What an research angel you are. Thanks for the great help.

Here is what I do know. Gladys Edna Taylor and Hartridge Ashton McClendon were married abt 1911, probably in Jacksonville (Found Ashton in 1900 Jacksonville census with his father and his father in the 1910, 1920 & 1930 JVille census) and their only child, Mary Edith McLendon (note difference in spelling, not sure why that happened) was born 1913 in Jville, FL. Gladys was born and raised in Reddick (outside Gainesville) FL and her family lived in Gainesville. Gladys told me that Ashton had gotten on a train to go back to his work and disappeared or died. She never heard from him again and he did not go back to work in Miami. I am going to check the Jacksonville City directories for the period between 1916-1923 and see if he is listed there. Again, thanks for the great help and the jumpstart on the research on Ashton.
