Hi,

I also have Finnish relatives going back about the same. I was able to go on this free site http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~finwgw/parish.html

from there I was able to find my ancestry in Finland then able to use this site to go forward to find relative with the same common link. I know you said you don’t want to know about the past but it helped me to find the family I have in Finland.

To do this for example. My Gr Gr Grandfather who was Finnish has siblings who stayed in Finland. his siblings are listed on this site and by looking down the family tree at one of my gr gr grandfather siblings I was able to find who posted this person and contracted them and by asking in what relation are they to this person. Doing this I found out this person was a distant relative and was also able to find information out of any other relatives in Finland.

I needed to go back to the past go forward if that makes sence?

Hope this helps

Lou

Hi,
I'm only on this site for one reason. I really don't care who my ancestors were. I just want to use that information to find currently living relatives in the EU.
(my ancestors came to the US from Finland, Sweden, and UK four generations ago)

Is that possible with this site? If so, how do you do it?
My trial subscription ends in 6 days and I don't want to pay for this site if it can't be useful for that purpose.

Thanks

I have done all of those things. I've tried all kinds of crazy spellings and even found some by accident. The records I did find didn't have complete information on parents of the family members I was looking for. I can't read the Finnish language, so going to one of their genealogy sites is useless. Very expensive to hire someone--$100 and hour!!
Thanks anyway!

Have you looked at the censuses and located them on all of the censuses? Deaths are sometimes on Find A Grave and try Familysearch.org Sometimes you get additional facts from obituaries found or death certificates or obituaries. I do a lot of MN and death certificates ask where the parents were born; sometimes it is not filled in. Try lots of name spellings, there are transcription errors and some enumerators didn't understand speech accurately. Do you have naturalization certificates? Grace in AK

Frank Nelson & Maria Nikula were actually my great grandparents. Their son I think, was Alfred Nelson who married Sylvia Piiispanen, and they had one child, my dad in 1909 in Quincy.
Frank and Alfred may be brothers, I'm just not sure.
There is also Hjalmar Nelson and his wife Selma ?
and they are connected to Frank and Alfred as well, and living in W Quincy at least in the early 1940's.

Bbn

My grandmother was Sylvia Maria Piispanen, born in Kivijarvi Finland to Lauri Piispanen and Karoline Kinnunen.
She was 2nd youngest of about 6 children I think.
I know that all but the oldest came to Boston MA and settled in MA.
Sylvia came here in 1900, with her sister Impi, and older brother Vilheim(Wiliam in US) in 1900. Father was already in MA(Quincy I think) as were most of her sibblings.
I'd like name of ship date, port of dept, as well as date, and port of entry.
My grandfather was Frank Nelson. His middle name may have been(haven't confirmed this) Nikkarossi(check spelling)
His wifes name was Maria Nikula. I know Frank was also born in Kivivarvi(at least I think so). In 1912 Franks niece Tynne Nikkarossi, came to live with Frank, Maria, in W Quincy. She supposedly was an 8 or 9 year old orpahn.
I'd like information on Frank and Maria's immigration. as well.
Thank you
bbn

Hi there! I too was having a difficult time researching as well. I recently met long lost family who helped me a bit. Our family were farmers so they adopted the name of the farms they were working on at the time. If they moved from farm to farm then their names changed as well. Very confusing! I guess the fins didn't have last names until this century according to my cousin. I have a website that she referred me to so I hope it will help the both of you as well. It is www.pp.htv.fi/lkivinie/romanov/sukupuu.htm I have actually been able to find some history so hope you do too. Good luck! Serena

So, you have the same problem I do. It's sad we weren't more inquisitive in our younger years....

I will check out the website. I would love to hire a researcher. My biggest concern is that if they charge by the hour (which they do) our difficult family history situations will take many, many, many hours to track down. There's always the possibility that a researcher won't find any family history. I guess I will have to make the decision to spend a lot of money on a gamble or just leave things as they are.

Thanks for your input!

My family members are the Terpennen/Raatika, I don't know where in Finland they came from other than arriving in the US in 1896 and changing the name to Turpen. Anyway...

I did have someone contact me saying that there is a gentlemen doing research in Finland for a price. Unfortunately I have not contacted him yet to see prices or anything. His website is: www.famangle.com if you want to look into him. Good luck and if you find any other hints I would love to share info if possible.

I am trying to find family members from the Vaasa or Tjarlax area of Finland by the last name of Sodergren. They changed their last name to Hermans when they reached the US, around the mid-1800's, settling mostly in the Washington State area. I have also been told that their last name had originally been Hermans before it was Sodergren.

Any ideas how to get records from Finland?

