Wilkinson's of Nova Scotia

I am looking for some information regarding my great-great grandfather Richard Wilkinson. He and his wife Ada Jane (Crittendon) came to the United States in about 1850 with Richards mother Temperence. The name of Richard's father is unknown to me. I know many came from the Guysborough county.
One they arrived (in Gloucester, MA), Richard and Ada had 10 children including, Joseph R, Effie M., Ada Viola, Clarence W., Edward A, Clarence Gaffney (my great grandfather), Ella J, and Charles H. They also had two stillborn children. I have been told that the mother's maiden name may have been Reeves but I am unsure... Both Richard R. Wilkinson and Ada J Crittendon were born in 1847.. Ada possibly in Halifax... Any information would be greatly appreciated...

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how I can find more information about my ancestor Rance Taylor who was born in 1871 Rochester, Kent, England, and last heard of emigrating to Canada between 1881 and 1891. Looks like he went to Canada with his family, some stayed and some returned to Kent by 1901.

Back in the early 1900's it seems lots of families sailed from England to Canada as a result of Canada 'offering' something...jobs, land, opportunity? My Father's family make such a treck about 1914, staying in Toronto till 1923. Does anyone know what the 'offer' might have been? My cousin seems to think there was advertising in England. Was there a period of time you were then obligated to stay? I can find nothing on this. For reference, my father was Norman Wrigley and was about 9 years old when they sailed there. He was born in Blackpool.

Irene CAMPBELL was an aunt I never met. She was born in 1939, in Lochgilphead, Argyll, Scotland to Marion MCGREGOR and Angus CAMPBELL. I have only recently learned that she immigrated to Canada at some point ... after 1959?? She took a young daughter with her. No mention of a husband. The child did not like Canada and was sent back to her CAMPBELL grandparents to be raised. Irene died in Canada, but I know no more. Can anyone add to this? I immigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1967. Thanks for any help!

Border Crossings from USA to Canada, and Back

I am looking for a source of records that would list any border crossings from the United States to Canada and back around the 1920’s. I have one family that was in Kansas in 1916 and they have a child that was born in 1919 in Canada and by 1930 they were back in the United States in Kansas City Missouri. The sister of the father and her family I am unable to locate in the 1920 census, they should have been in Iowa but they just vanished. I am suspecting they went to Canada so she could help the sister-in-law with the birthing of the child.

The father would be Ira Jones b.1885, mother Gertrude Jones b.1887. They had two children going to Canada and three coming back. The sister was Mary Riddle b.1890 and husband John Riddle b.1882 they had three children but one stayed with an aunt in Iowa.

Does anyone know where the various border crossings were during those years. I know one was around New York but that is it. During those times did you just “walk” across. If so where would I look for any information on the birth of the child for confirmation. Thanks for any help.

Pat Bowen
It may be that the family were orphaned. Albert (Bertie) enlisted in the Royal navy and married a Gladys Pearce in 1926.He and Gladys had two daughtersMuriel (Bunty) and Sylvia (Sally). My mother Bunty Mayhew corresponded with a cousin Freda who had a daughter Eileen. The letter I have was from Ontario. Any help would be great.

My Russian grandfather entered the US in 1905 by train from Montreal. His border crossing card says he entered the United States in 1903, but I cannot find him in any Ellis Island records. So I'd like to see if there are any records related to his entering Canada from the U.S. sometime between 1903 and 1905. Any advice on what specific records to seek and where to find them?

Thanks in advance,

R. Barre

Looking for ship list Great Grandfather might have been on

Hello:
I need help as I am new to this search. My great grandfather, William Morris and his wife, Sally, and two children, William Adam Morris and a baby girl, left their homestead in Titchmarsh, Northamptonshire, England in 1854 and the ship they were on arrived in Quebec about July 1854. I am unsure of what port they would have left from. The mother, Sally, and the baby girl died on the trip over from "ship fever" and were buried at sea. The father, William, died on July 7, 1854 after his arrival in Quebec City. The little boy, William Adam Morris, was adopted by a Mr. Henry Swift. If anyone can guide me about the ships or know of any of my family information I would appreciate your e-mailing me as soon as possible. My e-mail address is: kpunch@comcast.net. Thank you for any assistance you can give me.

