From the Maitland Mercury, reports taken from the Melbourne newspapers:
22 Oct 1852 (page 2)departure from Scotland
12 Feb 1853 (page 2)dismasted
14 March 1853 (page 2) Arrival and cabin passenger list
14 March 1853 (page 2) mention of losing masts in Bay of Biscay

If this was a family story, it looks as though it may have been somewhat exaggerated. If you have access to "Log of Logs", a shipping log may have survived and would give further details.
