Daniel McGuire, England to Australia

I have a Daniel McGuire in my family who came to Australia from England in c1830. I have searched for a couple of years but have only found one possibility. There is a Daniel who came to Aust as a convict in 1829 aboard "America". I cannot find out what happened to that Daniel to know if they are the same person. My Daniel supposedly married Lucy Beckinsale but no one can find a marriage. I don't think they married at all. Daniel the convict was already married so that may explain no marriage record. Also cannot find Lucy in immigration. She is from Oxford. There is one possibility for her under Bickinsall but it says she came from Glasgow. Could SKS check these out and give me your opinion or you may find a different record. Anything would be a big help as it is a brick wall.
Janice

My great great grandfather emmigrated to Australia in 1886 and on the ship recorded it states he was an assisted immigrant and the rest seems to say "By order of Alf" but the handwriting isn't great. Does anyone have any idea what this might be?
I've searched all over and can't find out what this might be and I'd like to know why they went to Australia, especially given that they were back in the UK by 1899.

The act of emmigrating

I have an ancestor who emmigrated to Australia in 1865 with his wife and three little children under an assumed name. Oral family history tells of a disgrace of sorts. They left Gravesend in April 1865.

I'm interested in how people emmigrated.

I understand that passports were not necessary but you could apply for one from the Foreign Office(?) if you wished. Was any other documentation required?

Did you book your passage through some sort of agent months in advance? I presume that if this was the case you'd be notified a couple of weeks in advance of births being available.

Or was it possible to see an add in the paper indicating a ship's sailing to Australia and front up and pay your passage only days before sailing? I know for the return journey Australia-England that this was the case.

Greatful for any info. on the process.

Darryl, Sydney Australia

Help !

I am trying to find my GG Grandmother Ann Hoolaghan, who came to Australia from Tullamore, Kings County, Ireland; According to her son’s birth cert she was born about 1825. Im guessing she would have arrived here about the 1840’s. Going by her marriage cert she worked somewhere at "Old Banks” near Woodville in the Hunter Valley NSW. Her surname is spelt in a variety of ways.

I am unable to find any trace of her what so ever.

She married Benjamin Franklin on the 5 Aug 1856 at Roman Catholic Church, East Maitland, NSW. It is believed that he came to Australia as a single man on the Earl Grey in 1851 and worked at Phoenix Park Morpeth, and later they moved to Albion Farm then to the property called ‘Lennoxton’ near Vacy and died on the property in 1874. His grave is at the Summer Hill cemetery, near there. The children of this marriage are listed on the NSW BDM death register as being buried at Morpeth.

Any assistance with this - needle in the haystack - would be greatly appreciated.

Gordon...........
Can someone please tell me what process a family had to go through to come to Australia, in the 1850!s. I have family that came here, but I do not know what they had to do to be able to come. Would there still be paperwork on them? Where would I look? One family left from Liverpool. Thanks Kerry

Help!

I am at my wits end. I am trying to find out when and what ship my gggrandfather Charles Wilfred HAY arrived in Australia. Some information that I am 100% about. He was married to Martha Jane Williams on the 31st December 1884 at Moonta South Australia. He died on the 4th April 1946 in Adelaide. His death certificate states that he was born in Cardiff Wales and spent 62 years in the commonwealth and was married at the age of 24 dying at the age of 85. If he was 85 then his date of birth would have been 1861, If he was 24 at marriage he would have been born in 1860 and if we go by length in commonwealth he would have arrived in Australia in 1884.
Now the information that I am not 100% about, I believe he was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales on the 18 May 1856. On census reports from 1841 I have traced him until 1881, then he disappears from UK.
I have visited the National Capital Library in Canberra and gone through as many microfiche and film as i could. I guess there are still quite a few ships that have not been listed or records that have survived, he also may have landed at another port, then walked, bused, trained or shipped to where ever. He really is a mystery, to me in any case. Although it is a great challenge I think I have exhausted most of the resources at my disposal.
If there is anyone out there that can assist me or steer me in a better direction I would greatly appreciate it. Are there records that exist in UK for people migrating? Perhaps he changed his name once he got here!

