaii citizen at a particular time, they were automatically considered a citizen of the U.S. (not clear on what I read). I haven't attempted to locate a military record - that is my next task. Does anyone have a suggestion? Appreciate it. Thanks, k

Naturalization and Ship Records

I am trying to find Naturliaztion Records for Emile Gerard.
He arrived in 1919 on the SS Shoshone (US Military ship) in Philadelphia (France was native country).
1920 Census - in Ann Arundel, MD with an adopted family( 16 years)
1930 Census - in Reading, PA (26 years).
1931 Marriage - living in Ephrata PA prior to marriage.

On his ship record there is a stamped date (Apr 27 1928) and a number that appears to be handwritten by a different person. Could that be a clue to his Naturalization date? He was definitely a citizen prior to 1931. It is my understanding that naturalizations took place in the local courthouse. Is there any sort of national index? If not, I am going to have to search 3 different counties in 2 states-- so I want to be sure there are not any shortcuts first :)

Thanks for your time
Michelle
wilcoxrph@gmail.com

Naturalization West Virginia

I've hit a brick wall trying to locate my great-grandfather's
declaration of intent. He was William Boyle, he married
Margaret Muldoon in Wheeling, West Virginia on Jan.
2, 1856. He bought land in Pease Township, Belmont
County, Ohio in 1861. They attended the Catholic cathedral
in Wheeling even after buying the land across the river
in Ohio. Records indicate that he was a machinist.
His parents were Neal and Margaret Boyle. Using his
age given at marriage, I've been working with a birth year
of 1830, give or take a year. He died in Missouri prior to
the 1880 census, so I can't use the information from it
to fix his arrival more securely in time. We'd really like
to know where he came from in Ireland if at all possible.
Does anyone have suggestions? Thanks.

I sent off to NJ State Archives for some family info and they in turn searched the NJ Supreme Court & Burlington County Court, Clerks Office for Naturalization records. The two attachments are the two pages (p. 226-227) that I received back. The surnames range from Paladine thru Prindble.
Nothing to do with my family though.
Good Luck,
Tom

A man arrives in USA June of 1867, applies to become a citizen in Oct of 1868 and on the 1900 census there is "P" in the column under Naturalization which I assume means he never applied for his second papers. When he arrived in this country his son was 3 years old.
Did this son have to go through the Naturalization process when he became 21?
Did any of his sons born in this country after June of 1867 have to go through the Naturalization process?

Francesconi

My husband's ancestor (Guido Francesconi b. 1844, d. 1898 Brooklyn, NY) lists "king of Portugal" as his former nationality on his NY petition for naturalization. Because of the way the words are written, it almost looks like "Portugal" was written first and "king of" was added as an afterthought. We always thought he was from Italy. He still may have been and lived in Portugal. He was a captain of a ship, or had a ship of his own or something like that, apparently successful if tradition can be believed, maybe he sailed between Portugal and Genoa, Italy, perhaps to the U.S. as well. His wife and all but one child were born in Italy and immigrated in 1884 from Italy. We don't have info on when Guido immigrated.
My guess is that business went bad, the long distance marriage was tiresome and they decided to try their luck in the US. In the US, Guido set up business in NYC as an importer/exporter. Can someone please give me some tips as to research in Portugal? I am not bilingual and don't know where to begin as Portuguese info is not as available as other nationalities. I would like also to find information on the shipping link as it could really answer many questions. Was there a Portuguese or Italian ship's registry in the 1800s?

HELP-suggestions for obtaining naturalization papers

I am currently in the process of obtaining death certificates of my great great grandparents and have come across a delicate problem that I would appreciate any suggestions/help solving. In order to obtain naturalization certificates and petition for naturalization, I must prove through I am a direct descendant by using my great great grandparents death certificate plus birth certificates leading to me. My problem with this is that I am not comfortable asking my elderly grandmother for a copy of her birth certificate as she gets somewhat confused at times and may not understand why I am seeking this information. She has been sick lately and I do not want to cause her anymore stress. I am unable to obtain a copy of this on my own as due to Michigan law, it is not allowed. I am wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem and am open to any suggestions. Can anyone thing of a way to get around this using any other documentation? Thank you.

This summer (Late June) I sent in three G639 forms to INS, one for each of three of my ancestors. I still have not received any response for the other two requests.

I wanted to find out if anyone knew what sort of response time I should expect for a "request on the simple track."
And when I should use the control numbers to inquire about these outstanding requests.

Thanks for your input.

Italian-American Citizenship and U.S. Naturalization Process

I am exploring the possibility of attaining Italian citizenship based on my maternal grandparents birth in Italy in the early 1900's. In researching my maternal grandfather's American naturalization process, I am trying to determine if he was naturalized before or after my mother's birth. If he was naturalized before her birth I cannot get citzenship. If he was naturalized AFTER her birth, I can proceed.

