I am searching for information about a chair I own. It has a small tag that reads "Guthridge Chair, Pat'd. July 30, 1901, Mfd. by F.M. Guthridge". I would like to find the patent in order to see the purpose and use for this chair. With the information I have, how do I go about searching for the patent number?

I think I'll head down to Los Angeles central library and check out the ledgers you mention! I've been searching for patents of an old inventor and spent about two hours going through every patent in the "Current US Classification" yesterday! Being able to search by name will save me eons.

How to find old patents

i started this list because i have been searching old patents and wanted to share what i knew. i have been looking at hundreds of thousands of people filing patents and realizing they all have descendents. so i wanted to share what i have learned.

patents after 1976 are on the web, searchable many ways. before 1976 it gets interesting.

if you have the patent number you can search old patents and if you download a viewer from the patent office you can see them. certain libraries, including the los angeles downtown branch, have ledgers of all patents starting in 1790 or so. they are easily searched by inventor name and date. one enormous ledger for each year. you get the patent number from the ledger and then search on line.

it is possible that there will soon be CD's searchable by name but it isn't working yet. i have been searching my own line, full of mad inventors, and for antique farm machinery for a cousin. that was hard. so if anyone needs help doing this i will be glad to share whatever i can.

As a patent secretary for over 4 years I have found there are a number of ways to find patents, even very old ones. The USPTO website is available with drawings now, but I don't know how far back it dates. For a fee, there is also MicroPatent USA (micropatent.com). If you know what you are looking for you can usually get them for aprox. 4.95 and download them to your PC. If you are unsure of the information the USPTO (uspto.gov) is the best place as there is no fee.

Diane,
I have one of the orginal patent labels that had belonged to my grandfather, but I don't know any of the history on it. It is a label for an Asthma Remedy that was sold through the mail, by mail order. This medicine was sold from Fallon, Nevada from where my grandparents, my father and his 8 sibbling lived. This Asthma label has my grandfather written signature at the top of the label; H.E. Beaudreau. Then it has a trademark No.230,594, then under that is the title,ASTHMA REMEDY, and then written under that is the directions- Adult measure of use and Childrens measure of use. Then under that is written Benficial for all Broncial troubles. None genuine unless bearing above trade mark.
After my grandfather died at a early age of 49, then my grandmother had added her full name printed on these labels as follows;
Lucinda F. Beaudreau -
Fallon, Nevada, and then she for a while continued to sell this remedy in the same fashion as my grandfather did. Can you please help direct me where I might find the history of my grandfathers medicine? I will be deeply grateful. Thank you.
Sincerely, Juanita
