First the term ETHNICITY does not appear on ANY Ellis Island Ship manifest. And in 1893 Race did not appear. The ONLY column on those manifests was for Nationality, which meant "the country of which the immigrant is a citizen or subject of"... nothing to do with ethnicity... and certainly a different definition that that which we assign to Nationality today.
And one thing for certain with a given name of Janos he was not Russian, by citizenship nor by ethnicity.
If we look at the manifest for Janos OVOT or OVAT we can see that the column for Nationality had a ditto marks in it, the person above him appeared to be Rus??? but others for quite a few lines above were listed as Hungary... which is obviously what was intended for this Janos... which is a Hungarian (ethnic Magyar) name.
His detination city is listed as Altona.
