KERR and HENDERSON family-group, Ireland to Canada 1823-1825

Hello,

I just discovered that this Message Board exists. I checked the archives and I don't see any messages about my ancestors from past years. I'll just post a brief summary of them; there is a lot of information in the archives of the Lists and Boards at www.rootsweb.com

Between 1823-1825 a family-group of KERR's and HENDERSON's left County Sligo, Ireland and migrated to Canada. They were told to settle in Argenteuil County, Province of Quebec, which is northwest of the St. Lawrence River. There were 9 people, 4 couples and a single lady (who married in Canada). They initially settled in "the Former Township of Gore" which is where Lakefield, Lachute, and Mill Isles are now. (There is a Mailing List for the "Former Township of Gore" at www.rootsweb.com )

The 5 couples had many children and thus have many descendants. And, there is at least one data base about them. My ancestors, Robert KERR and Elizabeth HENDERSON, were born there in 1827, then married there. They had 5 children mostly during 1850's, and I think it was the 1860's when they moved down to Compton County. Between 1873 and 1885, most of the family migrated down to Boston, MA. Their oldest, William KERR, came down first, married near Boston, and had 6 children. His sister followed and also married here, then the parents and their 2 younger sons came down. William KERR would become my great-grandfather.

I have 3 sets of ancestors who either went to Canada, first, or who went back and forth between Canada and Maine. Because of this, I started up a List and Boards for CAN-USA-Migration at www.rootsweb.com

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

(on Lists and Boards at www.rootsweb.com for 12+ yrs.; now an Admin for 10 Lists and 5 Boards)

FYI:

http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/CAN/CAN-QC-GOR...

I am sure it was the lumber business that drew them to Michigan and Wisconsin where there were huge forests that could provide lumber for the construction that was needed as the country moved westward. Most of my relatives were in the lumber business in Wisconsin. I do not have documentation (even went to Ireland without success), but by process of elimination I think they were from either County Derry or County Antrim. I suspect they may have been from Belfast, which is Antrim. I haven't been able to pinpoint the port where they boarded the ship for Canada either, but I do know they came into Canada at Quebec. I think that is where Maria Scott met Alexander McCluskey, my gg grandfather

I have a record of a Thomas BOLGER, aged 20 in 1860, son of a gentleman, of Coolnamuck, Kilkenny, leaving school in June 1862 for "P. L. S. British America".

Can anyone tell me where "P. L. S. British America" is, please?

[I can't find a suitable Thomas BOLGER in the 1871 Canada census. The handwriting is good and I think "P. L. S. cannot be "P. E. I.".]

David Lynch
Thanks for your quick response. Here's what I know. According to familysearch.com, Betsy and John Scott were the parents of Maria Scott, my great great grandmother. I guess that makes Betsy my ggg grandmother. The source for this is the Wisconsin Deaths and Burials records 1835-1968 for Maria Scott. I don't know any names of Maria's siblings. Maria and her husband Alexander had 8 children. They lived in Grandby, Quebec, a town about 98 miles Lachute until circa 1842-1844. By 1845 they were in Stratford, Ontario. Not sure why they moved, possibly for the same reasons that your Scotts moved there. My Scotts were Presbyterians from Northern Ireland. If yours were from County Mayo they most likely were Catholics. I appreciate you checking the LDS church where you are. Need all possible help.

I am searching for Maria Scott who arrived in Quebec from Ireland around the year 1829. She may have married Alexander McCluskey, also from Ireland, after she got to Canada. There were a LOT of McCluskey/McCloskeys in Argenteuill and so they may have met there. Do you have any more information on the Scotts that may help me lead to a match between these two families? You said there were two Scott families in the Argenteuill/LaChute area. Any details on this family. Any information greatly appreciated.

Searching for William Johnson and Evangeline/Angeline Allen

Hello! Hoping to find some assistance with William Johnson (b. 1856 - d. 1931 and Evangeline/Angeline Allen (b. 1862 - d. 1896). They are my 2x great grandparents, but I'm having difficulty finding information about William's family entirely, and about Evangeline's family before they came to New Brunswick. Both families are from Ireland.

I received some wonderful help regarding Evangeline's family through this board a while back, so here is some information on her, for reference:

-- Her parents where John Palmer Allen and Mary Ann Carrigan (who later married John Carr). John's parents where John Allen and Ellen Sawyer. I see there are a few Allens in the area, but not sure how they are all related.

Here's what I have on William and would appreciate any help finding really anything on him other than what's listed below (and willing to share whatever I have, too):

-- William Johnson b. 14 Jun 1856 in New Brunswick, d. 28 Jul 1931 in Aitkin, Minnesota. Parents unknown but were of Irish descent.
-- In the 1881 Census, William was living with a Blair family, listed immediately before the Allens on the census form. He was a lumberman.
-- He married Angeline/Evangeline Allen in Oct 1881, and they were listed as being from Lincoln, Sunbury New Brunswick. Their witnesses were Evangeline's sister, Ida/Adah, and her (apparent) stepbrother Bedford Carr.
-- By 1885-1890 William and Evangeline were living in Minnesota, but may have also been in Maine for a time.
-- While in Minnesota, they had three children, and Evangeline (aka Lena) died in 1896 shortly after the birth of their third son.
-- After she died William married a woman named Nellie Brown, while living in Morrison County, Minnesota, but they did not remain married for very long.

