Some of the Medical Journals have comments by the surgeon's about the conditions on board the Ships. I have to share this one, It concerns the Convict Ship Margaret which My 14 yr. 3rd Great Convict Grandmother sailed from Ireland on 1837. it gives a great example of what's out there

" When the ship reached the latitude of 7 degree south the fever of a bilious remitant character made it appearance and was prevalent among the convicts and sailors of the ship. The surgeon also mentioned that most of the convicts if permitted passed the whole of the day being in bed and collected all kinds of rubbish about them, another filthy habit of the convicts to which they are addicted and more difficult to stop is washing their linen in putrid urine which they would hang up to dry in the prison., The Margaret arrived at Port Jackson on 30 May 1837.( too funny now I know how bleach was invented )
