If you were a French Canadian residing in Lower Quebec...say St.Thomas...and you wanted to emmigrate to one of the burgeoning textile towns of southern New England...say Holyoke, Mass. I am trying to find the entry records of my great grand parents and I'm wondering if anyone one knows where to start looking...

French-Canadian Immigrants to Illinois

I need help on where/how to research early French-Canadian immigrants to Illinois. Our relatives emigrated between 1815 and 1839, where we have a marriage record for our ancestors in Greene County. They later settled in Calhoun county.

Our family surname is Wood, but I wonder if that was in fact anglicized. Census records show they were born in "Lower Canada" with a native tongue of French.

Luke WOOD b. 1815 married Emily Tart b. 1815 in 1839 in Greene County, IL.

Franco-Americans in the Civil War

I am pleased to announce the publication of a booklet dedicated both to the American immigrant experience and to the history of Canadian-American relations:

Bélanger, Damien-Claude. FRANCO-AMERICANS IN THE CIVIL WAR ERA (1861-1865). Montreal, Études sur l’histoire des relations canado-américaines/Studies in the History of Canadian-American Relations, 2001. ix-45 pages.

For the American scholar, no period of history is more fascinating, challenging and controversial than that of the Civil War. Nevertheless, few historians have studied the Franco-American participation in the war, which has remained shrouded in myths. This booklet examines this little known aspect of the conflict along with the growth of the Franco-American communities in the Northeast and Midwest during the Civil War era. Throughout the study, the Canadian dimension of the conflict is explored to provide the reader with an overall sense of its continental impact. (From the introduction)

FRANCO-AMERICANS IN THE CIVIL WAR ERA is the first booklet in an occasional and bilingual series called “Études sur l’histoire des relations canado-américaines/Studies in the History of Canadian-American Relations” that explores various aspects of the historical relationship between Canada and the United States. The series’ goal is to provide the reader with a more continental interpretation of Canadian and American history. (From the preface)

For more information, visit http://www.geocities.com/canamstudies .

Damien-Claude Bélanger (dbelan5@po-box.mcgill.ca)
Graduate fellow
McGill Institute for the Study of Canada

Looking for information on Casper Teiper who may have immigrated to Canada from Germany. He married a woman by the name of Agnes Nancy Fanchier. I know that Casper Teiper built bridges in Canada and that he was my great grandfather. I also know that he married Agnes Nancy in Detroit Michigan and that my grandfather John Edward Teiper was born in Hamilton, Ontario. I have recently learned that my great grandfather used to buy his steel from Andrew Carnegie but that my great grandfather went back to Germany and brought a steel mill back to Canada to make his own steel for the bridges. If anyone out there has any information please e-mail me at jrtc48@aol.com. Thank you.

Montreal Records/Senet family

I recently found my husband's family (Snay, an Anglicized version of Senet) to be descended from Nicholas Senet dit Laliberte who arrived in Montreal around 1670-1680. He was a corporal in the French Army who became a Royal Notary. From Denissen (a genealogy of French families in the Detroit area), I have found the names of his direct descendants down to my husband's great grandfather. The family lived in or near Montreal (Point-Aux Trembles, Longue Pointe, Chambly) until the late 1700's when they moved to Detroit, then to Mt. Clemens, MI where my husband was born. I would like to find out more about his ancestors besides the vital statistics. Does anyone know of resources available where you could find their occupations or any other information? We live in Kentucky, but would like to take a trip to Montreal to see his ancestors birthplace and do some research. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

FRENCH PORT MOST LIKELY USED BY CITIZENS OF BREST OR TROYES TO COME TO U.S. 1800-1820

Trying to identify port most likely used by persons leaving Brest or Troyes France to come to NY between 1800-1820. Have located g-g-g-Grandfather BAZILLE GUYOT in one of Filby's books, but it doesn't show a ship's name. Rather it shows him as an alien legally allowed to buy U.S. real estate in 1823, also that he was naturalized as U.S. citizen in 1826. Naturalization paper only shows he came from Troyes met the residency requirements for citizenship. Witness's name doesn't seem to be that of a relative.
Bazille's wife MARY FRANCE LA RUE (LE ROUX) left Brest ca 1810 for NY. Haven't a clue who brought her here if she was 10 yrs old at the time.
Any suggestions where to look next, please??

The french government gave them passage to Canada rather than look after their welfare in France. His father was also supposed to be Peter La Rose (Pierre?).