I have trawled through the passenger list of every ship I can find that arrived in Canada, NS, NB, and PEI between 1750 and 1800 and I still can't find how my anscestor arrived there. The first evidence I have of Abner Smith Sr, is from the PollTax records 1792, in Rawdon, Hants Co. NS. I have even tried the lists arriving in the US at that time, but he is just not on there. Can anyone help me? How and when did he arrive in NS? According to James F Smith, Abner was NOT a Loyalist and did not come up with the grantees. Can anyone please advise me where I can look next?
Many thanks
Donna

New York Passenger Lists Look-Up Please

Hi Does anyone have access to New York Passenger Lists 1820-1957?
I'm trying to discover if CECIL GRUZELIER (b. 1874, Plymouth, Devon) and his brother STANLEY GRUZELIER (two years his junior) emigrated to Canada. Can anyone help?
Cecil may have travelled with his wife (either HARRIET or KATHLEEN, married 1906). It would appear Cecil died in WW1 serving in the 31st Bn., Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regiment) so I can only assume he travelled sometime between 1906-1914. Not much discovered about Stanley I'm afraid.
C Gruzelier and Stanley appear on this list (along with a number of other Gruzelier's about whom I am also interested) but unfortunately, my subscription doesn't allow access to the detail.
Any help / suggestions very gratefully received.
Simon

ten boys from Bristol to Canada via Liverpool 1885

Whilst researching my great great uncle, Daniel Brown, I have discovered the enclosed boys were British Home Children sent from Clifton Industrial School for Boys in Bristol to Canada in 1885. I had no idea Daniel was a British Home Child and I add the information here in case it is of use to someone else.

Boys’ names and age at arrival in Canada:-
George Thomas aged 16
Fred Chadwick aged 16
Joseph Jordon (or Jordan) aged 14
Samuel Monk aged 16
Robert Monk aged 14
The following boys travelled with the above and are also mentioned on the 1881 Bristol census for Clifton Industrial School for Boys	.
Daniel Brown age 15 - birthplace Bristol
Edwin Pick aged 16 - birthplace Derby
Thomas Holbrook aged 16 – birthplace Bristol
Henry Woodward aged 16 – birthplace Derby
Henry Mason aged 16 – birthplace Derby.

Travel details:-
Year of arrival: 1885
Ship:	SS Scandinavian (another website says SS Sardinian so perhaps it was difficult to transcribe)
Port of departure: Liverpool
Departure date: 9TH April 1885
Port of arrival; Halifax
Arrival date: 19th April 1885 (other website says 18th April)
Party:	Industrial school of Bristol
Destination: New Brunswick & Nova Scotia
Comments: a few scattered entries plus ten young men from Bristol
microfilm reel: C-4512
Reference: RG76 C 1b

Another web site mentions the following and I wondered if they were the same 10 boys:
Ship arrivals port of Quebec, sponsored emigrants:-
Year – 1885
Date – April 10th
Ship - ?
Organisation - Industrial School of Bristol - placed around Annapolis - 5 left and "are wandering about the country"
Male - 10

Melita Passenger record March 1920?

I have 2 different listings for family members Theodore Benn and his brother-in-law John E. Martin coming on the Melita in March 1920. On the Canada National Archives page, there is no list for the ship Melita in 1920 before May 1920.
I did check the May and June lists for 1920 to be sure but no success.
Since Theodore Benn's family is listed on July 1920 passenger lists as coming to see him, I am assuming he was
in Canada then.
Any suggestions on where I might find this list? Is it possible that the list is lost/destroyed?

Can anybody else find these details?.

Finally, James Joseph D married in Canada in 1920, but I can't find any record of him arriving in Canda prior to this.
Thanks to help from other researchers, I was able to find Rosie (Freindlich) Samlan, my great-grandmother, who died in 1915 and is buried in Montreal. Best guess is that she would have emigrated somewhere between 1890-1914.

However, we have no information about her life, or her husband. The name doesn't seem to be on any of the census information, and I haven't had any luck with ships lists thus far (family lore is that there's a Romanian connection).

Any thoughts on how to proceed?
Hallo, my Grandfathers sister Amy Merrick, went to Canada in the 1930's/40's, (I think?) it may have been earlier or later, she was married or married on arrival, I do not know her married name.
My Grandfather was Robert Guy Merrick, he was a ventriloquist and played the banjo, he was also a Piriot on the stage (They wore clowns costumes all in one in white and a black pointed hat with a pom-pom on it and played instruments). He married Emily Clark, (My Grandmother). Grandad had three brithers, William, Jesse and Richard, and one sister, Amy. So, if anyone is out there in Canada, who is a relative of Amy, please get in touch, his sister would have been my Gt, Gt Aunt and we could be cousins!
All of his children are now dead, there is just my sister Wendy and I and our cousin Anne left,we need you, because were getting thin on the ground, apart from the new generation that is.
JEAN ROWENA PAGE - BORN 30 NOV 1933 IN THE UK

Jean R Page is my god-mother but she emigrated to Canada in 1954 or thereabouts when I was just 2 years old and all contact with her and her family was lost.

Jean was just 21 years old and single when she left the U.K for her new life in Canada. She may have married but I have no way of knowing.

Travelling with Jean were her parents - her father Stanley George Page, born c1907 in the U.K and her mother, Ivy Page (nee Darton) born 1911 in the U.K.

I suspect given the dates of birth of Jeans parents, both are very likely deceased now but if I could find a death record for them and possibly obtain a certificate, it would allow me to find out if it was their daughter Jean who registered the death.