Thanks in advance for any information you can share!

What was the name of your grandparents? As the 1850s was in the height of the Irish famine, they may be impossible to find, but you have to start somewhere. If you send on any informaton you can on name, etc. it would help a lot.
V McG

I'm researching the name Stinson/Stenson/Stinston.

Thomas Frances? Stinson, b. 1833-1836 Ireland
and
William A. Stinson, youngest son of Thomas (above) and Mary McLelland/McClelland (1836-1882), b. abt 1869, shown on 1871 census (Cavan Twp, Durham, Ontario) and 1881 census (Manvers Twp, Durham, Ontario). He is possibly a lodger in Markdale in 1891 census but have not found any other record in Cdn. census or a death record anywhere.

As indicated in earlier postings, I have Thomas being married in Cavan Twp in 1855, no parents are shown on marriage record. Then the censuses from 1861-1891, then nothing. Again not showing up again, either in Canadian census (checked 1901 & 1911) or Ontario death records.

Family rumour has it that Thomas might have gone to Niagara Falls area and got involved in a hotel, but haven't found anything in that area either.

Any suggestions on a next step?

Thanks, yes, the last I have been able to find for Thomas is the 1891 census when he was living with son John & family in Woodford. He wasn't with them in the 1901 census, nor is there a death record for him in Ontario up 1912. Last summer I went to Ontario archives and checked every Stinson death, I was also looking for any information on son William, which has also eluded me.

I believe you will find Thomas in the 1871 census, and with Mary in the 1881 census, and Thomas as widower in the 1891 census living with son John and his family.

Familysearch.org has death of son Samuel in 1913 with parents shown as Thomas and Mary as well as birth of daughter Mary Ann in 1871.

They were married in Cavan Township, Durham County, Ontario, though it was known as Upper Canada back then. And I did get the transcript of the marriage license from the Anglican Church of Canada but it only states that it was a "special license" and there are no parents names or occupations listed, just the bride (Mary McLellan) and groom (Thomas Stenson) and their ages, the 2 witnesses, the minister and fact that it was Church of England! How frustrating, just one of the reasons that I'm stymied in this search--also can't find any death record of him!
Hi Linda,re your ancestor if he was married in Ontario in 1855 you should be able to get a copy of a marriage licence, if they started their civil records that early. You said "Cavan, Ontario" do you mean Cavan in Ontario or Co Cavan Ireland? If it was Cavan Ireland, you might find it on the mormon site under marriages, as the C Of I records were state records and were copied by the mormons at some stage, and sometimes you can be lucky and find a birth or marriage there. As the British custom was followed usually in most of the Commonwealth countries, compulsory civil registration usually started around 1864 (in Ireland anyway) but the C of I records here go from 1845. You might be lucky if it is Canada. The marriage certs are very useful as they usually give the name of the bride and groom's fathers (not mothers) occupations, plus a general town or townland address. There are sometimes more C Of I records surviving in general as it was the imposed first Church. I will check myself when I'm in the Nat Library, which may not be for a few weeks, but I will follow up if I find anything relevant, Good Luck, V McG

Thanks for the information. I have just registered with the site and am awaiting my password. I don't have much information about my ancestor, Thomas Stinson (Stenson/Stinston/Stevenson)possible middle name of Frances, just that he was Church of England and born abt 1836 in Ireland. He settled in Cavan, Ontario (married there in 1855) so I'll probably start with that county in Ireland. I don't know the name of his parents. I will put up some messages on the general site as soon as I can. LS

Ireland to Quebec (Framption area) prior to 1832 or 1837

I am looking for immigration information, name of ship too, for a James O'Connor who I think came from Co Wexford to Framption. By 1831 or so he had married Mary Kell, who came from England.
I know they married in an Angelican Church, but all children were baptized Roman Catholic, and by 1860 the entire family were in California (Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Jose area)

Here its John O'Connor immigration information I am most interest in. He may have dropped the O in Canada, but resumed using it in California.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank You
Barbara

Hi Dan!

One of my Duggan ancestors left Mallow, Co. Cork (next to Wexford) in the late 1800's. Don't know where he sailed from or with who. They surely would have disembarked at Quebec but my Duggan, then or later, went on to Ontario.

One of his descendants was living in Quebec city by 1880.
If any of this is possible, I can provide names and dates.

John.

Kirkpatricks in Ontario

I'm looking for information about the parents of Fanny Kirkpatrick (probably born around 1852-1853). She married George Jones, and on the Canadian marriage record, her parents are listed as Henry Kirkpatrick (born around 1811-1819?) and Almera. I've found various "Henry Kirkpatrick"s, one of which supposedly came from Bellenthralt/Bellenthrott, Ireland; however, I think that's probably an Anglicization of something Gaelic. I'd really like to know where in Ireland Henry Kirkpatrick's family lived, as well as his parents. Please help!

My g-g-g-grandparents immigrated to Northumberland and married at St. Patrick RC Church c. 1830-32. Their names were Thomas Sheehan (Sheahan) and Anna Breen having been born in Limerick, Ire. The Ancestry marriage record has bastardized the Sheehan name. Any information re this family, date of arrival, on what ship and occupation would be much appreciated. I have record of Anna arriving 1825 and Thomas c.1825-1830.

FYI - In 1840's, family took up residence in Old Chelsea, Quebec. Have much info re family's life in Chelsea.

Thank you so very, very much Bill! gail mare