Hi,
Does anyone have access to the Hamburg lists??

I am trying to find out any further information on the members of the following family, who emigrated from Germany to Australia in 1855 aboard the ship 'Caesar':

Dorothea Nuss - aged 36 died on voyage
George Nikolaus Nuss - aged 45
George Andrew - aged 14
Eva J - aged 7
John - aged 4
Dorothea Maria - aged 1

The name is spelt NUSS, NEUSS

If anyone has access to the Hamburg lists for 1855- I would be very grateful for any further info on this family. Unfortuantely their BMD's in Australia only list Germany as their place of origin, nothing any more specific.

Many thanks!!
Does anyone know where you can look up information on people leaving Australia and returning to England in the 1800's. I think my dates are between about 1850 and 1890. Both the passengers I'm looking for lived in NSW so probably left from Sydney. One was possibly considered gentry - Isabella Elliot wid of Gilbert Elliot, the other is William Yabsley, a prominent ship builder from Coraki who made a trip to England not long before his death.
ANy help would be appreciated.

James Boughen was born abt. 1835 in Narborough, England to Robert & Charlotte (Edwards) Boughen. Robert died shortly afterwards in 1837. Later, Charlotte married Robert's brother, John who is my ancestor. I have an unidentified picture taken by Andrew Smith Junr. Photographer, Adelong. I had no idea what country this was in till a fellow researcher gave me the info. that it was in Australia. He also found that a James Boughen, miner died in Adelong in 1876. A family story was told to me that pos. a brother went to work in the mines in Australia. This is too much of a coincidence not to be somewhat correct. According to the death reg. (which has incorrect father? but correct mother) transcription he had a brother-in-law P.A. Phillips (a Phillip A Phillips is given as the undertaker also). At this point anything from hereon is guesswork. Would be interested in anyone searching this family. Thanks.

I am looking for any information about Alexander Martin son of Edwin (second given name may have been Edward) Martin and Caroline (nee Taylor). Alexander was the youngest son born after 1873. He had a brother Edwin James Martin and sister Ellen (later married Thomas Traynor). These 3 children were born in Pancras London and lived at 5 Thanet Street. Mother Caroline died while children were young. His father may have remarried and had another child William H. Martin prior to his death in 1901.

Alexander and brother Edwin James Martin have been located in Brighton, England on the 1901 census. I believe that Alexander may have left England to immigrate to New Zealand/Australia. Edwin immigrated to Canada prior to 1914. Ellen died prior to 1914.

Would like to contact any relatives of Alexander.

I have found out that my great grandfather's elder brother Thomas Arthur Rumney married to Harriet Pritchard came out to Australia but I don't know when. They had three sons whilst in Australis, William born in 1861 and twins, George Thomas and Henry Charles born in 1863. The family at some point came back to England as the sons married and had children in Aldenham, Hertfordshire but on another person's tree they were born in Bushey, Hertfordshire. I have looked on some sites for their birth certificates but cannot find any record of them. The only thing I can find out to do with their birth is on Census returns that they were born in New South Wales.
Please can anybody help me. Many thanks.

Charles Knee/Nee - migration from China to Australia

I was wondering if anyone is able to do a lookup for Charles Knee/Nee who immigrated to Australia from Canton, China. Evidently he arrived in NSW, Australia in 1850. At the age of 40 in 1873 he applied for naturalisation. Any information that anyone can find would be greatly appreciated. I am completely stuck with my chinese ancestry.

Kind regards,
Shauna Knee

I am very interested in finding out information on my great-great grandma and her family who came to Australia from Germany on a boat in the 1860's. Her name was Caroline Wilhemina Bahr and she was born on that boat as they sailed to Australia. I would be very grateful for any information regarding her and her family. Thanks.

1880 reasons for migrating?

Hi

Just hoping someone can help me understand why someone would migrate around 1880. I believe this is after the time of deporting convicts? Does anyone know if you would pay your way then or received free passage to grow the colony??

Additionally, is there any way to track down which ships arrived around this time?