My mother was born in 1929. According to the 1930 Census, my grandfather had filed his "first papers" toward Naturalization which would have been his Declaration of Intention. But he was not fully naturlized until after that point.

Would I still qualify for Italian Citizenship if he wasn't fully naturalized at her birth but had started the process?

Grazie!

Richard Heffernan

I am applying for my citizenship, I have completed the N-400 form but I am stuck on 3 questions....here is my status...I hold a green card through marriage, my wife became a US Citizen sometimes in 1995 and she was married before from an American citizen...my wife and I are seperated now and I am filling for a divorce and she's missing and I can't find her....on the form it asks what date she became a citizen, also what date was she married the first time....I don't know the answer to either question and I have no documents to find the answers....my third question is a little more complicated it concerns the selective services....when I entered the US I entered on a Tourist Visa...lawful nonimmigrant but 6 months after my visa expired I was out of status I was 22 at the time and I never registered with selective services... now do I need a status information letter?
Naturalization & Social Security

Grandfather, Giuseppe Roppo, immigrated in 1903. Grandmother, Grazia Caschetta, immigrated in 1907. As late as the 1930 Census, he still responded as having filed his first papers(Pa). She still responded as being an Alien (Al). He died in early 1950s. She died in late 1970s. They both had Social Security numbers. My question: Was a person required to be Naturalized before he/she could register for and ultimately obtain Social Security benefits? Thank you.

Hi Everyone

I'm working on a huge set of records for my new site
NaturalizationRecords.com at

http://naturalizationrecords.com/

The set of records are Declarations of Intent in New York
1827- 1895, from the Justice's Court, Albany, New York

Declarations of Intent are a first step towards finding an
ancestor's immigration year, and from there a ships
passenger list.

The Index to Book 2 & 3 is being put online as it is
transcribed. A volunteer is helping me with this and she
deserves a very big "Thank you!" for working so hard.

More names will follow as time permits. For now, you can
enjoy the index to Surnames for years 1832-1836 which begins
at

http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/nyintent_a1833.shtml

You can also start at the Online Records for New York found
at

http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/ny_onlinedb.shtml

Lorine
Where would I find naturalization records for 1876? My ancestor; William Henry Clukas became a US citizen in Oct. 1876 at 45 years of age. He immigrated from New Brunswick Canada. He either came through Boston MA or Maine.

If he came thru Portland Maine, and became a US Citizen from that state, where would these records be held?

If he came thru Boston and came a US Citizen from that state, where would these records be held?

Thank you for any help that can be given.

Regards,

Fawn Unger
fawniesrose@attbi.com

Naturalization by Act of Congress, Chicago IL

I'm interested in obtaining naturalization documentation for an ancestor who lived in Chicago, IL, in the late 1800s. In the voter registration rolls (both 1890 and 1892), it is recorded that he was naturalized, but no court or year was identified, only a "yes" answer in the column "By Act of Congress."

My ancestor was born in Scotland, immigrated first to Nova Scotia, and then to Chicago.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of naturalization, or know how I could go about getting information relating to it? Thank you for any help.

I am very new to research, but came across the INS website a couple of days ago. Supposedly, they can retrieve A-Files (registration of aliens during WWI and WWII, and all subsequent legal papers) and C-Files (all legal papers relating to naturalization and new citizenship) with only a name, date, and place of birth. They have access to records from every state and court, small local courts as well as federal. I have just sent for the imformation I am looking for, so I don't know if this is really as easy as it sounds, but it is worth a try. I don't have the site adress, but all I did was search under naturalization.

Hi -

I'm trying to obtain naturalization records on my grandfather, and I have downloaded the form G-639 to request the records. There is a place that indicates if the person is deceased, I must provide proof of death. The problem I have is that it also says you can only access someone's records with their permission. There is no separate instruction as to who can request the information of a deceased individual.

If anyone knows how this works, I would really appreciate your help! I can have my grandmother, his wife, sign the form, but I don't know if that's acceptable...

Thanks!

HELP-obtaining naturalization papers

I am fairly new to genealogy and I am currently in the process of obtaining death certificates of my great great grandparents and have come across a delicate problem that I would appreciate any suggestions/help solving. In order to obtain naturalization certificates and petition for naturalization, I must prove through I am a direct descendant by using my great great grandparents death certificate plus birth certificates leading to me. My problem with this is that I am not
comfortable asking my elderly grandmother for a copy of her birth certificate as she gets somewhat confused at times and may not understand why I am seeking this information. She has been sick lately and I do not want to cause her anymore stress. I am unable to obtain a copy of this on my own as due to Michigan law, it is not allowed. I am wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem and am open to
any suggestions. Can anyone thing of a way to get around this using any other documentation? Can a birth announcement be used in place of a birth certificate?

Also I was going to start my quest for naturalization records directally with the INS, but have found others searching at a local court level. Would I be further ahead to proceed with the INS or try to determine what court my ancestors began? And must I obtain a Naturalization certificate before I can obtain a petition for Naturalization? Must I have Form G-639 notarized?
Thank you.