If anyone can offer any help in finding Jean, I would so appreciate it. It means a lot to me to find her.

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to assist me with my search.

Jennifer

Desperate for Help

Up until now I've been quite successful in my new hobby of researching my Family Tree. However, I've hit upon a problem. I have discovered that my god-mother (Jean Rowena Page, born November 1933, England)and her parents Stanley George Page (born 1907, England)/Ivy Page (nee Darton) (born 1911 England)emigrated to Canada in 1954/early 1955. I never knew Jean as she emigrated when I was just a baby and all contact with the family was lost. I have no idea whether they sailed or travelled by other means to Canada and if they did from which UK port to where in Canada. Jean may have married so I am hampered by the fact that I do not know how to begin looking for a marriage record in Canada. Passenger lists do not appear to cover the period I'm looking for. Can anyone with some experience please tell me how I might find out what happened to Jean and her family. I'm not sure but Jean may have also had a young child - rumour has it that she had a baby in 1954 but this is an unconfirmed report. I would like to get details of any record pertaining to the PAGE family and would appreciate the help of all you experts out there

I need help.

The novice researcher that I am I need some help. I am trying to reseach a man Thomas Breese who came to Ontario between his marriage in Stepny, middlesex, England in the last quarter of 1868, and the census in Canada in 1871. Then he and his wife Mary Kermath died she in May 1880, and he on the steamer Victoria May 1881. They had four children, a boy I think was named Morris or Maurice. Daughters Jessie or Janet, Lillie and Eva. I need to find his roots. I have no idea where to look to find his parentage. I have the index for the marriage in Stepney. Can I get a copy of the original record? would it list his parents? Where he was born? This I think is the only way to find where he came from. Any advice or places to look? thank you.

Passenger Lists to Canada - Quebec Ports

Searchable by surname!

Take a look for your ancestors -

" ... Currently available
online for 1908 to 1910, and something that will be
expanded back to 1900 as the project proceeds.

Anyone who has had to search these microfilms by hand
will appreciate how significant this project will be
(until Library and Archives Canada releases its
long-promised index to all passenger lists)".

http://members.shaw.ca/nanaimo.fhs/#mozTocId46239

Regards,

Kathleen

i am trying to find some sort of record to show that my great grandfather Ernest Bassett immigrated to canada. The timeframe in which he came here is between 1906 - 1929. I dont know his parents names. all i know is that he was supposedly born in Yorkshire England and that my grandfather was born in Toronto ontario, in 1930. I have looked in databases and such on the internet with no luck, and cannot find him in the yorkshire BMD index, i am fairly sure he was born in england though. he also had a sister, Minnie Bassett who was born in 1908 im not sure where she was born though.

im also looking for Ernest's parents names, but this may be easier to find out after i find out where he came from, i also cannot find him in the canada 1911 index so i dont think he was here then.

I'm trying to find the ancestors of Samuel Rodda, who was born in Crowan, Cornwall, in 1806. He married Christian, and their children were Christian (b.1836), Samuel (b.1836), Miriam Rodda (b.1839), Jane (b.1841), Elizabeth (b.1844), Emma (b.1846), and Matthew (b.1847). Emma later married John Bennetts (b.1843). They had many children, including my great grandmother Annie Bennetts (b.1880, Barrow). She married John Henry Harrison (b.1881 Ulverston), and had my grandmother Violet Harrison (b.1902, Barrow), who went on to marry Norman Bispham (b.1902). Annie Bennetts later married Thomas Rowley, and they had a daughter, Ivy Rowley (b.1911, Barrow). Any information would be helpful.
Thanks
Debbie

I am trying to locate descendents of Joseph and Margaret Planta. Joseph was born in Wales in approximately 1839 and Margaret was born in Australia in approximately 1846. In the 1881 Canadian census, they are listed as having 5 children – Amelia (b. circa 1864), Evan (b. circa 1866), Albert (b. circa 1868), Walter (b. circa 1870) and Lilla (b circa 1880). The census indicates that all the children (except Lilla) were born in Australia, but gives their ethnic origin as Welsh (probably because their father was Welsh). Lilla was born in British Columbia, which is where the family was living at the time.

I am trying to determine if Margaret’s maiden name was Seymour. If it was, I believe I have traced a related family. Family legend speaks of Margaret Seymour marrying and eventually moving to Canada.
Samlan immigration

My grandfather, who died at a young age, was Abe Samlan. He appears to have born in Montreal in 1895 (?).

On his marriage license, his father is listed Moses, about whom nothing is known, although he supposedly came from Romania.

His mother, Rosie (Freindlich) Samlan, died in Montreal in 1915, at age 40. Rosie’s father’s name was Yosef, according to her gravestone in Montreal's Back River cemetary (Hungarian Benevolent section).

How can I find immigration information (or other information) about Rosie Samlan?
