Hi there,

Without seeing the whole coat of arms, it's difficfult to ascertain their source. Sometimes the style of the image gives a clue, but with half of it missing, it's almost impossible to get any definite facts. However, for registerted coats of arms in Britain, the motto is ascribed to the STACPOOLE surname.

In Burke's General Armory, the arms of STACPOOLE (Eden Vale, co.Clare) are Argent a Lion rampant Gules which is what I see on the sinister side of these arms. This family also has the same motto. Unfortunately, other than the country of Switzerland, I can't identify the dexter arms. Perhaps someone else can identify them.

Where is the upper part of the shield? Was there anything else above the cross or the Lion?

The arms registered in the name of PERCHARD (Jersey/Guernsey) are Argent five Lozenges cojoined in fess Sable, and they have a French motto.

I couldn't find any applicable arms for the surnames of Rattray or Summers that are in any way similar to the half image that you provided.

The Scallop Shell is used by many families as their crest, but none of those are of the names that you mention. It also depends on which way the shell is orientated. With the hinge at the top, it is used by two families - Bolger and Scaife, but with the hinge of the shell at the bottom it is used by at least 30+ families.

[Does anyone know what the significance is?]
Contrary to what most people are led to believe, there is no quantified symbology attached to 99.9% of heraldic items that one sees in coats of arms. In most instances any symbology is in the eye/mind of the armiger and his herald alone and unless they wish to give some explanation for their choice of heraldic charges, etc., one can only speculate.