Naturalized with parents?

Would my grandfather would have been automatically naturalized when his parents were? And if so, how can I find the records? He came to the U.S. at 1 year old from Italy - Italian dual citizenship specifies that he must have been naturalized after my mother's birth for me to obtain citizenship, but I don't know if I can get around that since he wouldn't have exactly done so voluntarily. ??

Thanks,
Jenefer

I am not sure how naturalization works. Is it possible to obtain a copy of my gggrandfathers naturalization papers or papers he filled out to get his naturalization? He was an immigrant from Nova Scotia and his obituary says he was naturalized in Storey County,Nevada in 1873. Where would I look to find this information? I don't know where in Nova Scotia he came from, and was hoping to find that out through investigating his naturalization. Thank you, Jan

info on records

I just received my great grandfather's naturaliztion record yesterday. I was hoping it would lead me to his parents, provide info about children of his that died at young ages, etc. However, all that I have is a 3 page document that appears to be the second part of the process. I am new to the naturalization research portion of this genealogy trek, so I don't know much. However, isn't there another part of the process that might provide more genealogical info? If so, can anyone direct me to where I might find it?

Also, fortunately the newly acquired record does provide the names of the two witnesses. Were there any typical individuals people used as witnesses in these proceedings (i.e., relatives?)? Any insight would be helpful. Thanks.

British or American citizen?

Hello to all,

I'm currently researching an area I'm unfamiliar with. Can you help? My English ancestor sailed to America in 1837. In 1839 he married an American woman and they had a child. Around 1842 they sailed back to England. All passenger records before approx. 1900 to England were destroyed by order of the board which has left me only one place to look - passport applications. My understanding is, passports were given to American citizens ONLY and from what I've read about the laws back then...a woman marrying an Englishman therefor becomes an English citizen (even though they are living in America). Do I have that right, and if so....what then becomes of the child? Did the law apply to the child as well?

I would like to research the passport applications but really need to know this first.

With kind regards and thank you for any help you can provide.
Fiona Price

I have a quick question. Please excuse me if this has been asked and answered in the past. In researching my grandfather, who emigrated to the US from Poland in 1900-1901, I noted that on the 1920 Federal Census he was listed as having filed his "first papers." However, on the 1925 New York State Census he is still listed as an "alien" (he died in 1928).

My question: should there be record (either at the local courthouse or possibly at INS) of his Declaration of Intent, regardless of whether he eventually became a citizen?

Any advice is appreciated!

Patrick Weklar

I haven't looked for Naturalization Records before, so I have a question before I start looking. Did immigrants have to be naturalized? My GGG-grandfather came to America in 1828. Was there a law that said he had to swear an oath to America? If they didn't, what percent of the immigrants did get naturalized?

Carin

My gr-uncle came to the US from the Netherlands, most likely in 1923 as this is when his daughter in the Netherlands was born. In 1925 he married in Australia, he entered Australia in March 1924. We later found out he had been a naturalized American. How could he have been naturalized in only one year????? Would he have become an American if he had married an American woman?

My gggrandfather filed a Declaration of Intent in Minnesota in 1857; other than renouncing his country and the approximate date of his arrival (1850), there really isn't any other information. Is this typical? I was hoping for more information, such as the port he arrived at, the name of the ship, etc.Any info would be appreciated.Thanks.

New Jersey/New York naturalization records

I need help! My gg grandfather Robert Hodson (born in England) and his wife Alice Daring (born in Ireland), came to America sometime prior (probably within 10 years prior)to 1851. Since they were in Newark by 1851 I know it is a good bet that they arrived at Ellis Island. One problem I have is that the name was sometimes misspelled as Hudson. I have been unable to find immigration records (because I don't know exactly when or under which spelling)for them so I can't trace them back to Europe. Can anyone help? How do I go about finding their naturalization papers with such limited information and without the ability to travel to New York?

Gust Chrisoules emmigrated to the US

We are trying to find information out on my husbands grandfather but we are not getting anywhere. Gust Chrisoules emmigrated to the US in 1912 to Ellis Island and then on to Kokomo Indiana. The problem we are having is that when he came to the US his name had been changed for some reason. The spelling in my mother in-laws birth cert. says his name is Chrisoules while hers is spelled Chrisoul. The other reason we are running into a problem is that all of his papers were stolen including naturalization, pass port, and birth cert. The only good thing is that he was able to obtain a SS# but even that is not coming up in any data bank. My sister in-law called the Greece Embassy but has been given the run around and we have ran his name through Ellis Island but cant find his name on any of the ships manifest. Any ideals on where we can look next? We have hit just about every genealogy site we can find and have found no information. He even served in the US Army in Texas but we can not find any documentation of this man anywhere! We know he DID exsist as he had a wife and two daughters !! Please give suggestion!! Thank You Karen White
