Janos is a Hungarian name. It is not Slovak, which would be Jan. HOWEVER because of the use of the Hungarian language in Slovak regions that name was carried by many ethnic Slovaks, but they would have been called Jan by their family. Also I have never seen Janos used by Poles.
Susanna said "I know from experience that NO names or ALMOST no names were listed/spelled right in any of the census or ship manifests, ever"
Surely you jest :) Of the thousands of immigrants on ship manifests I have viewed I have found the majority to be spelled correctly! Now census records are another thing, as the info was typically given orally. While on the other hand immigrants carried passports or other travel papers, which were often used in compiling ship manifests at the Port of Departure and while at sea. But then I have looked up very few Scandanavians BUT I can say for certain that what I have said applies to those from Central and East Europe.
Having had history as my major I am well aware of the history of Europe. This Janos was not likely a citizen of Russia it would appear to be a simple mistake on the manifest.