I can't help you, sorry.
I am however curious about something,
What do you know about Michael's family either in Finland or Sweeden.?
I'm asking because I have a mystery that has been driving me nuts for many years now.
Susan Larson and her son John
Apparently Susan immigrated to Quincy MA with her husband in 1893(either Louis or Lauri Piispanen) and John came later around 1900 I think.
Lauri Piispanen was my great grandfather. his wife was Karoline kinnunen and my grandmother Sylvia Piispanen was one of their children all born in Kivijarvi Finland.
Karoline died in 1896 I believe. So to had to the confusion Susan and Louis/Lauri's immigration papers say they had been married 12 years.
If we are talking about the same Lauri Piispanen I'd like to know how he and Susan could be married 12 years in 1893, if his 2nd wife(Eva Kinnunen was his first)Karoline Kinnuen didn't die until 1896 in Finland.
So I'm trying to figure out if there was more than 1 Lauri Piispanen that immigrated to Quincy in 1893,
(2)who Susan Larson's first husband was, (John's father at any rate).
Either some dates are wrong or their was a divorce/ etc.

Any help at all to solve this mystery would be appreciated.
and I'm sorry to be so confusing as I'm sure it is.

Thank you
Barbar

Lauri,
Oliver was my dad. Back in those days legal adoption wasn't done much, I guess. We, our family wwent by the name Ilminen up to the time Moses's brother Charly (Kalle) was killed, and dad filed papers at the Courthouse, did we learn our last name was Koski. Dad had it legally changed to Ilminen.grampa Moses was the best grandpa to us kids. I remember the day he died. I wanted to be close to him and hid under his bed to be by him. I must have been five or so. So, is Alan Christiano your second cousin? I have all the info you referred to. Where do you live? If you have time, email me at lsullivan@gvtel.com. I live in Northern Minnesota, 300 miles from Ironwood.
Best regards,
Lillian Sullivan

L. Sullivan, Hi I am Lauri, related to Moses Ilminen, he is my Gr-Gr Uncle. Apparently you are a relative to William Oliver Ilminen? The story goes, that my Uncle Moses married Jenni who already had a son, but I think he (the son) took the name of Ilminen? I recently came across a pic of their wedding, if you would like I can email : ) They were married on 10 Feb 1912, and you can order a copy of the marriage certificate from: Gogebic County Clerk/ Register, 200 N. Moore St., Bessemer, MI 49911. I believe it's a $10.00 fee still.

After looking up what information I have here, I do not think that Villi Koski could be the same man. He came to America after my grandmother was pregnant. Also, She came to the UP in 1909. Father born Dec. 1909. I would have to sign up for Ancestry again to see the Ilmonen-Koski tree. I'm sure that Maria Pellikka(Finn spelling) is my grandma. She married Moses Ilminen(American spelling)in Bessemer 1912 or so. I wish I could contact that person, but have to pay it forward. If you know LaurGrifSaav, that would be a help. LOL
L.
I have not seen that family tree, (Ilmonen-Koski). My grandmother was Jenny Maria Pellikka, born in 1887 in Pippola Finland. When I was in Finland in 1995, we went thru Oulu to get to Pippola. Many Pellikka men are buried there, (WWII). She and her sister Anna lived in Oulu before they came to America. I have had a lot of family (other side) events in the last three weeks, I can't find my record of Villi's birth. I don't know if he married in the UP. I only know he fathered my father and left my grandmother without marriage.I need to go east (UP) for a funeral, when I return, I will look up that family tree. Thank you so much.
Lsullivan

You can find passport application and Passenger data on the the Institute for Migration- Finland web page. You can pay a small fee to get an expanded search- 15 euros now. There is also a free search option too.

I searched Koski and Kurikka and the only Ville I found was a Ville with a wife Aina, leaving Finland 4.1909 going to Duluth MN.

I did find 2 other Koski names in Kurikka. It's possible they are relatives.

Salomon Viktor born 1881. Passport application 1901.
Jaakko born 1880. Passport application 1914.

Searching passenger data on this web page,I find a Wiljam Koski, age 11, going to Hancock in 1913. There are also the first names Vilho, Wilhelm, William and Viljo Koski. Many of these are coming with family or a spouse. I don't see a match for you.

Miller,
I think not, since the one I am looking for must have been in the Besemer area without wife, since he applied for a marriage license, then left to return to Finland.
It may be remotely possible. A marriage license was applied for in Bessemer, MI (Upper Peninsula)in Nov or Dec. 1909. but one would suppose that not likely, as the other person was my grandmother Jenny Maria Pellikka.I need to go to Milwaukee for relative's wedding. When I return, I will see if I can find any further information. Did the manifest state where his friend Ollie Karvinen was? Thanks again for your help. Are you looking for someone in the UP? My Villi was from Kurrikka, Finland, southwest area of Finland. L. Sullivan
