I think it is likely that there would have been very slow and probably irregular communication by post.

I had a relative who was transported from Scotland in 1831 to Australia and who died in Sydney in 1837. Her son back in Scotland knew about her death somehow, because he makes reference to it in a document in the 1840s. So that makes me think letters must have been going back and forth at that time.
