Hi Sonja, unfortunately, the only records I have found of ships leaving and entering the Marsdiep have been reports in the old newspapers, but they only give the Captain's name and no passengers. They do sometimes give the ports they have arrived from, as well as the destination ports. The only comprehensive ship manifests I have ever seen describing passengers and cargo on ships from Amsterdam have been the Customs Report records of Philadelphia and Baltimore. I've not located such records in The Netherlands. There are a lot of whaling expedition records at the Marine Museum Library in Amsterdam, but they would not be of use to you. One would think that even in the 1700s there would be records of emigrants leaving Amsterdam for foreign ports, but I have yet to find any. The VOC has records on line of ships and passengers bound for Batavia (Indonesia). Again, they would be of little interest to you. Have you performed a search for Hendrick van Essenhoogh in the Dutch genealogical records? I assume you have exhausted any records of English ports listing immigrants? As for Hendrick's surname, my guess is the his ancestors may have been from the village of Essenhoek near Essen and the Dutch-Belgian border. When his ancestor moved to a different town they called him "van Essenhoogh" to differentiate him from others of his new abode who had the same first name. This was a very common practice and gave rise to many of the "van" names in Holland. The "hoogh" part of it may have been an old spelling for Hoek, which means corner, or it was just a phonetic equivalent. Your Hendrick could well have come to England from Antwerpen, or say Rotterdam rather than Amsterdam. I would also search records for Hendrick van Essenhoek as well. Good luck in your searches. Don
