Could anyone make a suggestion regarding how to go about determining how my 2Xgreat-grandfather got to the new world from France? The first record of him is an enlistment in the US Army in 1841 at Detroit. Family story is that he Anglicized his name to Louis Oliver Love. It could have been anything from L'Amour to Louviere. He would have been 19 or 20 years old at the time of enlistment.
